Radical pages that don’t contain mnemonics

For kanji that are also radicals, if the kanji was taught before the radical, many of such radical’s pages don’t contain the mnemonic that was used to first teach it.

So, if during reviews I run into a radical whose meaning/mnemonic I can’t remember (trying to piece together the meaning of a kanji), when I klick on the radical all I see is “this radical is the same as the kanji”, which doesn’t help me to recall the mnemonic. So I have to exit the review session and look up the radical separately again.

So, it would be great if in such cases the mnemonic is also written in the radical’s page.

I have noticed this as well. The worse part is that it’s inconsistent too. Level 11’s Older Brother radical does state the mnemonic but others don’t.

Totally agree with this and others as well have raised this issue…to no avail :frowning: so don’t hold your breath

As for:

what I do, when I know I’ll probably come across this issue, e.g., doing SSQ, is open a new tab on WK and click on SEARCH. So whenever I need to look up something I simply go to the other tab, do my search and return to my SSQ session. Not ideal, but WAY better than exiting your review seesion!

+1 for this. It would be nice to see the mnemonic again especially if it has been a while since studying the kanji.

Sometimes the mods or people in charge of adding these aren’t as online and might not see feedback unless someone directly @Mods . Even still, the best way to send feedback is at the contact button at the bottom of the dashboard, and fill out the form. You can also use hello@wanikani.com to send feedback directly. Hopefully with enough traction or feedback sent to the email, this could be changed to include the original mnemonic for the kanji when reintroduced as a radical.

Hey there, appreciate the tag! This is something we’ve been working on and are looking into ways to improve. Thanks for the feedback — we’ll pass it along.
