I have been searching for a manga series to buy and read on second-hand websites for a while now, and I recently discovered that someone is selling the Kakegurui Twin series, from volume 1 to 8. I’m wondering if Kakegurui is suitable for a Japanese reader at an N3 level, like myself, and if it’s an enjoyable read. I would really appreciate any ideas or opinions about it.
P.S. This will be my first-ever printed manga purchase. I was considering buying SpyXFamily, but I couldn’t find a good deal.
I’d suggest looking through for something around the level of Yotubato for the switch to paper, and probably not much higher level than 20 unless you’re feeling pretty confident. I guess at the N3 level you could probably even reach up to level 25 and it shouldn’t be too uncomfortable, but it really depends on how you got to N3 and how secure your grammar and vocab is. In any case, Level 27+ is going to be tough and slow going on paper at N3 level imo
I had gotten a few of the original Kakegurui printed manga before covid, I was excited to read them, but they were a slog for me at that time, got through a few but I had to put them down for a bit. Then I found the rest of the series in Japan just this last summer, thinking it would a good time to return to them, and I’m just now knocking them down. The dialogue is not bad, Yumeko is easy to follow, and most of the others are reasonable (except Kirari, I almost always learn new words on her scenes). But the plot texts and the nuances of the gambling games, the most important part IMO, are probably the most challenging reads. I would think Spy X would be easier but I see they are rated similarly (I’ve only watched the anime).
Wow, I’ve never heard of Natively, but it’s exactly what I needed. Thank you very much!
…and yeah, Yotsubato! feels pretty manageable for me right now, but jumping to something 30+ level wouldn’t make the process enjoyable, I think. I’ll be looking through this website and figuring out what to read next.
I see. Thank you very much for the insight. It seems quite clear to me that Kakegurui (especially Twin, since its rated even higher) might be an overshoot for me, at least for now, so I should find something easier to read after Yotsubato!
