There was not much time to read, so just some more sentences in the パラサイト・イヴ book. It is still pretty easy right now but I am sure it will be much harder later on, once they start to use all the biological vocabulary. Either way I need to pick up the pace or I won’t be done until Christmas Eve.
What did I read:
- 大海原と大海原, Pages 43-47
While the pages are 43-47, I technically read just 2, other ones were covers for chapter 3. Today’s pages went smooth, understood them without any issues. Chapter starts with Sakemichi repeating once more that Wadanohara, as well as her familiar, have to leave the village, because they have no place here. Wadanohara, in return, asks where Sakemichi was all this time and says that she was worried for him.
- 鹿の王, 1 page in a landscape mode.
I’m… not sure how to count pages here, because there are no numbers. I read 1 page in a landscape mode. It actually went better than I thought it would, and I’m surprised at the amount of furigana. Apparently, this novel is written mainly for teenagers? ＜光る葉＞の卵 chapter starts with a young guy rushing in a room, telling to his grandfather (or that’s what he calls him, that is) that “Glowing leafs” are seeming to die. They proceed to the room together, where the guy says with trembling lips that he took good care of algae, and changed water by grandather’s instruction. He then proceeds to reassure the guy that algae’s death isn’t his fault and points out that he should look closely at them. Young guy notices that there are eggs on algae.
Day 10 (9月 18日)
What did I read:
暁のヨナ , ch.35+おまけ, for the bookclub read-aloud. Before the session I did go through the chapter once again, and looked up some words as well… And with chapter35, we have now completed 6 volumes of Yona with the bookclub! Yay~ More 30 to go!!

Sept 16 - I (tried to) read 3 pages of 最後の一葉 from O. Henry (translated in Japanese) in my 10分で読めるお話 book. I didn’t understand much of it so I have to go back to it later.
Sept 17 - I was outside all day long so I thought I would give up reading on this day, but then I saw @ Redglare’s reply on this thread and it motivated me to read a little bit!! I read 7 pages of the manga at the beginning of the Barakamon fanbook.
Sept 18 - I read two articles related to what’s been happening to me : one article about a Japanese cultural event that took place in Paris (it was really nice!!) and the other about the current France-Australia issue. I also read the first 3 pages of 海が消える from 佐藤さとる.

Day 18: September 18
What did I read?: 夜は猫といっしょ Vol 1
How much did I read?: 15 pages
How long did it take me?: 23 min
I had a day today. (If you want, you can read about it in the complaining thread lol) But I did read something xD I started a new manga about a cat, which is extremely cute so far
The most relatable moment: the main character has only known the cat for 3 days and already has a camera roll full of cat pictures xD

I finally finished week 4 of 人間失格, that only took like an actual week (from when I finished the part for week 3). I did start in on week 5 as well though! I also read a bit more of リゼロ. There’s quite a bit of action, but the parts are also so long. … Maybe that’s also why 人間失格 is taking me so long?
And! This is not a book, but that’s why it’s especially exciting for me: I finished case 1 of 逆転検事2. It has been so long since I regularly played a game, so even this semi regular thing is making me super happy.
I read a few pages of 授乳,
Finished the part for week 6 of 授乳.
Work has been really busy this month, and will continue to be so, so finding time for a nice reading sessions has been difficult. Hope I can balance everything a bit better from now on.
September 19th - finished chapter 4 of 大海原と大海原 reading 4 non-trivial pages (+ a few trivial).
This means I’m ~ 3.5 weeks ahead of the book club schedule, I’m still trying to decide if I should read something else and let the book club catch up, or just keep going as this is the most progress I’ve ever made in a manga on my own.
I am going in for surgery on my left arm on the 27th but I’m hoping to maybe keep up my reading during my recovery, but no promises.
Read section 2, Chapter 7 in 手紙!
A really pleasent chapter! Lately starting to wonder if I’m tense for no reason… but thinking that makes me put my guard back up.
Due to life being how it can be, I’m so wiped out. But it feels good to keep up with these challenge with you all
日本語: I read a lot of 鋼の錬金術師 (finished v3), a fair amount of はめふら 10 (started new novel), and some of 魔王城でおやすみ.
Read-aloud: We read a chapter of ふしぎの国のバード.
中国語: I read 给丈母娘的礼物. 送 is pretty much 送る, yay.
Another week completed, success!
Almost forgot to make an update today. I have finished reading through volume 2 of Polar Bear Café Today’s Special. There was an panel where Grizzly says 和気藹々 and the last part makes this a たる adjective. I had not seen this before, was quite interesting to discover on a sunday afternoon. Volume is pretty varied as usual, the coffee stories with Misaki are always kinda fun learning opportunities and also showed up briefly.
Got one more volume left and then I’m caught up with the series.
September 19 Tiny read today. Did many study
What did I read:
- 大海原と大海原, Pages 48-49
The conflict continues, Sakemichi insists that Wadanohara has to leave, while Wadanohara says that she looked for him. Sakemichi says that if she won’t leave by herself - he will force her out.
- 鹿の王, 光る葉
Finished reading 光る葉 chapter, which seems to be a sort of a prologue. I wonder now if a boy and a grandfather from this chapter will show up in later chapters (I guess they will) and, well, who are they in the first place, and also I wonder if these algae have any meaning to the story by themselved, or if it’s a philosophy behind this chapter is what does matter later. Story:: Grandfather tells that when these “glowing leafs” plant seeds, they shortly die, all at once, without exception. The boy, seemingly sad, asks if it means that they die without raising their children , to which grandfather nods and tells that there are unexpectedly a lot of species like this. The boy then asks how the algae died, because he finds it weird that you would die by laying an egg, and asks if it’s an egg what kills it. Grandfarther says that it’s not the egg, but “the seed of illness”, and that this “seed” exists in every living creature, proceeding that if you can win over it - you’ll live, but if you don’t - you die, and that’s how it is with everything.
Read three pages today and yesterday! Today’s pages went so much faster because we are back with ボンボン and ナコ, and they are having a big fight, because ナコ wants to teach ボンボン tricks, and ボンボン says that his (? actually not at all sure what ボンボン’s gender is… and it feels weird to use pronouns for ボンボン!! This is such an interesting aspect of reading in Japanese!) anyway, ボンボン’s mother said corgi’s should think for themselves, and ボンボン is not going to do a trick just because ナコ said, and maybe ナコ should do the trick if she wants to do tricks so badly. I was entertained.
Edit to add fun phrases
由緒正しい・ゆいしょただしい・having an ancient and honorable origin
役に立つ・やくにたつ・to be helpful
ありとあらゆる・every conceivable; every single; every possible; all kinds of
→ context: ありとあらゆる悪口
Wow, egg-laying algae is not at all what I would have expected the prologue to be about! Not even a little bit! Have you met any 鹿 yet? Deer are really the main reason I’m interested in this series.
Me neither, really. XD
Not yet, but I read like… apparently around 3, maybe 4 pages of a physical copy? Not that much. Going by search function, I should meet one in the next chapter I’ll start tomorrow, so, soon.
—Double Story Combo—
Read (and listened to) today’s and yesterday’s folktales, and both were about a boy and a monk. The second one (仏さまに失礼) has pictures too, and amusing readings as usual:「（（馬鹿者！））」.
Don’t think I’ve seen this word before: 檀家 (だんか）= parishioner.

I couldn’t read yesterday, finally. I would actually like to use this opportunity to my advantage, to interiorize that even if it won’t be that sweet 100% completion, the challenge keeps going and there’s still a very wide range of benefits to reap from it. I need to embrace “failure” more often in my life, so I hope this is a good opportunity to work on getting rid of the toxic perfectionist mentality, while still keeping the healthy one of pushing oneself in a realistic and wholesome way.
