Goals

On tracking

I think I’d like to keep track of how much I’m reading to an extend, but without too much detail. Just out of curiosity because I seem to have no good sense of how regularily I’m actually reading. I’ve tried tracking time or pages before but that apparently just stresses me out and makes something feel like a chore that isn’t one at all, so I’d rather not do that again (even though I sort of envy people who do that and then have cool stats at the end!)
During the first or second challenge someone here used a system where they just tracked if they read “a little” or “a lot” or something like that, roughly estimated without a timer - I really like that concept! I can’t for the life of me remember who that was, whoever you are, I hope it’s ok that I’m stealing your idea

What I'll be reading

In short, I’d like to read one page a day of anything. If I don’t have to look up a word or anything because I can’t figure out context then I’ll read another page (and another, and another, until I have to look something up, but maybe I’ll stop at 50 pages haha).

レンタルおにいちゃん - My first focus will be continuing with this as I think I dropped off somewhere in vol.2, so I’ll start that again from the beginning. If I manage to get through vol.2, I’ll either start vol.3 or switch back to よつばと！. These should be easy enough that I’ll either start wanting to move on to something more difficult again, or manage to make significant progress through each series in 2022.

Animal Crossing - I stopped playing this in Japanese for a while, so I’m going to switch back. I’ll be logging in to check turnip prices twice a day so if I don’t plan on playing any more than that on a specific day, making sure I fit in one conversation with an islander per day along with a turnip price check is a good start to building confidence back there.

Pokemon Cafe ReMix - Already playing this in Japanese, maybe I should actually log in every day to play a level rather than once a week for an easy bit of immersion?

I’ve started reading Barks articles just on the side because I’m enjoying learning new ways to talk about music, but I don’t really want to set any targets here.

1/1/22: Completed my NYE countdown on Animal Crossing in Japanese, spent half an hour talking to my islanders and read a whole chapter of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2.
2/1/22: About 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, making sense of the Tetris 99 daily challenges, and 37 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2.
3/1/22: About 30 minutes of Animal Crossing, and finished chapters 2 and 3 of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2.
4/1/22: About 15 minutes of Animal Crossing, and all of chapter 4 of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2. (And it got sad )
5/1/22: About 15 minutes of Animal Crossing, couple of levels of Pokemon Cafe ReMix and chapter 5 of レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.2. This rounds out Vol.2 entirely for me and wow was this volume an emotional rollercoaster.
6/1/22: Not too much reading done today as it was my birthday and I had a busy day, but I did start レンタルおにいちゃん Vol.3 and get 27 pages in!
7/1/22: Finished off chapters 11 and 12 of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3) today, for a total of 48 pages reading.
8/1/22: Read 10 pages of chapter 13 of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3).
9/1/22: Read a very short BARKS article about Daichi Miura’s rescheduled 2019 tour just so I’ve read something today.
10/1/22: Read 20 pages of レンタルおにいちゃん (Vol.3) to finish up chapter 13.

Background

Well, the fall challenge didn’t go super well for me (I think I checked off like six boxes total? whoops ) so here goes take two! I feel like I’m at a point where my biggest weak point is just sheer quantity of vocabulary (and comprehension speed but well. that’s a work in progress) and what better way to work on that than to read more.

I’ve been reading manga lately to try to do so and I’ve been really enjoying it! It’s still difficult for sure, but as expected my problem is really just vocabulary. 99% of the time once I look up the words I don’t know I understand what’s being said just fine, and that feels really good! It’s a great feeling to be able to genuinely enjoy a story in Japanese, as hard as it may be sometimes - I’ve definitely come a long way

It’s winter break right now so finding time for reading has been easy; the real test comes when school starts back up. Here’s hoping

What I'm Reading

I have a bunch of first volumes of various manga from a mandarake order a while back to let me try out different series, many of which I either haven’t touched yet or have found overwhelming in the past. But as I also have no self-control, I have a fresh mandarake order on the way as a Christmas present, where I had a much better concept of what I’d like to read than the guesswork on my previous order

So with that I’ll have a number of different series I can try out; I also ordered a few light novels, so we’ll see how I like them! Lately I’ve been reading ラストゲーム on a whim - it’s one that I bought the first volume of in my old mandarake order, and I just got around to reading it. I’ve been enjoying it a lot, very much shoujo rom-com chaos as is often my brand, and the rest of the series is on the way now, so I’m looking forward to (hopefully) reading the rest of that! That’s 11 volumes so at my speed that may very well take me beyond this challenge even, but we’ll see!

First of all, welcome! Glad to have you join us! In terms of remembering to read daily, I think making it a specific part of my daily routine has helped me. For past challenges, my routine has been, I get home from work/finish working, eat dinner, then read as much or as little as I’m feeling up to that day (usually shooting for at least half an hour of time). Then I post an update here before launching into my “I’m done with the day” activities (which usually means watching TV for hours on end because once I start, I find it very difficult to stop ). Not sure if that’s super helpful, but that’s what I do - I think posting in the thread daily can be really helpful in terms of accountability, and/or creating a calendar “main post” to check off boxes for each day that you read.

Thank you so much! I’ll try to do that - maybe it’d be good as a before-bed-wind-down activity for me!

As for your question, I would personally recommend to ditch anything you’re not really feeling. You don’t have to finish things just because you started them necessarily; if you don’t enjoy it anymore, I’d say throw it away and pick something new that you do. Unless you do enjoy it but are currently going through a dry moment, in which case I personally think it’s fine to push through, if you are nonetheless interested in what’s happening next or something like a dry resource, like textbooks and so on. Other than that, as @windupbird mentioned, I think posting updates frequently (many of us do it daily) and engaging with the thread’s discussion or simply posting what you did is a huge help that keeps you coming back every day to the dynamic of reading → posting, and so on. Ultimately I think it’s healthy to have a balance between the challenge being work that can push your ability further, and also something that you enjoy doing.

Hi! Thanks @windupbird for setting up this challenge, it’s promising to be really fun! I’ve never participated in challenges like this, but always thought that I was missing out on the collective spirit and the extra motivation from external accountability. Seeing how welcoming and supportive WK community is, I decided that this is a perfect opportunity to give it a try!

I still have very little idea how this whole challenge thing works, so I guess I’ll look at what everyone else is doing and try to follow suit. Here’s my calendar (thanks to whoever came up with it!):

Goals and books

I don’t have any specific reading goals right now, but I’m currently at the point where I understand most of the basic grammar and quite a bit of Kanji, but lack a lot of simple vocabulary, and find reading to require quite a lot of effort. So my plan is to focus on just reading whatever I feel like – to get into the habit. Hopefully, over time, as I get more reading experience, it will become less and less laborious. I also hope to somehow maintain the balance between effort and fun, so that I habitualize it rather than burn out, _{^{even though I don’t have a solid plan for this last part}}

Here are a few things that I’ve been reading lately, so I’ll probably be mostly continuing with these:

• よつばと！ – I started it from scratch 2-3 times already and have read through about half of the first volume so far, but even though it’s probably the easiest entry on my list (at least, for me), and it’s been quite fun to read, somehow I can’t get through with it (and I have all 15 volumes sitting on the shelf waiting…) Let’s see how it goes this time around.
• 五等分の花嫁 – Much harder for me than よつば, but I enjoy it quite a lot. I’m currently on the second volume, and waiting to get to the part of the story not covered by the anime with both excitement and dread (as in, will I still be able to follow it without knowing what is supposed to happen?)
• 時をかける少女 – I tried it a few months ago, and it was a bit hard, but within reason. I like the story (which I vaguely remember from the anime), so maybe I’ll push through this time.
• 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱 – Given its writing style, this one is very hard for me right now, but I occasionally attempt to read it “immersion-style”, i.e. without looking anything up, just trying to absorb as much as I can – which is to say, not that much

I also have a bunch of other books and manga, some of them perhaps more appropriate for my level, and some completely out of reach (e.g. 〈物語〉シリーズ), so I might add more as time goes.

I’m still a bit uncertain about doing them myself (since I’m a bit too wordy, but not at all chatty, if this makes any sense), so I’d be happy to get some insight into why people like doing them. Thanks!

Why I like doing daily updates:

• Can document what I’ve read that day. (I tend to jump between different books or manga instead of reading through one thing before starting another thing.)

• Can document how much I’ve read. I mostly read ebooks, so I write the amount in percentage.

• Can write about how it went, whether it was a good/bad day for reading, busy or not so busy, etc.

• I can know for sure that I actually did read that day and not misremember or anything. I’m terrible at keeping track of time. Time blind kinda, if that makes sense xD

• Share words I’ve learned, fun facts, what I thought about a book, etc.

• Can go through the posts later to figure out how long I’ve spent reading a particular book (even if I read other stuff in-between).

And it’s fun to read other people’s updates too! :3

Hello! This is one of my first posts on the forums, despite being a long-time lurker. I’m excited to do this challenge! I’ve been reading the second volume of a light novel series (ティアムーン帝国物語) since August, and I could use the consistency. I’m a slow reader (about 12.5 pages/hour) but it’s so fun that I really don’t mind!

What I'm Reading

1. 三ツ星カラーズ

• as of December 29th, I’ve read chapter 1, chapter 3, half of chapter 4 and half of chapter 2 (I’m catching up with the Absolute Beginner Book Club)

Progress

January:

• 1st: I spent 37 minutes reading 僕らはみんな河合荘. I started by rereading pages 9 and 10, to verify how much I remembered from last time and then read 3 more pages. I’m currently at chapter 1, page 13/15.

• 2nd: I decided it was a good moment to catch up with the ABBC. I reread the first half and then read the second half of 三ツ星カラーズ chapter 4. It took me exactly 30 minutes. I learnt about the use of やがる. Now I’m completely caught up. Next week, I’ll start reading chapter 5.
  Later during the day, I discovered that chapter 1 of おじさまと猫 is available for free (for a limited time) on BookWalker. I read 5 chapters / 24 pages (in 42 minutes). It’s quite simple and extremely cute!

• 3rd: At first, I wasn’t sure if I should start another manga, but there are still 16 days until the first volume of 地縛少年花子くん expires and I noticed it has furigana over every kanji, so I couldn’t resist. I read 16 pages in 57 minutes.
  I also needed some more of おじさまと猫, so I reread chapter 5 and read chapter 6 and 7. It took me 30 minutes.
  Hopefully, I can finish them both in time.

• 4th: I felt like reading some more of 地縛少年花子くん and I got really into it. I read pages 16-39 and spent 1h46min doing it. Even though I’ve already seen the anime, so I know what’s going to happen, reading the manga is a lot of fun. BBC’s vocabulary list is quite useful. Thanks to it, I can read faster than I would normally do. Having said that, the list isn’t complete, so I added more words to it. Maybe someone will use it later on.

• 5th: I managed to finish the first chapter of 地縛少年花子くん. I read pages 40-55. In total, I was reading for 1h 36min. There were many words I didn’t know and didn’t find on the vocabulary list, but thanks to furigana I was able to figure out what the characters were saying. I’m enjoying the manga more than I thought I would.

• 6th: 地縛少年花子くん (1h 24min) and 幸色のワンルーム (1h 5min)

• 7th: 幸色のワンルーム (41min) and おじさまと猫 (30min)

• 8th: 地縛少年花子くん (33min) and 幸色のワンルーム (54min)

• 9th: 地縛少年花子くん (1h 18min) and 幸色のワンルーム (30min)

From a quick glance at the previous threads, it seems like a lot of people tend to post daily updates as well as maintaining their summary post. So, a question for those of you who have tried it before: in what ways do you find daily updates help you (and/or others) – psychologically or otherwise? I’m still a bit uncertain about doing them myself (since I’m a bit too wordy, but not at all chatty, if this makes any sense), so I’d be happy to get some insight into why people like doing them. Thanks!

First off, I definitely agree with everything @Redglare said! I think doing the daily posts has helped me maintain accountability too, because it’s an easy way to show that I’ve read that day and track what I’ve read (obviously, the summary post does that as well, but it feels less “visible” to others since it’s just editing a previous post vs. a brand new post).

I also just enjoy sharing things that are cute or that made me laugh or fun new words I learned or whatever I may or may not have been responsible for bringing the tanuki into the last thread so for me, it can be fun and motivating to share with the group via daily posts. I think it’s nice to be able to see what people are up to each day, and I think it adds to the team spirit feeling as well ^^ I know I’ve also gotten good ideas for additional things to read/check out from reading other people’s update posts in previous threads.

One thing I will say about my experience doing daily posts is that it can become a double-edged sword of sorts - doing daily posts does add more time to the overall process (especially if you’re me and you spend hours writing posts as a general rule), and that can make it feel a bit burdensome sometimes. I’m going to keep doing daily posts this challenge, because I do have fun sharing, but I’m going to try not to pressure myself to post super detailed updates all the time, if I’m tired and don’t feel like it - some people’s update posts are much more simple than mine have historically been, and that’s totally fine as well.
