Not strange, just funny the level is backwards. It reminds me of when Leebo reset from 60 to 06
綜合 or 総合 - そうごう - synthesis, coordination, putting together
Me and the Taiwanese restaurants again… I thought, if I pick the option that is not 肉 and not 魚, it must clearly be a vegetarian dish Oh boy…
As I kind of expected when I checked the kanji (after ordering…), it was pork and chicken.
BTW, the last entry in the left column of the menu says 木瓜. While in Japanese this word describes the Japanese quince, in Chinese it actually stands for papaya - very plausible indeed
And to top this all off, Google tells me that in German the papaya tree also goes by the name “melon tree”
I will start writing on this thread daily (mostly as a reminder to myself to put my new words in a list ! ). (I’m keeping away from translations… sorry)

Looking through old photos again, amazed at how much I’ve learned.

コイバナ [ or 恋バナ]
I heard it when I went out drinking with a group of Japanese friends. It came up in conversation because they asked me how to say コイバナ in English, but I didn’t know [and now don’t think there is such a word]. It seems to mean a conversation about gossip/romance relating to who likes who/ who’s dating who etc.
Looking up this word in Jisho didn’t give a great answer; so I tried in a Japanese-Japanese dictionary and got 恋愛に関する話題のこと。「友達と恋バナで盛り上がる] - this is very commiserate with my friends’ explanation.
手術 - しゅじゅつ - surgery
While rewatching Galaxy Express 999 noticed the kanji on a sign reading: 手術中
I think that’s しゅじゅつ
Haha derp. Yeah. Fixed.
水の泡 - coming to nothing; bubble on the surface of water; something that is short-lived
my dictionary gives a Japanese meaning as…
コイバナ: 若者語で,「恋の話」の略。恋バナ。恋ばな。
A shortened word of 恋の話 to become 恋バナ used by younger people.
I like to know native expressions.
I have one for you…
ヤンキー + 車 = ヤン車
If you don’t know these words just google it! lol
Oh cool, good one I know ヤンキー but I haven’t heard ヤンキー車 before; but I can imagine it lol. Is 車 read as くるま or しゃ? I guessed くるま but thought I’d double check
One of my newest WaniKani verbs:
役に立つ — to be useful
I even heard it in an episode of Death Note today and understood it without the help of the subtitles! (I’ve been watching the show subtitled with friends.)
I’d bet it’s しゃ. When used in a compound like that it’s usually しゃ. Like 痛車 (いたしゃ)
