Misinformation in 値札

The lesson claims:

You learned the kun’yomi reading for 値 in the vocabulary word 値 (ね).

This is not true.

It’s one of the two readings taught with the vocab item. It even says “Generally, あたい refers to a numerical value in math, while ね is a formal word for ‘price.’” It can be easy to forget when words have multiple readings though because you only need to enter one during reviews.

Oops, that is indeed entirely my mistake. Although it still might help if “you learned this reading” was changed to “you learned this (alternate) reading”. In my experience, single kanji words with multiple readings are extremely rare… so rare that I often forget it’s a thing that happens. In this case I didn’t even think to check for it, I just saw the primary reading and used that to (wrongly) verify my position before making this post. Thanks for the pointer.

It will happen again a few times. How many people learn more than one reading the first time they do a lesson? ..not many is my guess.

There are two issues here I think. Agreed that most people don’t learn secondary readings for kanjis. But the real issue for me at least is just that I never expect a vocab word to have a secondary reading, because it is extremely rare AFAIK. Even though I know it happens, I never remember.

With a kanji, if I’m told “you learned this reading” but I don’t remember it, I instantly assume “well no I didn’t, because I ignore secondary readings until they are needed”.

But if I’m told that same thing with a vocab word, I just think… WTF? Which is why I think the rephrasing I suggested above might help in this specific rare case. Not a huge deal though.
