Figured out the confusing part! Rereading from the first volume helped. Was confused about characters and their roles.

Bonus expression: 話の腰を折る = to interfere, to butt in, to interrupt someone
Story stuff: Character from volume 1 returned. Almost thought Jinshi played the role of that character but it was character playing the role of Jinshi (just this one time). Also Maomao getting (somewhat voluntarily) kidnapped is not the turn of events I expected (even thought it said so in the introduction). But it is cool to see how similar Maomao is to her foster father, as pointed out by Jinshi.
