This is the main thread for reading the manga NANA―ナナ―(1). It wasn’t picked by the Intermediate Manga Club but but let’s read it anyways!
We’ll be reading together according to a weekly schedule, ask and answer questions in weekly threads, and we have a vocabulary sheet we’re building together to make this easier for everyone.
[DeepL Translation - needs review] Volume 1 Introduction: A girl with a happy name carves out her own destiny, by her own will… Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki…two girls with the same name unfold a touching love story! Two “Nana”, where is the happiness for each of them…?
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Welcome everyone! Excited to be finally reading NANA soon. I need to do some thinking about the pace, because there are no clear chapter cuts.
If you have any thoughts about how many pages (max or min) you would like to read feel free to let me know!
I’ll prepare some polls for the pace in the coming days.
True, I had seen this cut but somehow missed the もくじ, thanks.
And I’ve had a pick at volume 2, there are chapters!
Chapter 1 at the beginning of volume 2.
Chapter 2 page 59.
Chapter 3 page 107.
Chapter 4 page 145.
So maybe if people want to read on together it would be a 4 weeks per volume club. But let’s start with one volume and see what people think!
And we have a schedule
I will update the first post.
I am beyond excited to be reading this next month. It was one of the goal I had set when I started reading Japanese three years ago! I think 15 year old me would be very proud. Now I hope that 35 year old me is going to enjoy the reading too, you never know if things age well or not, plus the fact that we are going to read this as a group, so feeling a bit nervous too
this is so cool!! I’m glad you finally get to read this - congratulations!! :')
honestly, same! I think I was feeling too courageous when I voted for the “30 pages per week” option lol I just hope I don’t fall back too behind with this one
Crossing fingers that the pace will be okay with everyone too!
First part is 100 pages and second part 70 pages, so wasn’t sure how to split it. I’ve made the schedule (see first post) so that we read each part in three weeks, but the first part has a faster pace than the second one because it’s longer. Would people prefer that it’s cut differently? Don’t try to have a week ending at the end of part 1? Or 4 weeks for the first part and 2 weeks for the second part?
I was going to watch the Nana anime a while back but was kind of struggling with listening at the time and didn’t go beyond episode 1. Have heard so much good about it. I’m a little hesitant about starting something over 20 volumes right now but pretty tempted to join, maybe.
Thirty pages a week will be a challenge for me, but I will get myself organised because it’s NANA. @Akashelia, did the fifteen year old you read the manga in another language or watch the anime?
I think that makes sense too, will change the schedule!
I say great opportunity, try the first volume with us
I’ve read it in my mother tongue (French). Never seen the anime! It was known that I was a big NANA fan though so one day I got the movie adaptation as a gift. It was a DVD that was not playable in my region though so never saw it
What about you? Anime only?
I was trying to avoid orange level books for a while, since at this time I feel like I benefit more from easier reads, but since it’s NANA I’m seriously considering joining. I loved the manga as a teenager, and also watched the anime (loved the Anna Tsuchiya songs). From what I remember the 3 holes in my earlobe + 1 in the helix that teenage me had pierced were influenced by the rocker Nana
Same as @Akashelia, I hope 34 year old me is not too disappointed when I re-read this…
It’s funny that everyone’s experience with NANA either comes from watching the anime or reading the manga in a different language, while I’ve just been part of the NANA fandom on twt, consuming fanfics and fanarts - that’s my history with the legendary story
