This is not the kind of image book I’m making (yet? there were definitely a lot of interesting vocabulary in 薬屋のひとりごと, should have maybe saved it)
This interaction was so funny!
But it does beg the question (that I don’t think is every actually resolved anywhere in the series). What is Nana’s job!?!?! For some reason I imagined her working in a bar or club or some such place.
I’m cackling
Huge shout out to your mom. I am laughing thinking about the result if I called my mom to ask her to look up something in a manga…
It’s the 2nd time in the series so far that people assume she’s prostituting herself. Not beating the allegations…
I actually assumed that she didn’t have a job at this point and was just living off her savings or something. Didn’t Ren pay for their previous flat? If so she may have had the opportunity to hoard a bit of cash.
I assumed that eventually she intended for her music to pay the bills, but of course we’re not there yet…
Haha yes she’s great. My very own 小松奈津美.
Don’t know what’s her job now, but she was shown to have a job at a library (or book store) before coming to the flat. But yep it is mentioned that she’s fine with Ren paying for the flat and that she that she can have more savings that way.
At some point didn’t she mention that she was doing one-off jobs? I feel like that was when ハチ was wondering why she still had money..
ngl, “one-off jobs” also fits this bill ![]()

Chapter 8
Pulling absolutely no punches from the get go.
What I love so much about this manga is that we all know what’s coming. This chapter is, in some ways, a filler chapter. But there’s so many great character moments that it doesn’t feel that way at all. In a way, it’s like the story is showing Hachi that even though she thinks this is going to be the end of the world for her, she really has a lot more going on than she gives herself credit for.
I have a lot of trouble outright hating Shoji, but he had very little upside to him ever, and this.
Sachiko on the other hand.. I do feel bad for her. I mean, she knew he had a girlfriend so she’s not fully innocent here, but as soon as it becomes real it’s over. I respect that somewhat.
I watched about 1/3 of the anime (but raw, back when my Japanese was incredibly bad) so my memory does go further than this, but after this volume it’s going to be close to a fresh story to me because my already murky recollections have almost no light in them anymore. I’m excited. On to vol 4~!
Chapter 8
I love how you put it, I agree! We even now WHEN it’s coming I think… 5月5日 I’m looking at you…
Also nice family pic:
The only thing I didn’t like in this chapter, is when Hachi expresses her doubts to Jun but Jun tells her she is probably imagining things. Ouch, I feel like this will be a double betrayal when Hachi finds out.
Vocab of note:
被告人 & 前科 (probably common vocab in 逆転裁判, I have yet to read it!)
しらばっくれる
モテ期
こき使う
トロイ
ミーハー
くどく(口説く)
二股掛ける
ほとぼりが冷める
なにげに
ドジ
付き纏う
陸でなし
Ooh very exciting!!

I would say it’s the opposite of a filler chapter! We get the conclusion (hopefully) of the Shouji arc. I’m ambivalent about Sachiko, I feel bad for her but also I don’t understand why she got herself into this situation to begin with.
Jun and Kyousuke briefly discuss about the possibility of Nana hurting herself if she found out but that last page still surprised me. That’s heavy stuff.
Also Shin is effectively a 15yo gigolo? Cool cool.
That surprised me too but I guess the aforementioned discussion convinced her that Nana shouldn’t be told the truth harshly over the phone. She also acknowledges that her behavior doesn’t make sense after she hangs up. I guess she panicked a bit and tried to temporize, which feels relatable to me…
Chapter 8
Agree is it pretty well explained and understandable. Also as I knew what was coming, I chuckled a bit in Volume 1 or 2 when Junko said something like “Shouji would never cheat, not the kind”. But one year away from Hachi, and then seeing this girl everyday, I guess as Kyousuke said, it’s not like he’s cheating on Hachi, he’s just completely in love with Sachiko. But now that Junko has done what she has done, I was just thinking that this will feel double as bad for Hachi probably when she finds out that she was the last to know.
Yeah… Took her a while to get over Asano-san(28) too, not looking forward to seeing how destroyed she will feel here… At least she has Nana now…
Speaking of having Nana, maybe Shouji should be more worried about Nana’s reaction than Hachi’s by the way, if she can walk on a table with her boots, imagine what else she can do…!
Did I finish volume 3 or did volume 3 finish me?
Summary
Going to start noting down how many times Hachi says something like “If only Nana were a man…”
I wonder how much pain they would save themselves if they knew or realised they could date women :3
I knew this was going to happen and was honestly expecting Shouji to cheat soon after moving to Tokyo, but man, the angst pang I got when I saw this huuuurts my heart for Hachi.
The last page was so painful to read, make it stop
but at the same time, my heart just blew up in size after how Nana immediately paid attention when Shouji said “we need to talk” siiiigh
well done!
Summary
Haha yes. Shin also got offended that he could have been with Nobuo. Nowadays, people get offended when you assume that they are straight just because they are married with someone from the opposite gender. Times change x)
LOL. Real.
Ch. 8 Thoughts
Like others said I am happy that things with Shouji are reaching a head and hopefully that whole arc will be over soon (I’ve been a hater since he first appeared lmfao!). But the complicated web of relationships and friendships is so realistic and painful. The dates with Hachi and Shouji where she is complaining about her new job and he is so distant…that hit me so hard. Yazawa captured the facial expressions so perfectly.
Sachiko is also such a complicated character. Though she’s not totally innocent, she’s definitely more innocent than Shouji in my eyes. Her experience of feeling unrequited love is so real.
I love Hachi’s continued shipping of Nana and Yasu.
I was kind of lost at how Hachi seemingly got a job overnight? I feel like she mentioned going to an agency or something to try and get a job and then the next day was already going there…? Or maybe I’m missing something.
Once she’s in the new office, though, the scene of Hachi obliviously talking on her cellphone while her manager follows her through the office is freaking hilarious ![]()
Onward to Volume 4!!!
I agree with your comments!

I presumed it was some random temp job she got through an agency. Not too surprising that she would start immediately I think?
replies
Wait, when did this happen? I vaguely remember, but I wanna look it up again. ![]()
Yeah and I love the meme that goes something like “I’m going to assume you’re gay unless you come out to me as straight” lol
Hifi on that.
I think I was a hater from the beginning because something kept telling me that he might betray or cheat Hachi. And honestly, I expected Hachi to just forgive him (out of desperation) and experience a lot of angst/hurt during that phrase, but glad none of that happened and that she has Nana for emotional support :')
