It’s an auto-awarded badge if you have X amount of engagement with the community, and get X amount of likes / replies.

Indeed - I’m guessing within your first month of signing up.

I briefly glanced at the forum after signing up, but then didn’t come back for a few months. Not that I would have been chatty enough to get the badge regardless of my interest in the forum back then.

Also, the non-Discourse forums didn’t do that, did they? Not that I would have received such a badge, but I assume it didn’t exist in 2016 when I arrived.

I joined Christmas Eve 2014, but then basically disappeared until I took a trip to Japan in December 2017

It was. We would have to set up a Lobby for Leebo thread, and @Leebo would need to be ready to reset to level 1 (again).

Also, I think that the New User of the Month needs to do things such as giving “likes”. I have never ever seen anyone so damned scroogey with likes:

But, Leebo is the most serious student ever here, and does deserve some bonus points for that. (really, we owe you a debt of gratitude for being so serious about your kanji studies. The fun and games is all great, but I come here to study too, and you are an inspiration.)

Nah, it’s just that everyone else likes things indiscriminately, clearly.

But seriously, I don’t really participate in most of the “social” forum things. So I think that accounts for the discrepancy.
