Halp, I’ve been consulting my mnemonic map for 3 hours now. When will I reach the bottom?
@mods see OP. What do you think?
To clarify, I complain about a lot of things, but this one is not a complaint. Just a fun observation.
I did not know the word bosozoku when I got the kanji in a lesson nearly a year ago. But I learned it just for the sake of the mnemonic. Which is kind of odd (since mnemonics should arguably be based on a word or sound you already know). But whatever, there are lots of other mnemonics based on words I didn’t know beforehand, e.g. a few that come to mind:
I knew exceedingly little about Japanese culture/history when I decided to learn the language, and I was also never a fan of anime. So a lot of these are sort of bad for me, but I just see it as chance to both learn about a commonly known thing and then turn that commonly known thing into a mnemonic.
I use the mnemonic toe cookies for toku
This has actually been mentioned before by at least one other user, so our content team is already on it!
Thank you! Please don’t change it just yet, I still have to reach the bottom of this stack first. I’ll let you know when I do.
When dancing, I have two left feet.
When baking, I have three left feet and two right feet.
I had to ask an LLM to explain the joke. ![]()
And then even after that I had to think hard for a while to figure out how it was relevant to this thread. Well done.
