🎙 Podcast Club [Now Listening: 日本語 with あこ - Nihongo Picnic Podcast]

iirc, text rather than [text](url) will open link a in new tab.

Otherwise, it’s always possible to right click (hold touch) a link to choose to open in a new tab.

My understanding of the problem (and I’m just passing through complaints I’ve recieved);

 1. The touch target for the check boxes is too small
 2. Also long titles wrap around to the next line, so it’s surrounded on three sides by links.
 3. If you try to tap the checkbox, you have a high chance of tapping the link and being taken off the page (even if it opened in a new tab, I think most mobile browser focus the new tab, so this doesn’t fix the problem).

Instead what the users do for non link polls is tap the text of the option which will also toggle the checkbox. But if all the text is a link, then that option is removed.

Sounds good to me.

Sounds very good to me with 10 weeks fixed! Gives time to adjust to it, to ramp it up if it’s hard, and to see if we like it.

Hard to say. I think one hour is the max it should be. So maybe ramp up period with 30 minutes the first weeks and see if people agree to push a bit more as it goes?

I would split the episodes and hit the mark, in your example that would be episode 1 + part 1 of episode 2.

Also I found it hard to vote for only 2 picks, but as we have only 6 nominations I guess it’s fair enough!

In general I agree but if 4989 wins I would be so grateful if you would run the first one  as I’m feeling too swamped to set up a decent format. I will participate!

Agree! Since we’re not sure how everyone will settle in let’s be a bit conservative at first

From the votes it looks like there is an appetite for early intermediate plus level content so that’s interesting to consider for future nominations!

I already listen to 4989 American Life and so I’ve voted for it, but I’d be equally happy to go with a shorter, more beginner-listening level podcast. If we start beginner-listener friendly, we can grow the group from the ground up.

Don’t forget to add your vote back since it was deleted when you edited the poll by the way

:drum::drum::drum: Aaaaand the results are in! Our first podcast will be 4989 American Life with a whopping voting percentage of 66%! Our highest percentage ever!!! Because its the first vote

I’ve set up the home thread and added a few points underneath. Since we don’t need to order anything for this club I figured the start date wouldn’t matter too much but if people want it pushed back lemme know (Set to start on Monday currently)

@mitrac Since its your pick if you want to take over at any point after the first week just to copy my format for ease that’s completely fine! And if not that’s fine too I can keep running it

I love the home thread, I’m so glad you set it up instead of me :ribbon: if you don’t mind running it that would be amazing, I’m definitely participating. I nominated Doraemon to the ABBC a year ago and now it’s finally gone and won, so it’s looking like I’m up for leading that

@rumade let me know in case you are interested in making the nomination posts, otherwise I’ll get around it in a couple of days!

The original Nihongo con Teppei podcast for intermediate learners, discussing different random topics every episode.

Format/Episode Length: 11 minutes
Genre: Daily life
Difficulty: N3 At least that’s what a text analyser said

Personal Opinion

I really enjoy the beginner podcast, and this one may be the next step up from that along with the longer episodes so there’s more time to talk about each topic. He’s nice to listen to and explains things well.

Pros and Cons

Pros

 • Step up from beginner podcast
 • Spotify transcripts available (though AI generated)
 • 700 episodes
 • There is a sequel podcast (N4/3)

Cons

 • Can be a little uninteresting
 • Talks alone
 • Slightly limited availability (I think something happened to the storage of the original episodes so they were all re-uploaded as “original archives” to spotify and hs website)

I did not steal my descriptions from Akashelia :eyes:

日本語の会話のPodcast

Summary

It’s a dialogue style podcast, where our narrator’s Yamamu and Kibi cover a broad range of topics (mainly involving Japanese culture/lifestyle) of different levels.

Website: https://kotonohanihongo510.wixsite.com/my-site (It’s currently offline though)
Format/Episode Length: Usually 20-30 min
Genre: Lifestyle
Difficulty: Varied
Transcript availability: I think yes, at least on Spotify I am able to see it

Personal Opinion

They speak slowly, but also at a natural level. The topics of conversation vary, but are mostly about lifestyle and culture, so easy to follow. It’s also a dialogue style podcast, which I think has some advantages (and disadvantages) compared to monologues - mainly that you can learn about natural conversations, 相槌, etc. But for me, what I really appreciate is that they have different levels of content, and label the episodes based on the estimate difficulty, so it’s accessible to a broader public.

Pros and Cons

Pros

 • Varied level of content
 • A lot of later content is divided into estimated level (N1-N5), so it’s easy to narrow episodes for your level

Cons

 • May be difficult to determine what to listen with the club, as the level of episodes can vary a lot

Saw it recommended on this post and has a positive review on Tofugu . Listened to a few episodes, he talks quite slowly (well anyone does when you’ve been listening to 4989 for a few weeks x) )

Pros

 • Episodes have different JLPT levels, level is on the title
 • Transcripts

Cons

 • Can be a bit boring for advanced learners
