Being set back to apprentice just because you had a bad day and mixed up the same vocabulary several times during a single review might seem justified to some people, but for me it seems rather uncalled for and very demotivating.
There are several reasons, why people aren’t equally good at Wanikani. Some people already have a very busy schedule and for some, English is not their native language. Some lose focus more easily then others, especially when they’re frustrated. Please consider making the srs penalties slightly customizable (like allowing people to set a limit of downgrades per review for example).
I heard that there are apps that already implement something like that, but i wouldn’t want to do my reviews on a phone or a tablet. I prefer using my workstation and being able to type on my keyboard.
You might want to look into userscript-double-check-version-2x. I personally do not use it but I see a lot of people using it with success, so this might assist you as well.
I unfortunately do not agree this has to be there by default, my reasoning is as follows. It is a bit strict, but it forces me to actually know the item. Getting confused due to Kanji that are similar, or thinking of the wrong vocabulary form is an important part of recognition. Guru represents that you can remember a Kanji for about a week. If you get it wrong 2 times in a row this is not the case. I have noticed it benefits me more to just have it in apprentice immediately instead of having to encounter the item a week later and then downgrade it again. I would like to add that I have an 80% success rate in my reviews, but mistakes makes learning
Lastly I wouldn’t oppose the change because customizable is always nice, but wanted to share how I feel about the current system and why I think it assists me in the long run.
Thanks a lot for the info! I have used tampermonkey before and I’ll take it into consideration. It’s not exactly what I’m looking for, but it might help. However, being able to correct your wrong answers seems a bit too tempting to me.
I can very well understand your point and I can imagine that many people are happy with the srs penalties the way they are. That’s why I only asked for it to be customizable for people like me, but not set by default.
