I used to read every day, but reading’s not really part of my daily study routine now. So I’ll try and pick up the habit again (:

Yay a new thread! ^^ Hopefully I will be able to read more this time around.

My goal is to read 君の名は next year, so this year I want to focus on just reading more and continuing to build up more vocabulary/grammar knowledge. For this reason, I will be mostly using Satori Reader to for reading in stead of manga for now!

I joined the last challenge very late (because of JLPT preparations) and then decided to break the rules again by combining the streak from the two challenges to make the goal 100 days total.
I’m trying not to start anything new now and concentrate on finishing things.

Why I'm Reading

In the “short term” I want to pass the JLPT 2 next summer! For long term, I’ll be moving to the UK for a few years and I want to not only retain the Japanese I’ve learned so far, but continue to cultivate it so I’ll be better then ever when returning to Japan :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Challenge Tips
  • Write down character names on a bookmark/post-it at the front of the book.
  • Keep track of words on my digital dictionary
  • Physically write down words that appear frequently, and try to memorize them
  • Reading everyone’s progress and posting here is the most fun part :two_hearts:

Ok I’m in. Just started reading それいけズッコケ三人組 which seems pretty achievable so far, both in terms of grammar (N4/N3) and thankfully short chapters, so I’m trying to read one per day.

The articles I read are left to the mercy of おまかせ表示 on wikipedia, or whatever the daily story is on hukumusume - really useful website! - or I just read an article on something that’s sprung to mind… or whatever cute manga has been suggested… honestly it’s all over the place.

Update : I started school on Sept 13th and work on Sept 27th and at some point I put WK on vacation mode because I was too busy and I was studying Japanese both at school and at work anyway. ^^ I completely failed the challenge but hopefully I’ll get used to my new routine soon and complete the next challenge!!

Alright, now that that’s out of the way, first things first. Thank you @windupbird so much for setting up the new thread!

I personally loved the summer challenge and the feeling of companionship that it fostered; coming back to a thread full of lively people working on whatever they are doing everyday was really nice and a decisive boost to my own success. And I agree, I love the part that there are no “goals”, the goal is just reading a little bit (or a little much) everyday. Yes, I know that is a goal in itself !

@ekg it’s good seeing you here! You sure don’t want to give it a try? :stuck_out_tongue: It can be as little as one or two paragraphs, or a single manga page a day :eyes:

Home post

Sept 1st starting early on 大海原と大海原 (1), the ABBC starts it on the 11th but I’m hoping that if I get ahead now it will take longer before I inevitably fall behind…

I wrote out the first (prologue) chapter in a Google doc but only got through translating ~ 3 real pages.

I found the title of this manga very cute 大海原と大海原 with the reading おおうなばらとわだのはら (わだのはら being the name of a character).

I spent a bunch of time trying to wrap my head around a structure noun+しなくても大丈夫だよ, still not quite there yet. I have the intended meaning guessed from the parts and the context, but something about the grammar isn’t clicking for me yet.

I read half of chapter 2 in 深夜特急 vol1.
The author’s writing style is very relaxing. He really likes to use less-common kanji for everyday words. For example,喰う instead of 食う, and 訊く instead of 聞く… and so on. Though the material is autobiographical, he uses whimsical story-book expressions that really paint a picture. It feels so good to be back!

Today's Words/Phrases
  • 馴染なじみ = familiarity, friendship, intimacy
  • 伝つたう = to walk/travel along
  • 食くい下さがる = to refuse to give up, to keep after (someone), to doggedly oppose
  • 向むきになる = to take something seriously (joke/teasing), to get irritated (usually over something trivial), to get worked up

woohoo! excited for another challenge to start :slight_smile: I’m another one that really enjoyed the supportive atmosphere of the last one and found the ‘read every day, it doesn’t matter how much’ approach really nice, especially as a fairly novice reader in Japanese. read a little bit of harry potter on my lunch break today so marking the first day as done but will be trying to read more later so may do a separate update.

goals

  • read something every day
  • keep up with book clubs
  • Around mid October will mark 1 year since I started learning Japanese! I’ve decided that it would be nice to finish reading my first novel by then, so my main goal is to finish either NO.6 or ハリーポッターと賢者の石! I’m way closer to the end of NO.6 but harry potter is way easier so not sure which is more likely tbh. Stretch goal would be to manage both!

For now at least, I do wish to start a book/manga at some point but I don’t really think my reading is good enough yet as it takes me forever to dissect a sentence.

It brings me shame to admit that I did not recognise 香川県, I burnt that word months ago… resurrection time! (Sorry 香川県, I didn’t mean to forget about you).

Thankfully all the other stuff I didn’t recognise here isn’t on WK. A mass unburning on my first day wouldn’t have been a promising sign.

総延長 = 3.248km - that’s a tiny road.

Been meaning to start getting involved in the community here! Seems like a great place to jump in.

Main Post

Continuing where I left the last thread, by reading another chapter in Yotsuba volume 15. Things are starting to feel more familar as I go along. This was the 100th chapter I read of Yotsuba and it’s a favorite of mine. Let’s go picking up some rocks!
