Getting slow in your old age, Leebo?

I have a job where I use Japanese every day now, so I don’t spend much time just studying, but I do try to expose myself to new stuff.
Yeah, I read an old post somewhere (I don’t remember what the thread was about) where Vanilla answered the topic question, and as he was typing, he noticed Leebo was typing too. It apparently showed his message at the top, but when he refreshed, somehow Leebo’s message ended up above his.
Not surprised, considering you live in Japan.
Hello everyone!
Just started my wanikani journey yesterday, loving it so far (even though my ADHD brain hates waiting, I can see how it actually helps ).
I’m very much a baby beginner, I’ve taught myself hiragana through tofugu’s workbook about 2 months ago and have also done the katakana one (not as good as that one but I’ll keep going back to it every now and then).
So far I only have 1 question… Why are some of my reviews/review forecasts at odd hours of the day, like 11pm and 1am? I will definitely be asleep at a lot of the review times haha. I’ve checked my timezones settings and they are correct.
Reviews follow a pattern based on how long it’s been since you completed the lesson or previous review. So yeah, if you do a bunch of lessons in the evening, they’ll come back in the middle of the night
Ahh right thank you! Makes sense now haha. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that to begin with.
Howdy all, been using WK for a bit, and I def enjoy it. Most of my dedicated time for study is when I’m on the bus to work or home.
I thus am using a touchscreen keyboard that auto-capitalizes for every new input. Since WK (and most IMEs, I’d guess) does capitals as katakana rather than hiragana, if I forget to tap the shift before typing, I get ウ instead of う, which results in more errors than I actually have. I’ve tried using a hiragana swipe keyboard with SwiftKey, but I find that amount of swiping starts to hurt my thumb much more than tapping. (I’m a computer programmer by day and I have some significant hand issues).
Does anyone have a recommendation for how to handle this? Kind of wish WK would do a spellcheck on mixed kana, but I know that could be hard to get right due to mixed syllabry sentences.
Thanks in advance, y’all!
Welcome to the forums!
I just turned off the auto capitalize feature on my touch screen because I’d rather just hit the shift key to purposely capitalize my words rather than have them interfere with my reviews.
Mm. Yeah, that’s what I was worried about - my phone’s my main work and personal communication device, and I do actually like the autocap for new sentences. Ah well, thanks for the response!
Is it possible to change the order of the items so for example put a Kanji from a later lection to my actual queue. this ist Problem: my Japanese Textbook introduced りょうり as 料理 which is far away from my actual lection in wanikani. Though I want to learn the writing in Kanji now. Is that possible?
There’s no way of changing the level ordering in WK, it’s a very rigid structure l, I’m afraid
Is this normal? I’ve been using wanikani this time for like 5 months and I still haven’t burned anything.
Yes, it’s normal The burn reviews appears after 6 months if you get them right each time. SRS stages from the FAQ
And welcome back! Seems like your last post was 12 years ago, ohoy
thanks! thats so helpful.
Unfortunately, it’s a known bug. SwiftKey ignores the ‘don’t capitalise’ annotation on the input field. The only real workaround would be to use a different keyboard, e.g., on Android, Gboard is not affected.
Hi, I’m only level 2 but I’d like to know if at some point “English to Japanese” exercises will come up, for example, where it says “construction” and you have to write 工.
There’s nothing like that in WaniKani. You should have experienced all the lesson and review types by where you are now.
I don’t know if it’s still being actively run, but there’s a thing called KaniWani, made by a user, that prompts with English and asks you to respond with Japanese.
KameSame also has this option and also can sync with your WK account.
Just wanted to say hello. I recently started and today was my first lesson doing actual vocabulary - my brain is already melting! Is it quite common to feel a bit overwhelmed at this point? Learning the initial kanji was fine, but suddenly I’m learning different readings and I just hope I can keep up!
Yes. Being at level 11, I can confirm it will continue just like that. Further, I expect it to continue to level 60 (and beyond)
