Learnt that while trying to explain how long it took me to learn German while staying in Germany. Found it interesting that I can use いる in this context, but that’s also a word that’s used.
I first learnt that one in the context of visa stuff – for instance the Japanese 90-day short stay visa is a 短期滞在ビザ.

庭石菖/ニワゼキショウ - Sisyrinchium rosulatum, blue-eyed grass
Only the second one is actually an iris (菖蒲科)
However, 菖蒲 is also read ショウブ, and ショウブ科 is the family that contains the Acorus family of plants, while 菖蒲 itself also refers to a specific species, the Acorus calamus…
So you’ve got:
菖蒲 = actual irises
菖蒲 = their leaves look similar those of irises, but they’re not actually related aside from both being monocots
Ay. I think I regret my interest in plants.
上着 always gives me trouble–the pronunciation, anyway (うわぎ). Thanks for the reminder!

I asked my husband to say English words and sentences, and I’d see if I could translate them. He said, “Lie down on the ottoman,” which led us to the dictionary. I like these words because I already know the kanji.
