I should add, that 角川つばさ文庫 have a kid’s edition of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time which has might be helpful. As far as I know, the only difference is that it has furigana for all kanji, which I know some people frown upon, but in my view is definitely useful language learning scaffolding to make use of while learning to read.

Difficulty wise, they rate it which probably doesn’t mean much, but also isn’t really unexpected, I guess? Anyway, as usual with such things, what I’d do is to look for ebook versions and try the sample pages and see how you find it difficulty-wise, as a) you’ll have a good idea if it’s around your level and b) if you know it’s above your level and you make the decision to get it anyway, you’re not going to be unpleasantly surprised.
I’ve already read the first volume but a re-read is probably helpful since there are many things I didn’t get the first time around, and I see the comments in the thread are very useful. I added myself to the list, hopefully I didn’t break anything.

I think, sadly, I’m gonna have to drop out of this ;; I’m just too much of a beginner at this point, and the time I’d spend trying to figure out what the grammar even is, find an explanation, and understand how it all works together to mean something would be better spend studying actual grammar points ;o; (I also think that even if I tried to stick with it, I’ll fall horribly behind the group).
I’ll still hold onto Yotsubato & hopefully attempt it when I’ve got a better handle on things in the future ;o; gl y’all

I must admit that I am struggling too. You wouldn’t believe how much of my free time has been taken up with よつばと！this week. If you don’t have that kind of time, I can see how it might be worth coming back to it later.
Or… it is a beginners’ book club, so I am sure beginner questions are more than welcome. You could read along as best as you are able (missing whole chunks of understanding like I do) and ask questions where you think it might be useful to you.
Haha it’s just the struggle of not really understanding… anything. I’d be asking questions about nearly every sentence, and while I would learn, I think it wouldn’t be as fun as it should be to keep me motivated. Thank you though! Best of luck to you too.
For me, there’s at least one thing in almost every sentence that makes me raise an eyebrow, but that’s just the nature of this kind of stuff. Transitioning from textbook sentences designed for learners, to actual Japanese book sentences designed for Japanese children, is a big jump. Just make sure you keep on top of your grammar and you’ll be powering through the pages in no time
Hi everyone! I am not planning to participate in this club, but I wanted to say thank you to the people who created this thread. I’ve had Yotsuba on my shelf for half a year, but I didn’t know if I was ready to read it so I was putting it away. And than I found this thread where you had put it into the begginer level and I considered myself intermediate, so I decided to give it a try.
And it worked out for me! I was enjoying it eversince, not much words that I have to look up and pictures help me a lot. I am already reading the 3rd volume and try to read a chapter per day. I don’t understand 100% of it but I understand the whole story and even get half of the jokes)
So, what I wanted to say: Thank you very very much! It was a great encouragement, that I needed so much!

I am not sure if you have discussed this already, but i am really wondering about yotsubas life before the moving as she seems to never have seen a swing before. Or maybe has she only been knowing more modern swings? Has her dad never introduced her to a playground?

It’s partially addressed later in the first book and comes up in bits and pieces as the series progresses. To say any more at this time might be construed as spoiling.
