👣 This Week's Guide
  • Head to the right to leave ニビシティ and enter 3番道路
  • From 3番道路 you’ll end up at 4番道路 where there’s a Pokémon centre. Inside there’s a guy that will sell you a magikarp if you like! How nice
  • Head into the cave on the right to enter お月見山 and have a look around for several battles and items. Eventually you’ll run into a guy who will make you choose a special fossil, choose wisely!
  • Exit お月見山 to reach 4番道路 east side. Keep in mind you won’t be able to return to お月見山 and co for a bit once you jump over the ledge to ハナダシティ
  • For Pokemon yellow/Let’s go players, if you visit the house to the left of the Pokemon centre the lady will give you a bulbasaur if your pikachu/eevee likes you!
  • You can fight the gym now or come back to it later - note this can be a very difficult gym so if you’re doing a nuzlocke make sure you’re ready
📓 Pokemon Tips and Tricks
  • STAB moves: when a move type matches the type of a Pokemon, it will do 50% extra damage
  • Status conditions: Inflicting status conditions like sleep give you a greater chance to catch a pokemon
  • Weak Pokemon: If you want to level up a weak Pokemon in a high level area, you can send it out first in a battle then immediately switch to another Pokemon to share the EXP with both
  • HM moves: These moves are necessary for game progression but are worse than most moves and cannot be deleted once learned. It can be a good idea to have a pokemon on your team dedicated to carrying as many of these moves as possible
  • Losing Battles: Note that when you lose a battle you also lose half your money

🔥 Nuzlocke Rules

An optional challenge for Pokemon games to shake them up a bit is to do a nuzlocke challenge which basically involves only catching one pokemon in each area. If you’re interested in trying it out you can make a little “home post”/list for a running count of who you’ve got from each area and to keep track of duplicates if you’re using that rule.

Core Rules

  1. If a Pokemon faints you cannot use it again. (Box or release it)
  2. You must catch the first Pokemon you find in a new area. If it flees or faints you cannot catch another in that area
  3. You must nickname all pokemon you get

Optional Rules

  1. If you already own the first Pokemon you encounter in a new area, you can catch the next instead to prevent duplicates
  2. If you encounter a shiny, you can catch it no matter what, and it doesn’t count towards that area’s catch

There are many other optional rules but these are the basics from Nuzlocke university

:red_exclamation_mark: Note: If you’re playing Let’s Go it’s a little different for 2 reasons: wild Pokemon walk around in the overworld so there’s no random encounters, and you level pokemon up by catching them. Therefore if you want to Nuzlocke Lets Go you can do the following:

  1. Catch the Pokemon closest to you in a new area, or run around with your eyes closed and catch the first one you bump into
  2. You’re allowed to catch extras to level up, but they must be immediately released

Adventure Log
  • Battled the Bulbasaur on route 3 and almost lost my spearow, but bellsprout prevailed

  • Spent ages in the grass on route 3 catching nothing but ratatas waiting for something different to appear. During this my kakuna evolved! Welcome silly bee

  • I was hoping for a jigglypuff but an ekans appeared instead

  • None of the Pokémon available in the futurte on route 4 appealed much so I decided to buy the guy’s Magikarp

  • The second I stepped inside mt moon a geodude floated at my face, i guess he was really excited to join the team much to my disappointment because I wanted that clefairy

  • Took a billion years to get through mt moon but eventually made it out

  • Got a Bulbasaur from the woman in cerulean

  • Decided to challenge the gym immediately thinking my Eevee could one man it, but turns out no. On this day we lost Spearow, Ekans, and the brand new Bulbasaur. Rip :skull:

Time for more adventure and my challenge..

One shiny Pokemon per gym badge!

Week 3

Leaving ニビシティ I met the first コーチトレーナー. These trainers don’t know the power of shiny hunters  The experience point gain for catching is quite broken in this game

Inside the お月見山 Pokemon Center I bought コイキング.

Lead the way コイキング  I went back to buy Poke Balls to start my challenge.

I caught one Pokemon…

Ten pokemon…

Fifty Pokemon..

Until this different looking サンド appeared  after a chain of 96 catches. It was quite fast and relaxing. I hope my luck continues.

As I’m leveling up and gaining new moves I learned that the move Swift is called スピードスター Speed Star in Japanese. Now the animation makes sense

In お月見山 Team Rocket appears…and quickly blasts off again

ピカチュウ is enjoying our arrival in ハナダシティ. Let’s check out some houses!

Um… Is the landlord OK with this?

But no entering this house. Not even a コラッタ will get past the officer. Looks like we have more to do in ハナダシティ next week.

Impressive stuff! Never tried to chain for so long and not sure I would have succeeded, nice job!

Week 3

I have arrived in ハナダシティ and explored everywhere except the gym! I will be destroyed if I try to face the gym now, so I will definitely be waiting before challenging it… On my way, I caught a ニドラン:male_sign: on Rt. 3 and an オニスズメ on Rt. 4. Sadly, I knocked out the イシツブテ I encountered in お月見山 in one hit, so no catch there. Otherwise I didn’t have much trouble getting through the mountain, thanks to my new ニドラン. He had already gained 11 levels and evolved by the time I left the tunnels!

Oh also, out of curiosity, which fossil did everyone choose? I went with the こうらのカセキ.

Adventure Log 3

This week I had so many critical hits land against my team that I had to work my way through お月見山 three times to reach the end.

It might not have helped that my team was composed of:

  1. 001 タジロ, a real champ again wild イシツブテ with つるのムチ and はっぱカッター, but these moves weren’t so effective against all the ズバット.

  2. 016 ザシメ was useless against the イシツブテ, but did slightly okay with against ズバット.

  3. 052 Chris just wasn’t having it.

  1. 074 ゾボロク joined the team this week and was also useless.

I haven’t explored ハナダシティ yet, but here’s my team for when I get to the gym:

This week's hidden items.

If you’ve reached ハナダシティ and healed at the PokeCen, you won’t be able to go back to these items until later in the game.

3番道路

GBA-only:

This one’s “visible” by the dark spot in the grass. This won’t always be the case for hidden items, but often is.

4番道路 (west)

GBA-only:

お月見山

4番道路 (east)

GBA only:

ボイスチェッカー spots.

If you’re playing FireRed or LeafGreen, you can pre-obtain some ボイスチェッカー quotes:

Like with タケシ, you’ll get quotes by checking the sign outside the gym and speaking with カスミ. Speak with the swimmer in the gym for another quote.

3週目レポート

Version: Red Fire + Leaf Green
Goal: Complete Pokedex (150)
Pokedex, Caught / Seen:
Week 1: 10/10
Week 2: 15/18
Week 3: 33/40

Had Green Leaf give me (Red Fire) their ニドラン♀, サンド and 2 moon stones, thank you very much! They didn’t mind trading for a level 3 ポッポ, super generous of them.
I am taking advantage of the box system to keep my Pokemon ordered:

  • Box 1, need to level up to evolve
  • Box 2, need something else to evolve
  • Box 3, max evolution, don’t need them anymore (can give them away to GL)
Then I just rotate my team to keep everyone leveled up more or less at the same time (this stops when a Pokemon reaches its last evolution, then it moves to box 3 and I never see it again. So long ニドラン male and female, it was nice seeing you grow to level 16!).
My lowest level is 10 and highest is 21 (Pupuce).

Notable names of Pokemon:
フシギソウ is a nice upgrade for フシギダネ
プリン is a fun one, especially after having just played FFIV with プリンプリンセス
ピーピ, curious to know where this one comes from
イシツブテ is the best for teaching to distinguish シ and ツ

Also learned that たんぱん = 短パン = shorts.

Pokedex week 3:

Boxes week 3:
(lost the picture of my Box 1 at week 3, you’ll have to wait for the one for week 4)

Maybe not the most interesting answer from me, I’m playing both versions so I took both :x

Your Pokédex is looking good :0

I just want to borrow your illustrations to make it complete :stuck_out_tongue:
Super fun to watch it grow in any case!

Bulbasaur and nidoran evolved, now they’re ugly :smiling_face_with_tear:

はなび the charmander has joined the team

I’ve explored most of Cerulean City, the only thing left is the gym

Lost my first attempt at the gym. I was about to win but then starmie’s scald burned ivysaur :upside_down_face: I went out exp grinding and caught a psyduck, named it かずみ after Misty.

Week 3

Got through the tunnel, beat the gym, ez. Leech seed is actually pretty OP lol.

フェア evolved!

I’ll make a list of kanji I looked up.

奥 おく
怪 あやしい
抜 ぬく
珍 めずらしい

I’m happy to be playing this as part of a club because the primitive combat system gets on my nerves after a while and the weekly break between segments is very welcome.

W3

I’m being challenged by a trainer called ミニスカート. I wonder what’s her origin story.

I forgot I didn’t heal after last week’s grueling gym fight. Good thing Miniskirt-san is a noob.

Wow they didn’t hold back on trainers on this route.

Oh there are several ミニスカート. It must be a clan.

My ヒトカゲ evolved into o リザード. The name is less cool, but it’s a bigger dragon so I’ll take it. I didn’t expect that it would evolve already. Is it possible to block the evolution and keep the original form? I want to keep my pikachu small and fat.

We’re going into a cave. That’s a Final Fantasy 4 reference.

I like the palette:

My Cocoon evolved into a wasp. It’s pretty cool, although I was hoping for a mantis. The sprite is pretty badass though:

Oh the combat sprite is gigantic for some reason, it’s bigger than my リザード:

Unfortunately it still only knows the defence up move, so not very useful.

The encounter rate is absolutely insane in this cave… It’s also very big which makes it hard to navigate on the small GameBoy screen, there aren’t many landmarks to orient oneself.

I took the shell fossil. Seems more interesting than a seashell.

That cave was a surprising difficulty spike, much more complex than I expected, especially given how straightforward everything was so far.

I went looking for the shop in the new town and accidentally triggered a fight against my rival.

My Pikachu did short work of the water pokemons in the gym:

Current team:

I have a full roster now. I guess I’ll get rid of Nidorina when I find something better, it’s just not cool enough at this point. I want one of those starfish pokemon Kasumi used!

POKOOLMON

Name Evaluation Is it cool?
アーボ It’s a lilac snake :cross_mark:
リザード It’s a bigger dragon :white_check_mark:
プリン It looks a bit like Kirby :cross_mark:
ズバット It’s a blue bat :white_check_mark:
ピッピ It looks insane but it’s cute, a big pink fluffy thing :white_check_mark:
コイル It’s a weird machine with a bunch of magnets on it :white_check_mark:
ビリリダマ It’s an angry pokeball? :cross_mark:
ナゾノクサ It’s a weird turnip :white_check_mark:
マダツボミ It’s a goofy flower :cross_mark:
パラス It’s a goofy crab :cross_mark:
ラッタ It’s a huge, mean-looking rat :white_check_mark:
ベトベター It’s a slime monster :cross_mark:
ドガース It’s a sort of happy poison bomb :white_check_mark:
タッツー It’s a seahorse :white_check_mark:
シェルダー It’s a scallop :cross_mark:
トサキント It’s a goldfish :cross_mark:
ピジョン It’ s a pigeon :cross_mark:
ケーシィ It’s a yellow reptile thing :cross_mark:
ニドリーナ It’s a blue boar-looking creature :cross_mark:
ヒトデマン It’s a starfish with a big jewel in the middle. It’s very Sailor Moon. :white_check_mark:
スターミー It’s an even bigger Sailor Moon starfish :white_check_mark:

Yes, you can press B when the animation starts and then it stops. It will try again to evolve at the next level though, so that can be a bit annoying. (this is fixed in later versions, Pokemon can holds items, one such item is a stone that blocks evolutions)

Now imaging playing in a car, with no reliable source of light and occasional tunnels… Life was tough back then.

Which, coincidentally, is mentioned on a sign this week in the GB versions.

Praise be to the neighborhood street lights!

Oh I think I even read that sign but forgot in the meantime. It was in last week’s town, right?

Nice found, I was wondering if it was mentioned in The Manual but didn’t see it there (and also didn’t find the Japanese version :frowning: )

On GB, it’s in ハナダシティ. (Not certain where on Fire/Leaf and Let’s Go.)

Gotta read more manga.

Skipping to the next day:

Adventure Log 4

This ヤドラン seems to be specifically placed…

The evolution sign from GB has been replaced with a sign about holding items:

カスミ sounds a little more childish that I was expecting. Quite different from her anime counterpart.

And with that this badge, 052 Chris will listen in battle again.

To round out this week, I went ahead and battled Pokémon’s best rival.

We had a nice 4v4 match-up.

ボイスチェッカー ゲット

My team at the end of this week:

Additional hidden item.

Ooooh week 3, got another dancer and got the nickname backlog started!

Gotta catch 'em all!

When heading east of the first gym I didn’t remember there being so many trainers crowded together, there was like 7 or 8, I just want to get to the grass and see what I can catch lol

And there I caught ポップスタ the プリン! I bet it knows how to dance, it can already sing, and it even gets so absorbed that it forgets people are witnessing its performance! (or not)

Also caught some Pokemon for capturing sake, even if I won’t use them this run I just like seeing them and I can use them for the Stadium games (can you guess which Pokemon are which based on the nicknames I gave them?)

I’m starting to remember some of the quality of life things I miss in the remakes though, like being able to see all your Pokemon in the box organized better with pictures, being able to view what exactly a move does (It tells you absolutely nothing, it’s a good thing I know the first two games well) and most of all, being able to reuse those TM Machine CD’s whenever you want to teach Pokemon moves, they deplete in this version and it’s such a bummer, I remember building a team for Stadium and wanting to teach thunder or something to more than one Pokemon and thinking “Do you really have to play through the entire game again just for that” but I guess it’s like that for trading or having two copies of the game, at that point you’re probably already doing things like pick up both fossils while you’re at it

In my head this is the “hard” version of Pokemon but I don’t actually know if that’s true or not or if it’s just quality of life stuff lol

プリン knowing only sing and some of the matchups with my スピアー felt really slow and idk how good these Pokemon actually are, but we’re not about that rn. Knowing how long Mt. Moon is and what Pokemon show up, I was going to mostly use my water starter, and while I did, my other Pokemon exceeded my expectations and did great, the starter is level 20 and the other two are 13 and 10

Finally, some name explanations to work on, 4 evolution lines are at the point we can now wrap them up!

バタフリー: Butterfly+free

スピアー: Oh oh this one’s one of my favorites! Having spear hands of course, but! Try reading the kana backwards, if you do, you’ll get apis, latin for bee, so they’re known as the genus apis!

コラッタ/ラッタ: now we got the evolution, which doesn’t change a lot, rat that ain’t so small anymore

イワーク: rock+snake

Nickname backlog (Includes Pokemon yet to evolve!)

The Pokemon listed are ones we already encountered at some point (although may be slightly different depending on which what version pairs with what), the starters we’ll get to eventually, plus the following (some of them we already explained their earlier forms and may have yet to evolve, others might include the entire evolution line and may be better to explain the whole line at once): ポッポ、 オニスズメ、 ピカチュ、アーボ、サンド、ニドラン、ピッピ、プリン、ズバット、ナゾノクサ、マンキ、タダツボミ、パラス、コイル、ビリリダマ、ベトベター、ドガース、イシツブテ、magikarp (oof sorry sorry I forgot its JP name)
