I didn’t have much time today because of various Easter activities. I had some time in the evening but I was pretty exhausted. So I only read 3 chapters in total but that’s more than enough imo.

会長はメイド様! 1 (Ch 1) Probably shouldn’t have started yet another new series… but whatever.
マギ７(Ch 64-65) These chapters seemed a bit easier than the last few. If I’d had more time I would’ve read more. I wanna know what happeeeeens.

@Cathm2 The horror would dip me out instantly I’m afraid. And I did look at it when it was up for a bbc (I think it was bbc anyway) and the art didn’t appeal to me, so I skipped it then.

I’m also on self-imposed book buying ban. Reduce the pile of unread books/manga I already own, then I can think about buying more.

That said, I’m trying to decide what I should tackle. I looked through my book meter, skipping most of the long series I have, and focused on the shorter ones. Still leaves me with 13 options, of which 12 are complete series.

The thing that would make sense is to reread 結婚しても恋してる１and then continue on with 2 and 3. Because you know, I’ve already started it. But I also remember the chapters feeling pretty episodic and not being in chronological order. It does tell the story of the couple, but maybe not for now?

Another I could look at would be ふしぎ駄菓子屋 銭天堂１… I started that last year and read the first story. It was a little tricky with grammar, but just enough to challenge me. But it might be another challenging read and that won’t work paired with Loopers. Also, I just remembered it is episodic, so while each story tells a complete one, it probably isn’t what I’m looking for right now…

A lot of them are random complete shojo series (romance I would guess) that I picked up at bookoff when I lived in Japan. But not all of them.

What short(-ish) manga series should I read

• 未成年だけどコドモじゃない, random shojo manga (I wish I would have looked up the translation of the title before buying, I think… )
• 恋愛カフェイン, random shojo romance manga
• あのコの、トリコ。, random shojo romance manga (perhaps I should have done so with this one too… xD)
• 花のみぞ知る, I believe I got this recommended here on the forum at some point
• ちょびっツ, anime that was popular in my teens that I enjoyed watching at that time, so I got the manga for nostalgia and to compare?
• テンカウント, well known BL manga
• GIRL FRIENDS, yuri manga, can’t remember how I came to own this
• 不可解なぼくのすべてを, past book club choice
• にじいろフォトグラフ, recommended by Seanblue, nominated in BBC but never wins…
• シャッター街のさくら姫, recommended by Rodan, renovating a shopping center/street

I’ve made some interesting/questionable choices sometimes in my buying decisions.

I love reading everyone’s posts and am finding them super motivating!

Week 1 review -
I feel like reading so much recently has gotten me over a hump.

At first I was trying to read everything intensively, because that was the only way in the past to understand anything. Now, I’ve settled into a routine that I’m finding way more interesting and is keeping me engaged in the Japanese language about twice as long as before:

Intensive reading (half of my time)
ジャム屋さん Jam Maker on Satori

• Listen to the previous episode all the way through, do my flashcards
• Listen and read along to the next episode
• Read through sentence by sentence and look up words I don’t know, read the explanatory notes
• Listen through once more perhaps, choose 3 words to make flashcards (where that is the only unknown word), if there is a kanji with furigana that I’m pretty sure I can recognise by now I add it to my custom list of known kanji.

Extensive reading (other half, if I have time)
十分で読める伝記 に年生 ー エジソン (Biographies you can read in 10 minutes - Thomas Edison)

• Reread the last few pages
• Read the next few pages. Underline words I don’t know
• Red the first new page again much more slowly, normally now with the context (before and after) I can understand it, which leads me to remember some words I hadn’t immediately recognised. Doing it this way means I only need to look up 1-2 words on the page to understand it rather than 6-10 before. It’s way more fun!
• When I look up words, then I look them up in my monolingual dictionary first. First, I look up a couple of words I already know (that’s already an interesting challenge). Then I look up the new words and see if I can work out what they mean.
• Sometimes I still have to look them up or other words from the definition in an English dictionary, but I’m finding this process enables me to stay in the Japanese language longer each time.

Fun fact: 花のみぞ知る and テンカウント are made by the same artist. I can’t remember much from either of those, but past redglare (2015-18) rated them as 8/10 and 7/10 on myanimelist, respectively. I don’t really read BL anymore and that was a long time ago, so I’m not standing by those ratings, haha. (Was also prior to starting Japanese studies.)

4月4~8日

Read: 剣が君
Since my last post I’ve continued playing this game, currently I’ve finished all the ends and afterstories for my first route and gone through the common route and first chapter of my second. Overall I’ve played 30.4 hours according to steam so I think I’m gonna take a break to read something else before I continue the next route. Luckily the difficulty stayed pretty much the same throughout this one, nothing ended up quite as bad as the difficulty of the beginning. There were however quite a few words I knew but not the kanji for them and I’m having fun collecting them when I see them. So far I have: 吃驚(びっくり), 餓鬼(がき), 軟派(なんぱ), and for some reason 我儘(わがまま)(have seen this one before), 我侭(わがまま), and 我が侭(わがまま) all separately. Due to this I’m needing to do a lot of lookups though as this game has almost no furigana, not even on the names when character’s are first introduced.

read another chapter of kiki’s delivery service, this one new year’s themed (the one where she has to make sure the clock sounds at midnight), very fun chapter, had a good time with it. featured よりによって which isn’t particularly notable, but i came across it in the jpdp 逆転検事(ぎゃくてんけんじ) deck and just really like the word!

words that stood out: 大(おお)みそか (also 大晦日(おおみそか), new year’s eve), 高(たか)らか (loud, sonorous, ringing), and 至急(しきゅう) (urgent, immediate, asap).

Work and other things have unfortunately sapped my motivation to post for a few days… on the other hand, I managed to finally finish the damn お隣の天使様 side story volume that’s been haunting me for months and managed to put the series to rest (save for the occasional volume every few months because LN authors work like machines, apparently).

Word of the Day: 日曜大工(にちようだいく) - weekend carpenter; do-it-yourselfer. Kind of a fun 四字熟語(よじじゅくご) referring to someone who only does carpentry on the weekends, aka a hobbyist.

Back to my Home Post

I was reading the two 4-koma strips in the second chapter of Tobira. The big topic of this chapter seems to be styles of speech, so there are examples of informal and formal in these strips.

The chapter final text is about sentence-final particles. In the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar, we are currently reading about informal/formal Japanese, as well as exactly these particles. Sometimes things just come together that way.

I finished reading あなたに恋してもいいですか and it was just okay. Not a book I’d recommend but it was very short and easy to read, so it was a good confidence booster.

I’ll look for something else to read later today on the side for when I’m not doing the 9-nine club reading. Seeing people talk about 推し、燃ゆ kind of makes me want to pick it up again but I read the first 15~ pages back in September of last year and it was too difficult for me to really enjoy it. I’ll look through the stuff I own and see what peaks my interest.

The con was a lot of fun too!

It was a nice surprise to find some Shinymas stuff at the con. I had to buy the Rinze figure as soon as I saw it. The artbook is cute too, its from the first year anniversary back in 2019 so it’s all older stuff but I’ve always loved all the art in the game. There’s some staff interviews in the back of the book that I’ll give a read later too.

I was actually surprised there wasn’t more リコリス・リコイル stuff at the con considering how popular the anime was I couldn’t find the LN there but I bought all the manga that is out for it.
I did manage to find some K-on stuff there that I wanted to buy but it was far more expensive than everything else. They had a deluxe CD set thing there for K-on but it was well over $200. Maybe if I see it again there next year I’ll consider it

I’m glad to see Girl Friends is winning! It’s probably my favorite manga ever. I read it like a decade ago (in English) so I’ve forgotten most of the details by now but I’ve been considering re-reading it in jp for a while now. I hope you like it if it ends up winning your poll

Also started playing Mysteria Occult Shadows for PC. Some of the language in that games is ridiculous but the game should be pretty short. Probably won’t take that long to finish it.

• 屠(ほふ)る = to slaughter. Has Furigana. With the same theme, 屠畜(とちく),   屠殺(とさつ)
• 主立(おもだ)った = leading (personnel)
• 生(い)き様(ざま) = way of living. With Rendaku. There is also 死(し)に様(ざま).

Jumping onto this one a little late, but better late than never! I’m signed up for the N4 test in July this year so I need to get on with reading and listening. I’ve made a start with reading Shirokuma cafe and have been reading Web News Easy every day this month so far. It’s getting easier with each article, but I’m not quite sure what to move onto next for more of a challenge!

I finished the first volume today. It really is quite an easy read (mostly because there is not much to read ).
I think story wise it won’t be my favorite manga, but I’ll keep reading at least the three free volumes. And after that I will decide if I want to continue…

ハピネス vol. 2 (p. 19 - p. 195) finished
I only had to look up a few words/kanji in the whole volume. That’s quite nice for a change

999 (end of scene 4 & beginning of scene 5 - ~1h30min)
It is still the most challenging reading material for me at the moment. I have to look up so many kanji/words. And I realized that I have less problem understanding what is being said, when there is dialogue. And the narrative text is the one responsible for my slow progress.
And scene 4 wasn’t done after 2 more sentences (as I thought the last time I had to stop reading). I needed another 1h15min to finish that scene (together that would be 2h45min just for one scene… ).

It’s getting easier with each article, but I’m not quite sure what to move onto next for more of a challenge!

Have you considered giving a book a try? I mean those things with just text and no images It will still be quite hard at N4 (gets better from N3 onwards so hang in there!) but if you have a look at the book clubs in the Absolute Beginner club (or if you’re in for a challenge, the Beginner club), there you can find a ton of explanations and answers to pretty much every question. And if it’s still too hard after a while, there’s nothing wrong with pausing it for a bit.

I read a lot of sentences from Kanji Study and came across some really interesting words!

Also read the 3rd episode from Sakura and Suzuki on Satori Reader! was surprised because it’s way easier compared to Kona’s Adventures or Jam Maker.

I’m not too keen about the story so I didn’t bother checking it out, but I had to continue because 1) it’s a good confidence booster and 2) I want to learn a lot of vocab and phrases young adults use.

Also came across a lot of unlocked and apprentice-level kanji from WK so that was realllyy very rewarding!

some interesting words from KS and SR

• びしょびしょ - (onomatopoeic or mimetic word) soaked, drenched, sopping, soppy, wet.
• 入金 - deposit, payment, money received, money due
• 目下 - at present, now
• 目上 - superiors, senior
• 口止め - forbidding to speak, muzzling someone, bribing into secrecy
• 口止め料 - hush money
• 方がいい - “had better” or “had better not”
• 恋しい - yearned for, miss
• 連絡 - contacting, getting in touch, communication, call

also omg, real people actually say ワクワク when they’re excited? I thought it was an Anya-exclusive word

What and how many pages I read:

My crazy workload is slowly getting less and less! I’m not yet up to my previous numbers but I’m trying…

What I read in April so far:

•   飼育 - this was such a good story! Looking forward to reading the other stories in the book.
•   水たまりで息をする - almost done!
•   理由 - just started

Plans for the week:

I am hoping to finish 水たまり today. Then I’ll see what to do with 理由 - the prologue started dense but then went ok, but now we have the full backstory in chapter 1, and it is pretty dense and tough, and I’m reading this on paper so lookups are not as easy… Luckily the author doesn’t use many kanji I don’t know, so it’s still manageable so far…
I also want to clean up my pile of started books a little bit. Maybe I should give 糞尿譚 another shot? I hope it would be a bit easier now after all the conversations I read recently…

Komi-san 2 : 123 → 189 (end of volume 2)
The Practice by Seth Godin : 0 → 10

Ended up reading five chapters of Komi-san. I kinda use watching the anime as a check on my understanding since I read this extensively (basically I look up very little) and sometimes I’m a bit disappointed in my understanding but mostly it is fine. After reading 2 chapters I decided I could probably watch another episode of the anime. But I was mid-episode when it wanted to cover the next chapter from where I stopped. So paused the episode and read the chapter, then went back to the anime.

And because I’d flipped through the last few chapters to see how interesting they looked (physical is so useful sometimes!), the last two had looked really interesting, so I read them. And in the last chapter of volume 2 I saw かしら (mentioned for all of you fellow dictionary club readers). ^^

So yeah, kinda accidentally read the rest. I only own one more Komi-san volume, but thankfully I have a few other slice of life manga that can take Komi’s slot when I finish that. So basically I’ll have three Japanese reads at once: hard read, story read (hard is also a story read), and something easy and episodic (likely to be slice of life).

Started The Practice by Seth Godin, today. He never disappoints, but this is not the kind of book to read quickly, I think. Probably easier to digest and think over it in smaller sessions. So I expect I will only read a few pages each time.

@pm215 Did you watch the qualifier for the new Blizt tourney? It was quite crazy. A good qualifier seed perhaps, but I missed the ability to figure out logic more (just too many items in path locations).

@Redglare Same artist?! Woot. I’m not a huge BL reader anymore either. Well, I never read a ton because expensive to buy manga, but certainly more before. If I can remember, I’ll let you know if they hold up!

@AzusaChan Now I really wonder where I heard about it. It was probably recommended way back in my slice of life manga recommendation thread. So many seems to like Girl Friends, so that makes me a lot more interested in it.
