NOUNじゃなかった vs NOUN PARTICLE じゃなかった

Wait, what? So people don’t frequently refer to each other as 貴様 on the street?

Ironically, there is actually a small group of first year boys at my school who have quite fun calling each other 貴様 on a regular basis. All in jest, of course.

Really? People don’t just have over reaction over the slightess thing and say nyan?

What about Dewa arimasen? I thought that was the top one in formality

You’re right, I was covering the ones that started with じゃ

I enjoy Jisho’s two very conflicting definitions for this:

  1. you; you bastard; you son of a bitch Sensitive, Derogatory
  2. you Archaism, Polite (teineigo)

Derogatorily polite!

Given the kanji it’s made of, it ought to be polite.

Ah, gotta love the way meanings shift over time.

If you think about it it makes sense. A bit like saying to a stuck up person “Of course your highness”.

Yeah, but that’s just sarcastic, not derogatory.

Sarcasm is just how it starts. It’s a slippery slope from there.
