Okay, what am I missing?

I’m doing a lesson. WK has asked me for a kanji reading, but I don’t know the on’yomi version as WK has not told me this yet.

WK won’t let me advance, the eye icon for seeing the information is greyed out, I can’t put in nonsense and get the answer wrong, I can’t skip the answer or move forwards. WK is insisting I enter the answer for a question it has not yet provided the answer for.

I could go outside WK for the answer but that seems a bizarre way of using a teaching app’.

What am I missing?

But did it provide the kun’yomi version?
Or are you saying you never had lesson for this kanji and now you are asked for it as a review?

I’ve never seen the explanation. I didn’t knwo the answer as I was never given it. It weas for person and I answered, ひと, but it asked for the on-yomi reading, and I had no idea what that was.

The weird thing for me is that there was no way to bypass this screen. The keyboard shortcuts don’t work,. I can’t add a nonsense answer and get it wrong, I can’t skip the screen. I’m literally stuck in this loop with the slide repeatedly asking me for an answer I could not give.

In the end I had to cheat, search for it online then enter the answer in WK, at which point it told me it was correct, which now messes up the SRS part of it because it now classes it as a correct answer when in fact I didn’t know the answer. And then, on giving the correct answer it told me all the details about the correct answer.

It’s such a bizarre approach. Hopefully it’s just a bug or user error on my part.

So, you are saying you never had the lesson for 人 kanji on WK and yet got it in reviews?
If so, this has to be a bug. Normally WK only gives reviews for items you’ve had lessons.

The standard procedure is – you get a kanji lesson, where you get taught the meaning and the reading – and then, in your reviews, you get a review for meaning for that kanji and review for reading for that kanji.

Also, you are saying it wouldn’t accept some random kana like わからない as a wrong answer?

I’ve had the explanation about the word so, “enter” is the next one I have an issue with. It hasn’t told me what the kanji reading is for enter so I don’t know it, but I can’t progress. The interface is insisting on a correct answer or no progression.

Even if I’m being stupid and it has given me the answer, but I just can’t recall it, there should be an option to say I don’t know. Otherwise, the system is breaking it’s own purpose. The only way forwards for me each time is to cheat, at which point the SRS system is thinking I got the answer correct.

Yeah, it won’t accept random kanji, spamming the keyboard, hitting enter repeatedly.

Okay, I refreshed it, then it gave me the meaning on tabs across the top, which I hadn’t seen. However, this still doesn’t solve the problem that if I don’t know the answer I cannot progress and still have to cheat.

Ok, so in other words, you had lessons for 人 and 入、but only saw the meanings there, not readings, right?
If that’s the case, maybe, you didn’t scroll the screen down to see the reading explanation?

Also, what exactly did you enter as the wrong input? Were you using built-in WK IME or were you using your own IME.
Because if you’ve entered actual kanji as an input, WK might not accept it. Nor would it accept if you enter some mixture of kana and latin, like べtsレ
The input has to be all-kana, like こたえ or ほ

Yeah, it’s not the problem with entering information. I could enter hito no problem and it would tell me it was looking for the on’yomi version.

I didn’t explain myself very well with my last post.

On refreshing it started me with the meaning of the kanji for enter with an explanation of the readings, which is what I missed. However, the main issue still remains that when going into the quiz, if I then can’t remember the answer, there is no way to enter a wrong answer. It will only accept the correct answer and if you don’t know it you have to cheat to move forwards.

What happens if you enter the wrong answer?

So, this is my screen. Everything is greyed out. I don’t know the answer so I can’t move forwards. It is happening on every instance where it asks me for the kanji reading.

Try entering ほ
It is the wrong answer, but I want to see what happens when you enter it

What should happen – is that the answer would be highlighted red and the item info button would stop being grey and you’d be able to click it

Yeah, that worked. Made the field go red and offered up the correct answer.

We looped back round to person and I entered hito again as I had before and it flagged it as red. Maybe it doesn’t like my Japanese keyboard.

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, it’s best to use the built-in WK IME when entering reading

Anyway, I hope this wouldn’t spoile your experience with WaniKani. It is a great app and I really hope you’d like it here and stay with us!

In any case, best of luck with your studies! wricat

Yeah, I’m enjoying it. It would be nice if I could remove the mnemonics. Is there a way to hide them?
