Option to disable burning items

Yeah, the “Study burned items” is just not practical at this point.

Not sure if random or shuffle would fix it. IMHO something more aking of how likely the item would be to be forgotten so how long ago the last review was without being very strict about the timeing like during regular reviews… “Catch up with your burn items” and one would see items that were last reviewed more than 6-12 months ago becuase right now seeing items that I burned just yesterday is utterly pointless.

Well, this thread is in the exact category so I think it’s a good fit

Going over older topics (Just noticed “Unread” tab, with all “tracking” topics xD :man_facepalming: :D) and found this gem:

If someone is long at WK, and I’m doing very slow 5 lessons a day and I’m already “burning” items - even though I’m not at the level I would be somewhat capable of reading (I’d say around levels ~13-15?) I’m already in a stage where I would loose all the subtle nudges for the burned items…

Again: optional and with long delay periods woud be awesome <3

+1. Submitted a feedback about the same topic via email last week.

I think you could just generate the list of words then review them one year ahead. Maybe that WK stats side and just go down the list. Or you could get more value out of your time and review another set of SRS cards. This place teaches some 6000 words, so I think you’d still be missing some because the average Japanese apparently knows from about 10,000 to even 30,000 or even 50,000 for college educated Japanese.

Well. I could do a lot of things

The idea is to simply (OPTIONALLY) remove the artificial limitation of WK, which shouldn’t be that problematic.

Why do you assume I’m not doing just that and I’m limiting myself only to WK?

[citation_needed] ?

I mean - what’s “average”? What level? I’d say it would be somewhat similar around the globle. Mind you - I’m not aiming at C2 in Japanese. I’m currently preparing for C2 in English and the textbook has lovely vocab like “obstetrician”, “lackadaisical” or “smitten”. So while they are valid voabulary and probably fit into “50k most used ones” I’m not sure one uses those on a daily basis

We should just have a notice at the top of the forums. [Do not suggest or request improvements]

Wasn’t there just an update that was done to the flashcard based on suggestions?

Back when I started last year, I also asked around and looked into optional settings and customization. I was also surprised by how much pushback there was for any kind of optional settings. Basically the point people made repeatedly to me is that any kind of option is “too tempting” for them to use. So they prefer that it just doesn’t exist :man_shrugging:t3:.

The context for my issue was an option for an undo button for typos, but apparently even if it was hidden in the deepest depths of the settings menu, people who don’t want to use it would still be too tempted to go find it, knowing it’s there, so it’s best that no one has the option :joy:.

So I think any suggestion that has to do with the SRS system, it’s intervals, manipulating review times, retrying answers, and so on is just met with this “I don’t want to do that, it doesn’t affect me, and I don’t want to be tempted to do it, so leave it” kind of attitude, which I too think is annoying😅.

Admittedly, because of this response from people, I essentially adopted the mindset of “yeah, it would be nice to have that setting and I have nothing against it, but just make due with what there is now and move on, because in the long run it won’t really matter.” :man_shrugging:t3: Which sometimes gets confused for me also saying that I want no options.

I would say average is the state of someone completing high school. Which isn’t a very high level. I think lackadaisical and smitten are both common words. So I think they’d be the top 10k used words.

Apparently lackadaisical 16809th rank and is a collegiate word, so I guess if you graduate college you can be reasonably expected to know it? Its also the name of an animation project?

Smitten is 6326th rank and apparently is Elementary or Middle School?

That said, I wish you all the best in your English studies, it’s a great language, even though I both love it and dislike it.

You are right, I should not have made assumptions. I am a real person.

I think it would be a good idea, though it doesn’t affect the majority of users. The goal is for people to learn enough kanji and vocab to get able to just read and for reading to be the maintenance for burned items. So I think if the change affected more than 50 people itd be worth the time.

So, as with everything: “it depends” and everyone has different goals

For me something on the level (or slightly above) secondary school would be more than enough, just to be able more or less freely “typical content” (online, newspapers; with occasional crutches of ad-hoc diccionary)

Thanks, I have completely the same sentiment towards it  it has awesome flexibility but the spelling and pronounciation is just annoying

I think that in my case the perspective may be important – I’m native Polish speaker, I have ~C2 english level, somewhere around B2/C1 in Spanish (which I have to improve a lot more as I’m living in Spain now so that is my priority) and Japanese on top of that is more like a “hobby” and eternal “itch to scratch” (because since forever I was fascineted with language, country and it’s culture). I was doing WK before and got burned around level 13. Now I’m doing it very slowly (5 new items per day), with the expected finishing in ~5 years. While I can recognise quite a lot of kanji and vocabulary right now, from what I gathered (and saw frequency statistics) I plan to start actually reading (graded readings) when I finish level 10, which should be solid base. The thing is - I already burned ~300 items (and I would say in many cases I wasn’t 100% but it was more of a lucky guess/feeling) so in my case having this extended SRS system would jus be very helpful for retention purposes without actually overwhealming me. I get that I’m probably an oddball here and most people are 100% focused and commited to learning Japanese and “eternal SRS” may be a bad thing for them but for me it would be really helpful
