水 (water) - 水着 (swimwear)
下 (under) - 下着 (underwear)
上 (over or top) - 上着 (coat/jacket/outerwear or upper-body garment)

Funnily enough there’s also 寝間着 which can also be written 寝巻 or 寝巻き

滞在 (たいざい) - refers to staying at a place for a particular period of time.

Learnt that while trying to explain how long it took me to learn German while staying in Germany. Found it interesting that I can use いる in this context, but that’s also a word that’s used.

I first learnt that one in the context of visa stuff – for instance the Japanese 90-day short stay visa is a 短期滞在ビザ.

石菖/セキショウ - Acorus gramineus, a species of sweet flag known in English by such common names as Japanese sweet flag, Japanese rush, and grass-leaf sweet flag

庭石菖/ニワゼキショウ - Sisyrinchium rosulatum, blue-eyed grass

Only the second one is actually an iris (菖蒲(アヤメ)科)

However, 菖蒲 is also read ショウブ, and ショウブ科 is the family that contains the Acorus family of plants, while 菖蒲(ショウブ) itself also refers to a specific species, the Acorus calamus

So you’ve got:
菖蒲(アヤメ) = actual irises
菖蒲(ショウブ) = their leaves look similar those of irises, but they’re not actually related aside from both being monocots

Ay. I think I regret my interest in plants.

横たわる(よこたわる)to lie down
横になる(よこになる)to lie down

I haven’t sorted out the nuances (if any) between 横たわる and 横になる. 横になる seems more common.

I asked my husband to say English words and sentences, and I’d see if I could translate them. He said, “Lie down on the ottoman,” which led us to the dictionary. I like these words because I already know the kanji.

長椅子に横になってください。
ながいすによこになってください。
