NANA―ナナ― Volume 2 👩‍🎤

reply

I liked that they also showed it for the real estate おじさん in a previous chapter too. Also in this chapter ナナ does it too, which I think is meant to be a bit mocking (although I suspect it’s a bit of meta-humour given that they certainly don’t actually mention the ages out loud while talking?)

There could be a cultural aspect to this, I currently live on the 5th floor (counting like Japanese/Americans do, where the ground floor is 1) although it’s more like a 6th floor because the building’s entrance is at the level of the basement due to the building being on a hill, and it’s an old building without elevator. I remember that the real-estate agent told us that no American would visit it because they’re used to having elevators everywhere and it’s a deal breaker for them.

Meanwhile for someone like me who’s lived in old Europeans buildings for most of my life, I see elevators in residential buildings as an almost extravagant luxury. A bit like AC really.

I agree with every you said there!

Another point of discussion: Sid Vicious

Nana mentions a few times Sid Vicious and says that it’s her type of men. And to the point of giving Ren a necklace with a lock like Nancy and Sid.
I don’t think I had noticed back when I read Nana for the first time, maybe because Internet wasn’t that main spread yet, but now if I lookup Sid Vicious, wow, I wouldn’t say that Ren is just inspired from Sid Vicious, it really just looks like Ren is a copy of Sid Vicious! Makes me wonder the drama-doom-like tone of the manga (Hachi is basically talking to Nana as if she is not here anymore at every start and end of every chapter) is also inspired by how Sid and Nancy died..

nevermind the bollocks

I have commented in previous weeks about how immature 奈々 is, but ナナ idolizing that moron is peak poser tryhard “not like the other girls” and it’s hard for me not judge her (and Ren) for it.

Oh wow, they were asshole junkies and died at 21. Sid probably killed her in some kind of drug-fueled rage daze. So beautiful. So aspirational. It’s not a phase, mum, it’s who I am!!

Meanwhile 奈々 seems to be handling her new Tokyo life like a proper adult, setting boundaries and all that. You go, girl!

@Akashelia got the grammar for you, but I did want to point out that in this case 意地を張る (or 意地張る) is a set phase so this 張る is more idiomatic than anything.

Sid & Nancy (& Ren & Nana)

And then also asking Ren if he would die with her if she died.. so.. suspicious? :face_with_peeking_eye:
Although, surprise we’ll almost surely never actually know bc Nana will probably never be finished :upside_down_face:

This also cracks me up every time!! It’s some of the meta humor that I love in this series.

Your legs must have been extremely powerful by the end of those two years  And you’re right it wasn’t soooo bad – day to day it was manageable. I just am scarred because they day we were moving out, our movers called and cancelled an hour before they were supposed to be there so my partner and I had to do everything ourselves at the last minute  Truly an unforgettable day in the worst way hahah.

Unfortunately I feel like this is true in the majority of American cities that aren’t New York (where I lived in many walk-ups of course…). Now I live in Boston, on the third floor of a building, and my parents still act like I’m asking them to run a marathon when they come up

Yeah this is true… Giving her the benefit of the doubt I feel like they’re really into the aesthetics of that whole era of punk without actually idolizing the lifestyle? Which doesn’t make it any better I guess if they’re just being shallow  Then again, the Sex Pistols themselves were an extremely shallow band designed on their image more than their music, so maybe it’s fitting!

I was so into punk music and culture when I was a teenager, and that’s part of the reason why I fell in love with Nana in the first place. I still do “Anarchy in the U.K.” at karaoke sometimes lmao but over time my tastes developed more into liking political bands like The Clash. Now that would be hilarious if Ren was modeled after Joe Strummer and was just a huge dork :joy:

I’ve never actually seen the Sid & Nancy movie, which I think is actually supposed to be quite good. Maybe I’ll have to watch that as an accompaniment to this story lol.

This makes so much sense – thank you so much!

Now that you mention it, I picked up running as a hobby right after I moved out, probably was my body telling me that it would be a pity to have all this leg work go to waste :joy: :exploding_head:

Ooof. Understandable!!

Haha I was wondering. Without an elevator I take it?! Crazy stuff.

Yes it seems to me that the similitude stops at the physical resemblance, in NANA they don’t do drugs (except the contraceptive pill) and they have a lot of focus on being good musicians :+1:

That’s cool that this manga could attract so many different people. I wasn’t at all into punk so for me it was more Hachi that was appealing, can see myself a lot in her!

Sorry, I’m kinda dumping all my thoughts from ch 1 here because I’ve been drafting this message for over two weeks and didn’t have enough time to finish it until now. I went through all the discussions, and it was fun reading your thoughts as usual!

ch 1

I can’t with her :sob: It’s so funny that she just dropped everything and booked the tickets. But it does make sense at the same time, 'cause she’s been hoping for this for such a long time, and her time to “catch up” with her friends is finally here!

Can’t think of any other perfect way for both of them to meet each other, I love it.

Not sure if I’m overthinking this, but ナナ’s visuals have gotten soooo much prettier than the first volume, especially the charm and energy that’s radiating in the pages. I feel like it’s ナナ from the perspective of 奈々 for some reason.

I love how both Nanas got along really well in the first meet. It’s so simple, but something about the art and the way it’s written makes me want to romanticise their encounter. Although, I would feel actual physical pain sitting next to a stranger and only hearing about their partner.

Also, their hands when they kanpai are drawn SO well I’m mesmerised!

ch 2

I was going to attach the same screenshot and talk about their relationship haha! I love your point (and also @Lisaveeta’s) on how ナナ interacts with 奈々! I loved the scene where even ナナ was pissed off when they were interrupted from the 章司 talk – fav panel from chapter 2!

I was wondering how 奈々 still hadn’t spiralled into the “Did he cheat, did he not cheat” doom, because it felt so characteristic of her, and here we finally have it. I also had a feeling that the minute these thoughts start forming, their relationship might change a bit, but I’m not too sure of that. I guess I’ll find out in a couple of pages (or chapters?).

ch 3

Damn, she knows how to grab an opportunity when she sees one. It’s interesting that she’s starting to do all of this on her own, and I’m so proud of baby 奈々 :")

Omg, girl didn’t even look back at 章司!! So interesting how her priorities have changed; and I guess this is also where we see their relationship dynamics shifting so clearly.

I’m halfway through chapter 4, so I want to finish it properly before jotting down any other thoughs!

Love reading everyone’s thoughts, doesn’t matter if it’s “late” everybody should feel welcome to read at their own pace and comment whenever! :+1:

Chapter 4

Was a bit funny that ナナ, who didn’t want to follow 蓮の花 to Tokyo to be a housewife to him just spent her entire day making food and taking care of the flat and stuff for ハチ :joy:
Also hilarious the conversation about the reading of 蓮, good thing that ノブ arrived at that point before ナナ decided that she didn’t want such a noisy dog after all x) (also I wondered how they translated that, maybe I need to ask my mom again to send me a picture of the page)
(I also ended up spoiling myself by looking ahead so I knew it would be ノブ at the door, too bad, the effect to make believe that it could be 蓮 was well made, I wonder what I would have thought if I didn’t already knew)

Shout out to @rumade who just moved to Tokyo and is facing exactly the same situation as Nanas :grimacing:

That コマ of them arguing about the reading of 蓮 should be displayed in WaniKani when you provide the wrong reading for a kanji.

ch4

Walking on the table with your boots on? Really? Absolutely vile.

I find it easier to read now that the chapters are not as exposition-heavy. The interactions between the two Nanas are very entertaining.

Is it the first time Nobu and 奈々 meet? I think so but we don’t see a proper introduction and they seem to immediately be on friendly terms so I wonder if I forgot something.

Definitely thought it was Ren before turning the page, especially since it happens just after the 蓮 tattoo discussion.

Yes! Nobu has just arrived in Tokyo, bringing Nana’s stuff, so first meeting. Not sure what you mean by friendly terms, Hachi is just being the same nice as always (she had also offered Yasu to stay the night) and she is not overly familiar (calling him Nobu-kun and not Nobu)

Nice! That’s probably (and by probably I mean 100%) intended.

I guess I expected some kind of introduction scene but the author skipped over that. Instead they’re immediately shown eating together.

Cultural ref p.155

Just now rereading with lookups.

This is apparently a reference to a character from an old anime Yatterman - Wikipedia (never heard of it personally)

And new expressions I learned:
サマになる to become good-looking / to start looking appropriate (for something)
ウマが合う to get on well (with a person)
向かう所敵無し invincible

馬が合う stood out to me as well, I thought it was a very funny image.

Would have been funnier if they had used it in Silver Spoon
