Preferred reading set up on iPad

There was a time when I read Japanese books and manga on my old iPad, and the only option was full screen. I’d have my phone to the side for looking up words in the dictionary.

Then I got a new iPad a few years ago and I was able to use split screen mode. I loved this new option - and would usually read with Book Walker on one half of the screen, and Shirabe jisho open on the other side of the screen.

Recent iOS updates brought new options. I’ve generally been reading with Book Walker taking up 3/4 of the screen, and Shirabe jisho just on the right hand quarter of the screen for look ups.

This week I’ve been playing with using Book Walker in full screen mode, and having the dictionary in “slide over” mode. This means I can have the dictionary hovering on the right or left side of the screen, or make it disappear off the side of the screen and pull it back into view when I need it.

I wondered what other people’s preferred set up was for reading in Japanese on a tablet, and whether there are any other good iPad options that I haven’t discovered yet.

The reason I like my iPad for reading manga is that the screen dimensions match the dimensions of physical manga nearly perfectly. It varies by model, but most iPads are pretty close, unlike Android tablets that have a ton of wasted screen space because the tablet is too wide. But this is only true if reading full screen. So for that reason I always have the manga full screen and use the slide over option for my dictionary app.
