Osbm's Study Log

Hello everyone,

About me, I am currently a 4th year university student from Turkey. The name is Osman. The username is osbm (almost everywhere). I use Arch linux (btw) with japanese input (fcitx5/mosc) to take notes on obsidian. And i use the android app Smouldering Durtles to finish up some reviews in subway. And i use parantheses inside sentences a bit too much, a bad habit of mine (forgive me). Otherwise I am pretty average. Nothing wrong with that obviously.

I started wanikani about a year ago. And currently only on level 9. I am a slow learner :frowning: . This is most probably because of my procrastination. And also because of the fact that i have nothing else to support my japanese learning journey.

On the other hand i cannot afford to spend too much time on this journey because of my school and job. Baby steps everyday for me .

I am increadibly weak at listening and grammar. I need to be working on those too.

My plan

  • I am going to continue at wanikani at full speed.
  • Start doing at least one duolingo lesson per day and one unit per week. Currently at Section 2 Unit 22 (I hope this doesnt become too hard.)
  • Read this awesome grammar book
  • And also I started reading Horimiya (my first japanese read) but its grammar is a bit too hard for me. (I selected this manga because i saw people read it in the book club here. Hope old threads help answer some newbie questions of mine)

I couldnt find anything for the listening part everything is too hard for me for now. I listen to japanese hit music playlist from time to time. But i dont think i gain anything from it other than some familiarity. I dont know.

My short term Goals

  • Be level 20
  • Be n3 certified
  • reduce the number of days per level
  • have fun

I opened this study log hoping to meet some cool people along the way.
Lets see how this goes.

Day two update. 2024-09-24 is about to end.

  • I have finished up all my available lessons. Tomorrow I will hopefully upgrade some kanji to Guru to unlock the remaining of the level 9 vocabulary.
  • Horimiya is wild. How come hori did not recognize her classmate in a different clothing. I cant stop myself from reading.
  • Finished 3.2 from the grammar book but i dont feel like i can remember these. I didnt need this much SRS for learning english tho  (someone help me)

Good night everyone.

Just wanted to say that 面倒を見る is “to look after someone” or “to care for someone”.

Just 面倒を would be saying that there’s a verb after 面倒, which could be causing trouble, too.

Plus, 学校帰り is “returning from school, going home from school”, like the verb 帰ります explains.

放課後, for example, is just “after school” in general.

If you have trouble reading certain text, you can always post it here.

you have no idea how helpful this is. thank you so much. google translate is not really helpful when it comes to the meanings of vocabs. i really needed a good system and i started searching then i found jisho today. many of my translations made so much more sense. in the future if still cant figure out some translation i will ask it here.

cheers

Not sure if you’re aware, but the Absolute Beginners Book Club here read the first volume of Horimiya a year ago!

The weekly threads have a lot of grammar discussion, so they’re helpful to read.

What the hell. I found a excel sheet with more than 70 THOUSAND vocab listed. Such a dedication. This excel is literally a life saver. AND weekly discussion posts are really informative to read. I knew that they read it but i did not know they went to this extend to document their notes. This is super awesome.

I should also log my study so far.

I did all my reviews, lessons and duolingo but I could not read the manga today or yesterday. But wait i have excuses. This week my university started and i started using a wildly different keyboard that i’ve built named Corne. I made so many mistypes and clicked enter by mistake (enter is pressed by my right thumb, and space is on the left thumb) I spent at least 90 minutes on wanikani. I am about to cry. I did get very better but i am still very slow compared to my old style. Hopefully i will get to my near peak speed in about a month or so. Maybe even faster after that.

in retrospect, i shouldnt have used wanikani to practice my typing. I at least added 2 days to my level :frowning:

Hello, last couple of days was busy too much i was only able to do wanikani and duolingo and today i advanced 2 pages in horimiya. But i was able to get back on track. I suspect that i will take 12-14 days for this level(10) but i am not sure.

I also want to mention small happy moment. I was watching jojo and they said この勝負 at some point and it made me soo happy that i got that without the help of subtitles.

hello everyone,

Learning a third language is very hard but it is worth it. I am doing my reviews and reading Horimiya (very slowly) but i literally feel myself getting better at this. :sunglasses: I also learned that what i was doing studying late nights before sleeping is called Revenge Sleep Procrastination.

I dont have anything interesting to show now. :sob:
Good nights

Hello world.

Reviews are going a bit roughly recently and i also started to listen Japanese Podcasts from youtube in the background when i workout and commute (god awful 3 hour long commute for university). I dont know how much it helps comparing to listening japanese pop music but i get really happy when i catch some phrases and words.

I think that i will get to the level 60 in about 3 years with this pace. I want to learn faster. I dont mean just finishing the kanji and getting to the next level. I need to absorb the vocabulary as well. For that i may need to visit wanikani more often throughout the day.

Things are looking good. Thanks for reading.

holy shit a three hour commute. hopefully that’s 1.5 hours each way right, that’s much more bearable… i had a roughly 1 hour one-way commute for years and that sucked. Well, I still have it technically, but now only two times a week… you can get a lot of reading done on it though which is nice

yes, it is 1.5 hours each way, but there is an upside to this which actually makes it lovely. Approximately 15 minute of this 1.5 hour is crossing the Bosphorus Strait with a ferry. The time of day where i can just forget and watch the view. I love it.

Hello everyone,

6th day of level 11.

I forgot to update here :skull: :skull:. I changed my phone language to japanese. I had actually done this once before but it was way too unusable to i had to change back. now I can understand more which is awesome but there are two problems:

  1. there are not any furigana (i wonder if there is a setting/tool for this)
  2. i cant understand many of the katakana words. I may have wrongly assumed every katakana word comes from english thus i should be able to understand them. This is mostly the case but not always. I wonder what is the percentage.

I am getting better at recognizing sounds and kanjis but i also want to have an japanese output. I am planning to start a blog. This may be a little too big of a leap for my current progress. But i need to start somewhere. Well i guess i can write in this forum. I will give it a try.

My goal is to one day being able to write these entries in entirely japanese.

Good night everyone. i love you.
