We have read through volume one with a thread per week. This offshoot reading club is to continue reading this ongoing series together, through scheduled reading, though only 1 thread per volume.
Hello hello! I have been reading along but things in real life (booo) have been keeping me from posting! I have more I want to say, but I have had these questions for like two weeks that I’ve been dying to post!
There were a couple places in Chapter 4 that I couldn’t fully figure out:
Hachi is narrating:
「ナナがデタラメの英語を乗せて歌うから
まるで不思議な呪文でも掛けられて行くように
私はその夢の虜になったんだよ」
I think I understand this one slightly more now typing it out, but it’s the use of compound verbs like “乗せて歌う” or “掛けられて行く” that tend to throw me off as to what’s being conveyed.
The Absolute Funniest Panel in the Entire Series So Far
だって行くと言って、聞かないんだもん would be the more “standard” way to write that I think. In this case the specific nuance of 聞かない is I believe:
きかない１【聞かない】
1 〔言い張る・強情だ〕 insist on…; persist in…; do not [refuse to] change one’s mind.
2 〔聞かん気だ〕 headstrong; unbending; refractory 《child》.
Basically “he said he would go and wouldn’t hear anything about it” or less literally “he insisted that he would go and wouldn’t take no for an answer”
I was also confused by this sentence because at first I assumed that the 行くって was the thing being quoted by 聞かない (wouldn’t hear/ask to go) but that doesn’t make any sense here, so I think it’s two separate phrases: 行くって (said would go) and then 聞かない (wouldn’t be swayed).
I’m not entirely sure what’s the meaning of 乗せる here because it can mean so many things but maybe it’s just to convey that she’s roughly adding nonsensical English lyrics (yogurt as we call it in French) on top of the soundtrack.
I’d translate the entire sentence with something like “Nana was making up English-sounding lyrics on top of the music and it sounded like a wonderful spell that held me captive like in a dream”
掛ける is the idiomatic way to say “cast” as in “cast a spell” as far as I know. 掛けられて is just passive and 行く just denotes an ongoing process.
Sounds a little bit “rough” to me to have ない → ねぇ but it’s not that bad, I would say casual (unlike when he’s in his lawyer role). It would be more “rough” if there were a ぜ or ぞ in the end I think
Same with me. I miss Nana so much. I have a big work event coming up on Friday and every other area of my life is on pause because of that lol. I can’t wait to binge read on Sat and catch up with y’all!

It’d be perfect to have a week’s break, but I don’t want to hold the group back. Even without the break, I’m going to try and catch up in 3–4 days. So I’m giving myself a soft deadline of the 5th to finish Volume 3. Either way, watch me sprint
I just started volume 3 this morning so I hope I will be caught up very, very soon! The last few weeks have been annoyingly busy, but there is nothing more I want than to keep reading and talking about Nana! We’re just getting to all of the good stuff, too!

I’m hoping to jump in to the book club when volume 4 starts. I picked up that one at a used book store a wife ago, and it looks like I’ll have some more time shortly, so the stars seen to be aligning. If I’m able to keep up, I should be able to get the remaining volumes.
Anyway, in preparation, I reread the first three volumes in the English translation. When those came out, I send to remember hearing that there were some liberties taken in the translation. Is there anyone here who’s read the English version as well who could let me know if there’s any big changes that would throw me off giving into volume 4?
I could make a joke but I think that’s a typo, a funny one though
I have read them in French around 20 years ago so memory is a bit blurry, but as far as I can tell the story is the same. If anything the Japanese version is funnier? (like in Volume 2 I think, when Nana Komatsu is talking about Shouji being a like a girlfriend to her, she calls him Shou-chan, don’t know if they kept that in the translated versions

I think it would be difficult to significantly change the story without cutting pages, so if the page counts are the same it can’t be that different.
I’m thinking about the third season of the Sailor Moon English dub when they made Michiru and Haruka “cousins”, and even there with a rather significant change to the story, the actual plot is close enough to watch the next season without going back to see what happened. So I think even with liberties you’ll be fine, and you can always just ask us if you think you’ve missed something.
(I mean, I also don’t think we were fooling anyone with “cousins” nonsense )
My vague memory is that it was just translation issues in the text, along the lines of what @shitsurei mentioned. But checking the page count is a good idea; I’ll do that when I get home.
I haven’t found anything googling, so maybe I’m just misremembering.
