Needing to take a break for work and family stuff

Hello!

I have just reached level 17 and I have some family/work stuff that has to take priority. I love languages and study them as a hobby, but I have run into a snag a bit. My time is limited with a 3 year old and a new born and I speak French as a second language that I need to keep up. I have also been given the opportunity to learn Spanish for work and now need to continue my German studies as well.

Needless to say I have little time, I am reluctantly giving up wanikani for a period of my life where Iā€™ll have more time. I want to ask for some advice on how the best way to go about this would be?

Thanks!

Biggest tip: use Vacation Mode. In the menu on WaniKani, go Settings > Account, and Vacation Mode is in the box on the lower right.

Otherwise youā€™re gonna come back and find that every single item is waiting to be reviewed. Vacation Mode freezes the timer on everything.

I was in your situation, I started WK with a less than a year old and a two year old and I think thatā€™s what I liked with Wanikani, I found it very compatible with family life. Like I donā€™t have time to sit down 1 hour everyday and do a textbook, but I definitely have several times a day 5 minutes where I can do reviews on my phone (with the Android app Flaming Durtles). So I could continue to do Wanikani while being pretty busy with the family.
Now that the kids are bigger I do have time to sit down one hour everyday, it was long to wait to get to that stage, but thanks to WK, the wait was ā€œusedā€ and now I have a solid kanji knowledge and that makes all the rest easier
For the other languages, if itā€™s about maintaining them, I would suggest podcasts while you are out and about. And for studying, maybe get a teacher so you have a specific time where you can be out of the house / study online alone.

Yeah, Iā€™m thinking along similar lines to Akasheila.

Rather than take a break from studying Japanese, why not just cut back substantially? Even if you only do, say 10 reviews a day, thatā€™s still progress ā€“ not the progress you want, surely, but something is better than nothing, Iā€™d say.

Iā€™d like to add that if you donā€™t do any lessons the reviews tend to cut back very quickly. So it might be possible that instead of aiming to do all your lessons all the time or 15 lessons a day you aim for 15 lessons a week or 1 lesson a day or 5 lessons any time you have 5 minutes.

You could do what Iā€™ve been doing, and just put it on vacation mode every few days so the reviews donā€™t pile up. Life happens but doing what you can here and there is likely more beneficial than stopping entirely
