I recently heard this in a podcast about Lincoln. It gets said a lot and is one of few words I’m picking up. I thought it was funny that it’s literally north south war.

Because it wasn’t originally 参

That’s a simplification to a similar-looking kanji that most people know. That’s a common source of “why the heck does [something] + [something] = [something seemingly unrelated]

Originally it’s 人蔘
