🤡 Yo this book is hard!

I mean, I think I’m gonna keep reading it, so I was technically right? I’m taking a break to rest my brain after about 2500 characters (at least it’s short so I’m already over 3% through). Guess I’m been slacking in my studying to not know 瑞雲 (auspicious clouds!), 長軀 (it just means tall 😭), 垢抜ける (to refine), etc haha. Got my words mined extremely easily. Sentences have been long and descriptive, but it’s the beginning so we’ll see. Also they threw this at me – the text is easy but this is sure a way to transcribe it:

──武蔵野市から、お越しィの、フジタ、あ、サナミ、さま。フジタ、あ、サナミ、さま。お言づけが、アございますのォで、お近くの、おー売り場まで、お立ち寄り、い、ください・まっせ。フジタ、あサナミッさま、フジタ、あ、サナミィ、さま……

Anyway, all that said, ignoring my glacial pace and fatigue, I enjoyed the opening a lot? I wanted weird and the main character seems plenty eccentric already. I think I’ll probably enjoy the book if I can hang with it.

💮 A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar : 3 entries

I feel like every couple of times I read Ouran, I’ve cracked the code, but what I really have done is get later into a chapter where more action picks up so it tends to be easier to read. And then the start of every chapter hits like a slap to the face. Well, I read a few more pages today. Turns out I’m 4 pages from finishing last week’s portion. When I realized that I was like “surely I can squeeze in another reading session” and then I looked at the very next page I had to read and noped out. 😭

Well, there are 18 volumes in this series, so I expect I’ll get better eventually…

This however does mean that I’m not sure I will catch up before my house guest arrives.

Finished the N section for the dictionary. I won’t quite catch up this week but as long as I pick it back up after they leave, I’ll probably catch up next week.

Yesterday and today I was in a very tech tinkery mood, so I messed around with a bunch of japanese adjacent technology 😆 Yesterday I spent a bit of time working on setting up a virtual drive and installing DOS for my PC98 emulator, was only partially successful, then today I finally started tinkering with my PSP. Compared to dealing with nintendo products, getting custom firmware on a PSP is **trivial** lmao. Complete success on that front, and spent a few hours today messing around with games. I need to research more, most of what I tried was not at all what I expected!

**Read:**

- 3月のライオン ch 3, 4 - about halfway done with this volume, but there’s 2 more shogi columns that I think I’ll be trying to read, so really maybe more like 1/3rd of the way through time wise 😅

- 📙 Satori Reader - 壁の穴 - Cute story, 8 episodes in, I feel more invested in what’s going to happen than I did with 聞き耳ラジオ. Still great language learning wise, tons of kanji reading practice, useful notes, practicing understand whole sentences and so on.
- 🏝 ISLAND (VN) - 1k char, 20min. Not expecting my speed to pick up just yet, I have time 🙂
- 🍀 よつばと！- Finished volume 15, meaning finished Yotsuba for now 😁 Learned about 花まる in this volume.

August 9th!

A little over 3 pages of コンビニ人間 today.  
I need to read 2 chapters of Shadow’s house tomorrow to stay on track with all of my bookclubs. I usually only manage 1 chapter of that in a day, so I’m hoping that the fact that those 2 chapters will take me to the end of Volume 9 will motivate me to power through it!

This just gets more wholesome by the day, these two are adorable 😂 They’re all just perpetually confused, it’s cute xD

This would be “[giving up on] being loved” or more literally “receiving someone coming to like you.” もらう is for receiving things from other people, so when it’s connected to a verb like that, someone else is doing the verbing while you’re just doing the receiving of it

(At least I’m assuming the の does mean that あきらめる applies to it too. “Saying you’ll give up on the person you love is the same as saying you’re giving up on being loved.” I think the last line is probably more like “It’s unrealistic,” since it’s not like those two are things you can just decide to do or that you can control.)

reread 初恋 and ボーイミーツマリア, as if I don’t still have a bunch of other unread manga, but at least that’s two more manga I can accurately grade and also review on Natively now. Also, man, Boy Meets Maria really hits you in the feels

I’m not sure that it can work that way grammatically. I’m not super confident, but I think I’d go for “Saying you’ll give up on the person you love is as unrealistic as saying you’ll have somebody else love you[\*]”. (That is, you can’t fix a one sided love either by arbitrarily declaring either that you’ll stop loving them or that they’ll start loving you.) Context would probably tell us whether this makes sense, as usual.

[\*] not the clearest English phrasing, but I mean in the sense of ケーキを作ってもらった == “I had them make me a cake”, where you are instigating the ‘somebody else does something for you’ action, which is why it’s もらう and not くれる.

マダムが教えてくれたこと (12 pages of Chapter 1)

マダムが教えてくれたこと is quite cute, and there are several separate stories within the chapter that span 3~4 pages, which is nice. Today I’ll try to do a bit more of grammar and probably start ahead on next week’s あん (which is the longest week so far) while I’m sitting in the metro, since I’m meeting some old colleagues for lunch.

I decided to set two of my book clubs aside for August: あん and マリアビートル (which I barely started). I’m in the mood for suspense and horror right now, and while 予言の島 and 木洩れ日に泳ぐ魚 fit the bill nicely, あん feels too gentle and マリアビートル too action-packed for my mood right now. I’ll definitely get back to them later though.

So I spent yesterday reading samples. There’s this Kadokawa horror sale on Bookwalker, and I’m trying to decide what to get. [きつねのはなし](https://bookwalker.jp/deb13c5192-0160-42f8-ae4c-a6395512bd0c/), by the same author who wrote Tatami Galaxy, while not part of the sale, seems to fit my mood perfectly. It’s vaguely creepy in a quiet, subdued way. I also read half the sample of [かにみそ](https://bookwalker.jp/deee345518-1535-40a1-922d-f6c7e912abbe/). @windupbird is absolutely right about the vibes the protagonist gives off (there’s more examples later), but somehow I can’t stop reading. I think I’m hoping for him to get his comeuppance by the crab. 😂

Today I plan to finish the かにみそ sample (I’ll read the sample to the end before deciding to buy, because I’m still worried about what might happen, animal-wise). I also want to read the samples of [サマーサイダー](https://bookwalker.jp/de932965b7-94f4-4621-abec-60020c5885d8/), [ぞぞのむこ](https://bookwalker.jp/de33198332-20fb-4655-97bd-34e332518ae9/) and [のぞきめ](https://bookwalker.jp/de6a151382-6a38-4ef8-9ad5-6068a60e8ed8/). Lots of work!

And then I also want to start (how many hours are there in the day again? 😂) 家庭用安心坑夫, because I set up a[thread](https://community.wanikani.com/t/x/62906) for it and I can’t bear to see it empty 👀

So far yes! It keeps delivering what most of us reading it enjoy, so I’m sure you’ll like this week too 😉 . But it has a very long scene that is worth reading in one sitting ideally so I’ll probably suggest a rest point as well this week, otherwise you end up with those 19.7k characters 😂 . Great if you’re hooked and having fun, but not so great if you need a rest; the scene I mentioned goes for ~11k.

and i’ve now finally finished case 3!!! good case overall, tho probably would have been better if i hadn’t played it over like, two and a half weeks. unexpectedly teared up at the end when there’s the side by side comparison of shigaraki in his pictures of gregory and edgeworth, idk whether it was the slow slide or his narration but it really got to me :') if anything happens to this man i will be very upset

today’s nhk article was[this one](https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20230810/k10014158681000.html) and today’s fate episode was ~~uh i didn’t write down the name~~ サビルバラ’s. nothing of note there, really. some more y5, kiryu is (rightfully tbh) in his angry era.

words that stood out:  
逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ)２：釈放(しゃくほう) (release, acquittal), だの (and, and the like (as だの。。。だの)  
龍(りゅう)が如(ごと)く：けったい (odd, strange, weird. kansai-ben), 牽制(けんせい) (keeping in check, restraint, curbing), 心算(つもり) (intention. this is 義訓(ぎくん) and not the typical reading)
