Another season, more challenges ahead. I’ll start off by finishing off what I had planned to read all along, then add accordingly. Typically focus on reading manga or books for this challenge, but I might also mention additional readings in my posts. I also track everything on my bookmeter account.

The author’s writing style is very relaxing. He really likes to use less-common kanji for everyday words. For example,喰う instead of 食う, and 訊く instead of 聞く… and so on. Though the material is autobiographical, he uses whimsical story-book expressions that really paint a picture. It feels so good to be back!
Today's Words/Phrases
馴染み = familiarity, friendship, intimacy
伝う = to walk/travel along
食い下がる = to refuse to give up, to keep after (someone), to doggedly oppose
向きになる = to take something seriously (joke/teasing), to get irritated (usually over something trivial), to get worked up
まくし立てる = to talk on and on, to rattle on
サジを投げる = to give up (hopeless), to throw in the towel
woohoo! excited for another challenge to start I’m another one that really enjoyed the supportive atmosphere of the last one and found the ‘read every day, it doesn’t matter how much’ approach really nice, especially as a fairly novice reader in Japanese. read a little bit of harry potter on my lunch break today so marking the first day as done but will be trying to read more later so may do a separate update.
goals
read something every day
keep up with book clubs
Around mid October will mark 1 year since I started learning Japanese! I’ve decided that it would be nice to finish reading my first novel by then, so my main goal is to finish either NO.6 or ハリーポッターと賢者の石! I’m way closer to the end of NO.6 but harry potter is way easier so not sure which is more likely tbh. Stretch goal would be to manage both!

Return of the random wikipedia articles! Now in POST-FORMAT.
For now at least, I do wish to start a book/manga at some point but I don’t really think my reading is good enough yet as it takes me forever to dissect a sentence.
It brings me shame to admit that I did not recognise 香川県, I burnt that word months ago… resurrection time! (Sorry 香川県, I didn’t mean to forget about you).
Thankfully all the other stuff I didn’t recognise here isn’t on WK. A mass unburning on my first day wouldn’t have been a promising sign.
Been meaning to start getting involved in the community here! Seems like a great place to jump in.
I am still quite beginner at all this so I am going to start with some Graded Readers and go from there!
Continuing where I left the last thread, by reading another chapter in Yotsuba volume 15. Things are starting to feel more familar as I go along. This was the 100th chapter I read of Yotsuba and it’s a favorite of mine. Let’s go picking up some rocks!
During the last challenge I read 10 manga volumes, albeit rather easy ones . I wonder how much I will manage to read this time. My bookmeter is still not updated thus I just linked to my Natively account.
In the break month I kept on going with my One Piece challenge - there’s 4 more volumes left to read by tomorrow early evening ish or so. I think I’ll start posting about my daily readings after that.
I have a bad habit of picking up books way above my level and getting burnt out easily so I’m going to be taking the Beginner’s Book Club current pick at the snail’s pace of half a page a day (thanks full time job ) with the hope of being able to read faster and more confidently by the end of it!
I’m going to use this as an opportunity to develop the habit. Thank you very much for organizing this. I’m going to start simply by doing “any amount” of reading on the Todai app, and begin the Crystal Hunters manga this weekend. Much appreciated @windupbird!
I read the second volume of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle today. I read Tsubasa in French a long time ago and it feels really good to be able to read it in Japanese now!
Hello, I’m going to join in for this session! I’m a long way into my Japanese reading journey (though there is still a long way to go, too), but I like doing check-in-type stuff with people, both for motivation and community, and I’m also thinking I’ll piggyback on this motivation to do a tiny little bit of very assisted Mandarin reading every day. I’ll mention what I read for that in my update posts, but the bulk of the post will still be checking in for Japanese reading, so I hope it’s okay to put them together. As a beginner to Mandarin reading, I can use all the motivation I can get.
I cleared out an unused post of my study log thread for my home post. I’ll be updating the calendar below, with the hope of switching the push pins for triumphant emoji if I check off every day in a week. I have to do both Japanese and Mandarin in order to check a day off, so it’ll take some effort.

(I have absolutely zero investment in one or the other being more correct or anything, but I find it interesting that I think I’m the only one here starting the calendar weeks on Sundays?)
For Japanese, I’m planning to mention the thing I read and then qualify that reading with a bit, some, or a lot. I’ll aim for a bit being <10 minutes, some being 10-30 minutes, and a lot being >30 minutes. However, I’ve found that keeping close track of time spent reading demotivates me, so it’s all フィーリングで. I do most of my Japanese reading at night, so I’ll update on the following day.
Here is my 読んでる page on bookmeter, and I’m using the beginner category on Mandarin Bean for Mandarin. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone reads!
I found this just in time, guess that means it’s fate, right? I’ve been meaning to get back into reading more consistently so here goes nothing!
I’m gonna live up to my avatar and attempt reading 風が強く吹いている for the… who knows how many times it’s been by now honestly. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it whenever I’ve tried reading it in the past, just never gotten very far! It’s slow going for sure, but whatever motivates you yeah? I absolutely loved the anime, and the idea of being able to read the novel is just so appealing. It’s one of the things that first motivated me to start learning Japanese actually Hopefully I can make it farther than ever before!

(and now that I’ve made this post I actually have to read some huh… off I go )
Weirdly enough, sticking by force(and frustration) to a book on a higher level than me helped me oddly enough. But that easility could have been a waste of my time.
Day 1: September 1st
Satori Reader: Secret, episode 30.
Final Fantasy XIV
始まりました!I’ve resumed the series I was reading on Satori Reader when the summer challenge ended. Only two weeks have passed since I read the previous chapter, so it’s easy to resume.
Also, some of you probably already knew from the previous challenge that I play Final Fantasy XIV and that playing it in Japanese was very daunting at first, so I never really tried to play it for longer periods of time. Well, I’ve been playing almost entirely in Japanese for a week, and it got much much easier than I was expecting. Of course, I’m still in the weird spot of knowing a lot but also not knowing another lot, but it’s great because many times I can guess what’s going on or have a quick search. So I will definitely be adding that to the challenge this time. But since I don’t want to become complacent with it (it’s easy to just put it there and call it a day, even if I didn’t do much in-game), I’ve decided that if that was all I did that day, I will only count it towards the challenge if I had actual practice and/or added words to the SRS. I will try to add those words or some of them to the posts so that it keeps me accountable for it. But if I did anything else like Satori Reader, I’ll just put it there too (which will most likely be everyday xD). But honestly it’s still pretty hard to follow in Japanese, if anything I hope it’s good practice. It helps A LOT that I’ve already played for a very long time in English.
