Mnemonics that make you remember the wrong sound

For reference this was changed to

Imagine you have to carry a hardcore (はこ) music fan home after a concert.

Still failed this one during review :smiling_face_with_tear:. Classical music lover here

I’ve never used the mnemonic for this one, Imagine you have to carry a box.

w a i t f o r i t . . .

箱を運ぶはこをはこぶ

Nice one for future reviews :ok_hand:. Perhaps more difficult as a first time mnemonic though?
運ぶ:lvl 10
箱 : lvl 16

It depends, if you only use WaniKani and nothing else for Japanese, not very useful,
wouldn’t suggest it for you had you not been level 22.
For me just the fact that the reading is はこ, the sound itself made an immediate connection. When you learn grammar it’s very common to use 箱 to teach the use of 中.

There are several words like 箱 椅子 机 公園 銀行 図書館 庭 猫 that are so commonly used for teaching location in grammar lessons, I can only assume most people already know them by sound if not the kanji itself before they get to their level on WaniKani.

You are right!! Now that you mention it, I’m certain I saw a 箱 on Lingodeer with a cat inside before I started on WK :person_facepalming:. Well looking forward to nailing that next review for 運ぶThanks for the tip!

Thanks for the ping. I had noticed it had been updated when it came up in reviews (and I inevitably failed it again ).
The new mnemonic using ‘hardcore’ is much better IMO. It is distinct from other mnemonics (at least from what I’ve encountered so far).
Also the link to the meaning (needing to carry a hardcore fan after a concert because they drank too much, got knocked out in the mosh pit, etc.) is much easier to imagine than ‘you need to carry a hawk for some reason.’

Good job WK team and thank you for listening to user feedback and continuing to make updates to your system! Much appreciated.

Examples of mnemonic patterns that make me systematically trip over:
a. 障害 hinder damage = disability : mnemonic assumes 害 comes first

b. 保障 preserve hinder = security : mnemonic assumes there’s 不 in between

I’m struggling particularly with pattern b as it recurs a lot. How do people deal with those patterns?

Hi! This was one of my leeches for the longest time as I wasn’t really getting it. The only thing that eventually got me through it is remembering that 保険 means insurance and 保健 means health insurance and so anything that has 保 in it is often a good thing and preserves things. Now the 保障 has the hinder meaning inside of it as well which is very confusing, but I started to uh, ignore the individual meaning that the 障 has and focused on remembering that this combination no matter what just means security, there was a brute force strength to be like Okay, 保 it’s good its preserve, also means conserve, what preserves and conserves things? Security!

As an aside; I found the late 20’s into the 30’s to be one of the harder batches of levels to go through. There are a lot of words that seem to have conflicting meanings if I looked at them for too long. It started me on a path to just try and remember the words and only have the vaguest hint of things when looking at the mnemonic aligned with the kanjis alone. Idk if that’s a strategy that will help but no matter what good luck!!!

Yikes, thanks for sharing! The 20s have been rough for me too :cold_sweat:. I ended up not only rewriting way more mnemonics than earlier, but also overriding the main meaning of the kanji in cases where a majority of the vocabulary used the secondary meaning.

I override the meanings a lot to help me remember them! Like right now I have this one kanji which WK labels as “concurrently” but the meaning in vocab is basically doing something at the same time, or as I call it dual-use type of meaning which yeah concurrently means that, but it’s too difficult to remember, so I just end up putting a similar synonym in it. I do try to keep burn reviews to the og WK meaning input though.
