🔴 Pokemon Gen1 (Game Club) - Week 2

I always disliked this type of nonsense, although I suppose that there’s this “collaborative multiplayer” element to Pokemon so I guess I can allow it here. I can imagine kids sharing the location of secret items during recess.

At least the game does provide an item to help find these, although I’d argue that after several iterations, they never quite got it right.

Caught a bulbasaur, named him Bob. Boxed my eevee cause it makes the game way too easy. ボブ and クッキー the nidoran took care of the gym. Still need to check out the museum.

Or you just go to the kiosk and grab one of those

Good Japanese practice in RF/LG; you can choose a sentence that defines you by talking to an NPC. You can pick the sentence by choosing 4 words, they are sorted by categories. Also good practice for the あいうえお sorting.
Here are a list of “しゅみ”:

(hesitating between アイドル and おかし)

And here is a list of “くりかえし”"

Let's put this to the (Pokemon Guide: American Version) test.

No hidden items :frowning:

Week 2

Caught a bellsprout on route 2, named it Miriam (bellsprout → professor sprout → Miriam Margolyes)

Imagine my delight when I come right out the gate and theres a pikachu standing there, woohoo

Much to my disappointment that tiny little strip of grass right before Pewter City is still route 2, so no new pokemon there

Grinded for a bit outside the city but got bored and decided to go for it. Good thing I have bellsprout

I forgot gary (I mean green) was in this version (?) of the game. He popped out after doing the gym. I ended up calling my rival Gary though so I guess they can both be Gary

Nuzlocke Details

Me when I have to actually read the big words instead of just handing the Gameboy to my brother:

BTW if you’re playing lgpe and are looking for rare spawns, chaining any pokemon will increase their chance of appearing. I got bored and chained caterpies in Viridian Forest, seeing if I couldn’t find a shiny, and I saw four bulbasaurs in ~five minutes.

Week 2

Bulbasaur sweeeeeep. I caught a Bulbasaur name フェイ in the forest and she dominated the gym. I’m still planning on doing a mostly Alola team, but the sixth and final Alola Pokemon may not be joining my party seeing as you get them at literally the end of the game. Bulbasaur is cute too.

I have been so busy that I only rushed the gym and barely read anything. But I made the goal and hope to visit the museum on the next week. Thankfully this was a sort play.

Week 2

As a reminder, I’m playing with a randomizer that replaces and palette swaps all pokemon.

The bug catchers had some interesting pokemon. One actually had a low-level Rayquaza, but my Steamdeck doesn’t want to upload that photo…

Also in the forest, I caught a Grimer and a Teddiursa. I was glad to find some lower stage pokemon that could still evolve and wouldn’t take all my poke balls.

Pewter Gym was poison-themed. I only got these two screenshots but I remember there also being a Golbat and some others. I didn’t have anything super-effective against poison, but Spheal mostly swept them. I tried to use the lower level mons a bit to spread the exp around, but it always came back to Spheal.

This is my party at the end of week 2:

I forget if it’s been mentioned already, but in a battle, it might be a good idea to press select on your moves screen and see what happens!

Now I got 2 Pokemon and 2 legs and I'm ready to boogie

Meet ビート the ビードル, I was wondering what nickname to give em, and then I realized sometimes the best nicknames are the most straightforward, fits in with the dance theming too!

I’m starting to realize there’s gonna be a lot of name explanations backlogged as new Pokemon come along that still have yet to evolve. For example, bug Pokemon evolve quickly, so if we do name trivia/explanations for those one’s entire evolution lines, it’s kinda whatever, but Pokemon that take longer to evolve feels like a reward and are kinda unexpected and encountered later, so I prefer what we’ve already been doing with the later explanations. But we’re gonna need to keep track sooner or later, so maybe I’ll get a list started next week!

ooh I like your team, I’m a fan of all those Pokemon

Although primarily playing Leaf Green, I’m also speeding my way through Pocket Monsters Red, Blue, and Yellow (mostly at club pace) on a couple of 3DS’s, as I’m working on getting everything I want to have GB stamped before Bank goes away early next year.

Yellow Progress

I’m an hour and a half into Yellow, and I feel like at least half an hour has been slow level grinding while still unable to touch タケシ’s Pokemon. I spent about ten minutes trying to level up a ニドラン♂ enough that it can battle on its own, only to encounter a wild one two levels higher (so I caught that one to raise instead).

For those unaware, Pokemon Yellow has a few changes to make タケシ’s gym easier when Pikachu is completely useless against the rock/ground types:

  • タケシ’s Pokemon are each two levels lower, with イシツブテ (Geodude) lacking まるくなる (Defense Curl), and イワーク (Onyx) having しめつける (Bind) as an additional move.
  • The ニドラン duo learn にどげり (Double Kick) at level 12 rather than 43 as in the other games.
  • マンキー was added to Route 22 and had けたぐり (Low Kick) added to its move pool, at level 9.

These are Fighting type moves, which are super effective against Rock type Pokemon.

After typing all that, I went back to level grinding the ニドラン:male_sign: until it reached level 12…only to realize I was using Nidoran:female_sign:. Well, no harm there. It learned the move.

From there, it was off to battle タケシ and erase two prior humiliating defeats (that totally don’t count). Funny thing is, I had done well against him on the first attempt, did some level grinding, then barely did anything to him on the second attempt.

This time around, タケシ’s team didn’t know what hit them.

I don’t think I ever noticed before that the PokeCen has the space beside プリン (Jigglypuff) filled in on Yellow. Seen compared with Blue:

I like the palettes that’s pretty cool

Week 3 time!

Loving to see all the different versions. Definitely very nostalgic seeing this one!

I was on vacation last week (very relaxing!), and I played but didn’t get a chance to post. Also, apparently I never went back to post my ‘part 2’ update on Week 1. Whoops. Anyway, before I get started on Week 3, here’s a brief update:

Week 2

Current Time: 05:16 (Did I spend a lot of time grinding? Yes, yes I did.)
Start ‘Date’: August 14, 12:00AM
Current ‘Date’: (1hr play time = 5 days in game time) September 9, 8:00AM
Current Team:
Cello - L16 リザード
Pear - L12 ポッポ
Nimh - L12 コラッタ
Cano - L12 バタフリー
Kee - L12 スピアー

I caught Cano on Rt 2 as a キャタピー and Kee in トキワの森 as a コクーン. I knew the first gym would be hard with my team, and I also wanted my bugs to be fully evolved before moving on, so I spent a long time grinding - got everyone to L12 except for Cello, who I raised to L14 (the max my rules would allow before facing the gym). Even with that, I still had a rough time! But luckily, I was able to win without losing anyone. And Cello gained two levels and evolved in the course of the fight - yay!

Now on to Week 3!
