You also get a notification if a post or thread is linked
^that’s a link, not a quote, so you should get a link notification… I think
edit: strange, that should embed as a quote

I don’t think there was a difference in my notifications, since it just counted as a reply to my post. 
It didn’t illustrate your point, sadly 
The icon should be different in the notifications tray. An @ symbol if you are mentioned, an arrow if someone replies to you, citation marks if someone quotes you, and a chain if your post is linked

With the last one I only replied, so that is right. However, it might be that you only get the reply notification if you both reply and do one of the others
