Nicole needs a thread to herself -- A Study Log of sorts

Ah, I just hadn’t gotten around to announcing this in the threads  (basically because I didn’t really know where and how…)
I haven’t actively abandoned the series, it’s just that I read the first chapter and it somehow felt so uninspiring to me and you know, ten kilometers of descriptions of Moe’s colorful clothes  and then the long-winding descriptions of these objects… it just didn’t click with me, and so I decided after some weeks of internal debate that I should rather not read it now if I don’t really feel like it. I see that it seems to be interesting further down the line, and so I will probably come back at some point.
But no matter what, I will host the series anyways! :crossed_fingers:

Apologies, deleted, posted in wrong thread!

I was just about to comment on that

I haven’t done any long-term planning, no. There are still 14 volumes of Flesh&Blood that I’d like to read at some point, and then I have a gazillion other books and I would like to reduce the pile a bit. So the general strategy of reading well-written interesting books remains unchanged! Maybe I can even manage to fit in one or two Akutagawa prize winners, who knows.

I thought I’d pull you in here because I don’t see a thread where this really fits. Please forgive me, and if you’re not interested please walk away silently, I won’t blame you!

I think the hostage book is a lost cause by now. I had somehow expected this to happen when I called upon the other clubs, and I’m of course fine with that because the club should read the book that the majority favors, not that I personally favor
But I’m not planning to read a teenie romance, and I noticed you didn’t vote for it either. Sooo

Ha-ahem there is this sale on Bookwalker right now, and the books were already pretty cheap to start with, and so … erm … well … ahem … we could start whenever you feel like :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

What do you think?

Oh you meant it! :joy: (I sort of realized)
I’m interested (as if I wouldn’t be), but are you clear on what kind of book it’s going to be? Because I keep reading reviews and I’m still not sure.

No, I’m not clear at all. You said the reviews say it’s not a romance and not a light novel, and that’s 90% already  and that it’s dark, so I want to see what that means. (I might drop it if it gets too scary, though :woman_shrugging:)
I usually don’t read reviews as much when I get a clear recommendation from somebody, and this guy was really determined about the book. Also, I think it should be read in the order Age22 → Age32 and the Age22 book is only 200 pages (not much more than the ご飯 book) so we could read that in a week or two and see whether we like it.

What still worries me is the cover, and whether it’s targeted at younger audiences. But reviews like this (from Amazon) set my mind at ease, I think:
正直に言うと、あまり読みやすいとは言えない本でした。
なんだか硬くて、エンタメというより、純文学のような感じです。
就職に失敗した青年の人生を描いています。
読みにくいのに、読み終わると、妙に登場人物のことが気になりました。なんとも言えない後味です。
気楽に小説を読みたい人は避けたほうがよいと思います。

If I understand correctly, the mystery element appears in the second volume, and the first volume shouldn’t be judged on its own. It’s all a bit strange.

What are the books you’re discussing? I think I saw them today when browsing Bookwalker but now can’t find the, again!

Erm, the author is an idol, whatever that means…

His biography sounds pretty impressive

I guess it means that he’s cute and knows how to play that, and all the girls fall for him?

Let’s see…

Hmmm…

Thanks, I’ve been shopping! Can’t guarantee to read at your pace but am interested to try!

Here’s another review about expecting it to be for a younger audience and being surprised:

こう来たか!まさかの展開はアッパレです。ぢの若い人向け小説かと思って舐めてかかってたけど、ミステリでもありラヴストーリーでもあり、ノワールノベルでもあり。他の著作も早速読んでみよう。相変わらずエグいシーン有るなぁ。あまり得意では無いけれど、物語の進行上しょうがない?

All reviewers seem to agree it’s a good story, and many are surprised it’s written by an “idol” and stress it’s well written.

I’m up for it if you are?

OMG that’s French

Ready when you are

I’ll make a discussion thread for it and see if anybody else is interested in joining. Then we can clarify the details in there.

Nicole, you’re a genius, coming up with the idea of combining the beloved study tools, box tables and SKM series :star_struck: I’m itching to do the same!

I would love an opinion from you on all the different skms after you used them a bit. The grammar one is good, I used the reading one once and it was okay, but I’d love to hear about the rest.

I just finished the first subsection and I felt the urge to tick a box somewhere  I simply had no choice…
(and I guess I was lucky that this voice in my head did not tell me to sacrifice a virgin to celebrate this )

Will do! So far I like the vocab book (it groups the words thematically which hopefully makes it a little bit easier to remember them) and after I learned the first bunch I already encountered 3 or 4 of them in my reading  so no matter whether I‘ll pass or not, it was already a win
The chapter titles are promising as well - looking forward to the onomatopoeia chapter
And the kanji book has some chapters called „similar shape“ or „similar reading“ that already make me tremble with fear :flushed:
