Not quite what you wanted, but this bookmarklet will toggle it on and off - I have it dragged to the bookmark toolbar in Firefox: (edit: forums software breaks javascript: links)
Setting it up manually:
Create a new bookmark on your bookmark toolbar called “Toggle NHK Furigana” and then copy and paste the code below into the address.
The latest 4 articles batch was literally all about the コロナウイルス, which is sad news but allows us to see certain non-WK vocab that appears regularly such as
消毒 (しょうどく) - disinfection
うつる - to be infected
専門家 (せんもんか) - specialist
Learned all of them just by seeing them enough times (it also helps that the Kanji parts make sense every once in a while).
TangoRisto は、is there a way to turn off the furigana? Been hesitant to use it because i couldn´t find a turn-off button.
I have finished rewriting my vocabulary sheet generator for these articles, although I’m not sure it’s actually very useful! Here is some sample output on the recent ＩＯＣ会長「東京オリンピックの準備を一生懸命している」.
For anyone interested, the new program is written around the python port of a tokeniser called “sudachi” - it is a bit challenging to get working on windows, but very easy to use afterwards.
Thanks to this thread, I read an article from NHK Easy News today ! I still rely a lot on Rikaikun for understanding what is going on, but it feels good to be able to recognize some vocab and kanji I am lerning with WK (like 役に立ちます or 以上)

買った - bought (past tense) とき - the time when の - connects the things directly before and after it まま - without change, the same as にしないで - don’t do
all together: don’t leave your password the same as when you bought it (the computer, I guess)
I know I am almost certainly too low a level to be reading this sort of stuff, but I wanted to ask a question:
What sort of level should I be before I give reading an article a go? Also, how far into Bunpro should I be as well?
Finally, what sort of stuff can someone like me actually try to read? I have only learned about 9 grammar points on Bunpro and I am currently finishing up the remaining 30 or so vocab for level 2 on WK. Thanks in advance. =D
The website is aimed at school children (who have more grammar knowledge than beginner Japanese learners) - but you could try just reading the headlines if a whole article is too much at this stage! You can use a plugin like Yomichan to help you with dictionary lookups.
It’ll probably feel more approachable when you know N5 grammar, and even more so when you’re comfortable with N4 grammar.
Probably level 0 or 1 graded readers, or sentences from your favourite textbook
At the beginning pretty much anything is hard because we need enough vocabulary and grammar knowledge to make sense of anything – but reading can help improve these, because you’ll be looking up words and grammar points.
