Moo? 牝牛 vs 牛

I’m currently reading お休みなさい、お月様 to my little kid (she’s 25 days old…^_^)

Anyway, there is a cow, and it jumps over the moon in a picture. In the beginning it is mentioned like so:

絵の額は、牝牛がお月様を跳び越す絵。。。

And then later is

お休みお月様を飛べ越してる牛さん。

I get that the second is good night Mr. Cow jumping over the moon.

But, what is the function of 牝? Why is it in one but not the other?

Thanks

Hopefully someone who is more knowledgeable will be by in a minute, but I think 牝牛 is actually a female cow (so it’s actually Mrs. Cow is jumping over the moon.)
But I’m not 100% sure!

According to the dictionary, 牝牛 specifically refers to female cows, whereas 牛 refers to the species in general (which can include bulls). In this particular case, I think it’s just a synonym.

Ahh, Thanks ! I was reading it as a synonym, but I knew there had to be some subtle meaning I was missing.
Thanks!

Mrs. Cow it is.

I’d also like to add that it’s wonderful that you’re reading to your child! Congratulations on the little one!
