祥雲（しょううん）- auspicious/ominous cloud
and also something more common:
劣等感（れっとうかん） - inferiority complex, sense of inferiority

Could I ask where you saw that this could mean ‘ominous cloud’ as well? I’ve never seen 祥 being used to mean ‘ominous’. I don’t know about in Japanese, but in Chinese, when omens are involved, 祥 is usually contrasted with 悪, and is always positive.

I took the meaning from the kanji, but in this case ominous might not have a negative connotation.

I know that ‘ominous’ definitely looks like it’s related to ‘omen’, and probably meant something like ‘having the nature of an omen’ initially, but I think ‘ominous’ always has a negative connotation in English today. For example, here’s a definition from the Oxford Dictionary:
Giving the worrying impression that something bad is going to happen; threateningly inauspicious.
‘there were ominous dark clouds gathering overhead’

It means that you end up feeling like something is going to go wrong. That’s why I’m confused. Did you see ‘ominous’ or something similar for 祥 in a dictionary somewhere?

Right, makes sense. Yes, I agree “ominous” might not have been the best term. I didn’t see anything like that in any dictionary and the entries in Goo are positive:

生臭い - Reeking of fish/Reeking of blood
This life (生) stinks (臭)… It’s less fresh and more fresh-ly killed, so it reeks of fish, or reeks of blood. This can also mean depraved/decadent, or suspicious/fishy.
Reading: なまぐさい
This word combines the kun’yomi reading from both kanji, which you learn at level 3 and 20, respectively. If you know them well this should be no problem for you. Careful with the rendaku too.

Shhhh, whatever you saw before was an illusion etched into your mind. 
I learned this word: 一本調子, meaning “monotone”
But most importantly, I learned how to spell that word, i.e. type the ち with a dakuten: ippondixyoushi. That’s not something you get to type every day lol

I was surprised to see this word used on a variety show earlier (about insults celebrities get in comments on social media platforms). The fact that the katakana meaning lines up with the original English meaning (unlike words like ハイテンション) was even more surprising!

bit off topic but, native thai here. We also have iron chef here in thailand and it was absolutely amazing, probably one of the best cooking shows on tv, really technical and really entertaining at the same time ,I loved that show ( don’t think they make it anymore though sadly )
