I’ve been reading 蜘蛛ですが、なにか？ every day. Read 8 pages today and over 20 pages yesterday. Pretty interesting. 60/329 pages (18% done).

I’ve been a bit lazy on one hand and wanted to eliminate distractions, so I sit down with the book and a pencil and read. When there’s a word I don’t know or some grammar that doesn’t make sense to me I highlight it. So far there hasn’t been a case that I couldn’t understanding something at all, only that I missed some nuance or a detail. Also I noticed that if I don’t look up something right away I sometimes look at the kanji/vocab and realise I actually know them, just can’t easily recall.

And then when I’m done reading for the day I go over the read pages and look up the stuff I was really curious about.

I think I sped up considerably and can do around 10-12 pages per hour. I will try to read around 10 pages everyday.

Satori Reader: Kiki-Mimi Radio, Episodes 26 and 27 (finale).

End of the series. I ended up liking it quite a bit, I didn’t expect at all that it was going to have the development it had but it was a nice surprise. I’ll make sure to give it a reread some time in the near future to practice the things learned. I know they’re planning to release the option to listen to all of the episodes of the different series in one go; I hope they are able to do so soon, that would be amazing!

Starting a new series soon; if not tomorrow, then probably the day after.

Challenge Tracker

I may not have remembered to update my tracker on here every day, but I haven’t missed a day of reading so far! I’ve only been sticking with 殺人出産. This week is the final section of the title story, which is exciting!

For this upcoming week, I want to try to alternate what I’m reading each day. I find I have trouble juggling multiple books at once. I don’t know if it’s that I find it difficult, or if it’s simply because one inevitably catches my interest more than the others. I guess this is a challenge within a challenge. :sweat_smile:

Day 20: June 20th
What did I read?: よつばと！ Vol. 15
How much did I read?: 46 pages (1 chapter) - finished the volume
How long did it take me?: 39 min

Well, today was basically the opposite of yesterday :rofl: I got everything done that I needed to get done, and I still somehow had energy to read Yotsuba at the end of the day! Once again, the volume ended in a really sweet and heartwarming way. :blush: Yotsuba looks so cute with her new ランドセル :heart:

June 20 Update

Today’s reading material was once again the same. This time I powered through about 50 pages, and it only took about an hour and a half. Especially with the lack of furigana, I’m surprised at the rate at which I’m flying through this manga. It’s really interesting (though I get the impression I definitely won’t get the happy ending I want :sob:), so I’m looking forward to reading more of it over the next couple of days. It’s likely I’ll finish it this week.

Summary

I fell in love with the demo but then hesitated to buy because of the price tag. Waiting for a sale or my backlog to become less scary right now… So I really only played the first chapter. It grabbed my attention because of the art style. The art is by my favorite mangaka ever. :heart: I really like the comic-y style and playing detective has always been a thing I’m fond of.

Anyway, I’m always happy when I see someone like something I love. :blush: I hope you continue to enjoy it. How far have you come, in non spoilery terms?

As for the reading part of this thread, I don’t remember when I last logged it exactly.

I read a bit of リゼロ and one chapter 妖怪の子預かります during the day. Before bed I felt like treating myself to a bit of あせとせっけん :heart: but then I couldn’t stop after one chapter and ended up finishing the main story. Luckily there’s still bonus chapters/ side Stories/ after stories, so there’s still a good 100 pages left.

Yesterday I read 4 more chapters of 妖怪の子預かります, leaving only the last.

Which I read this morning before work. I really enjoyed this book! I’ll be continuing the series when my kindle unlimited subscription runs out for sure. :slight_smile:

Did not read much–but still managed a page in カラフル before I fell asleep on the bus! Tried to make up for it by reading signs as I walked around Tokyo.

I’m SO CLOSE to finishing Chapter 10… but must sleep now. No use in forcing myself to read if I’m not going to actually pronounce the words and look up the one’s I don’t know.

Tomorrow is back to my regular schedule, so I’m excited to wrap up Chapter 10, look up the words I’ve highlighted, and get back to posting here each day :sparkles:

Day 20.
Read 4 more pages, completing page 15. Also There’s mismatch between pages. IBC says it should ends at p20, but in bookwalker edition stop phrase happens in the second half of p19. And in bookwalker edition bookwalker page number and actual book page number are the same (doesn’t happen with manga so far, where there are some filler pages in the beginning before “official” page counter starts)

Day 21.
Hey, it’s 0:35. I think it’s time to read Touhou manga before I’ll go to sleep.
ETA: 6 more pages of forbidden scrollery, current progress 43/153(28%)

Summary post

June 21 update Decided today to time myself reading a full chapter of Kikis, to see how manageable that felt as I just don’t really enjoy reading things a few pages at a time. I read chapter 2, which is 13 pages in the version I have. I was trying to read to pretty full comprehension so I was looking up all unknown words (I looked up 56 words according to my takoboto list) and stopping to puzzle things out. 13 pages took me just under 2 and a half hours to read. It’s definitely a long time…but not so long that it feels impossible to do in one sitting/one day.

Also, I am now down to ナルト2 being my only non-bookclub schedule read so need to have a think about what things I want to pick up next. I have some more volumes of ナルト and やがて君になる already so they would be the obvious ones to continue with, however I’m not feeling in a huge rush to continue with やがて君になる right now for some reason, even though I’m enjoying it. I do really want to read more ボーイズ but it’s a bit pricey so trying to hold out until it’s on sale. Tempted to add in another novel or light novel as the bookclub I’m in for Kikis schedule is fairly slow…but that might be a bad idea haha. I have 4 more chapters left of ナルト so I guess got that time to decide!

・Finished Subete ga F ni Naru (97% → 100%) Pretty happy about managing to keep up with the pace of the Advanced book club :eyes: :sparkles:

・Read one and a half chapter of Honzuki 5. (24% → 30%) Five days since I previously left off in the middle of a chapter so had to re-read a bit. One of the cons of reading lots of stuff at the same time xD

I’ve forgotten how noisy it can get with lots of people in the house, and even noisier when the tinier people don’t have school anymore. Not ideal reading conditions :skull_and_crossbones:

And only 10 pages yesterday… it’s been a while since I read so little. That’s because I spent 3 hours watching last weekend’s climbing competition in 盛岡, which took most of my free time. I’d love to say it was listening practice, but uh I’m really not paying attention to what the commentators are saying.

I started a new Satori Reader series as well as the IBC book. It has been a very productive day but boy did it take time. I’m looking forward to getting used to both stories and their styles so it doesn’t take as much time and effort.

I was a week behind with this book club, but now I’m all caught up ^^ Now I’m remembering why I stopped reading this manga the first time around, though…suffering a serious case of “I know all the words but I still don’t really know what this means” at times. :upside_down_face:

Sometimes it helps if I just go on reading for a couple panels and then come back to reread the sentence again with that additional context. But not always. …I feel like I put more things into deepl today than I’d really care to admit :upside_down_face: I just do not feel secure in my understanding at all sometimes, and I don’t like that feeling. I’m hoping it’ll get better as I read further and get more exposure to the way these characters speak.

June 21 Update

Today’s reading was once again 明日、私は誰かのカノジョ. I read 50 pages in about 1.5 hours (and looked up every word I didn’t know). I’ve said this multiple times already, but I really like this story, and the characters in it (which is probably why I’m reading so much of it each day). I’ll probably finish this manga tomorrow, and definitely left off on a cliffhanger tonight (though I’m pretty sure that my hunch about Yuki rejecting Souda and going back to her old life is going to come true – it makes me very sad). Still, this has been a manga that I’m really glad I bought on a whim.

Well, for a change of pace, I read ボーイズ・ラン・ザ・ライオット 1 today, and it was amazing! Thanks @sycamore for the recommendation. In particular, I really loved that the plot involves a transgender character rather than revolving around the fact that they are transgender (not sure if I’m making sense or not, but anyway).
While I do not like reading manga on a screen, I learned through the book walker freebie thread that volume 1 is free right now, so it pushed me over the edge, and I have no regrets about it.
Slightly more spoilery, but boy, a lot of things 迅 do are causing me a heart attack. Also, when both 凌 and him first come to see 逸香, it made me realize that they look really scary when you don’t know them :sweat_smile:

Yaaay! So happy to hear that you also loved it.

This makes perfect sense and was one of the main things I loved about it as well. And I think it makes totally sense that it was written by a transgender author because, well, I feel like cis writers are way more likely to stumble into the trap of making a characters identity their only defining feature. Whereas actual trans folks know that quite often that’s one of the least interesting things you have going on haha (or at least it’s just one part of your identity rather than all you are)

Especially some of the stuff where 凌 can express themselves through the t-shirt design in a way he’s not able to do in real life hit so hard for me as an experience I’ve had (not re fashion specificly but finding some creative outlet to say things). And yeah…I’m a little worried for 迅 too! I do love all the characters so far and I’m also really excited about the new character at the end!

Not sure how long I’ll manage to stop myself from reading the rest…it’s so tempting just to race through it to find out what’s going to happen next!

I finished chapter 10 of カラフル、and went back to look up the words I had highlighted while reading!

The words that stood out:
  • 波乱万丈はらんぼんじょう = Stormy and full of drama, twists and turns
  • 煙けむたがる = to dislike the company of (someone), consider (someone) to be a nuisance. Also literally sensitive to smoke.
  • 世間せけん = Society, the world – unusual reading for 間
  • 真っ只中まっただなか = right in the midst of
  • 緑青色ろくしょういろ = Grean-blue color – unusual reading! But the ろく for 緑 reminds me of 録
  • 木漏れ日こもれび = Sunlight filtering through the trees --another unusual reading, this time for 木
