Potential improvements for keen learners

Hey team I’ve been using wanikani for a few months now and absolutely love it. Already i find myself being able to dechyper meaning from things like street signs, restuarant menus and anime subtitles. I do think there are a couple of features that could significantly improve what a learner gets out of this website.

  1. Context sentences: These are fun to try and work your way through to test your knowledge however the answer to the sentence is visible directly underneath it. It would be cool to try and figure it out and then have a show answers button to really test understanding. I also think that when this button is pressed the hirigana pronounciation should pop up above the kanji characters to see if you get the correct readings.
  2. Test vocab in context: Maybe even some context sentences should be unlocked using exclusively the kanji you already know. This could be an optional study that unlocks after each level is completed and would be similar to the structure of the normal reviews section. I find brute force learning kanji without being able to practice then in contex is not very satisfying.
  3. Adjustable lesson amounts per day: I found the first few levels pretty dry and really wanted to boost through them quickly. I was running out of reviews and lessons very quickly. Maybe there could be an option to increase the number of lessons unlocked per day to 20? Wanakani could do this by looking at the amount of upcoming reviews you have to see if you can handle it!

Let me know what you think!

The daily lesson limit can be overridden I believe, but for the first few levels you’ll run out of lessons pretty quickly anyway due to the level structure. In general I wouldn’t advise beginners to overdo it with lessons though simply because, thanks to SRS, increasing the lesson load is not just a punctual thing but will actually increase the review load for weeks and months.

I think your other propositions are good though. I also think they will never be implemented. Prove me wrong, WaniKani…
