I’ve already made a few posts in LaTeX like that, and they worked out pretty well.

Anyhow, I hope the readings are going well. I might drop in from time to time (and this thread will be on my ‘Tracking’ list thanks to this reply anyway), but I’m not sure if I’ll be joining you guys in reading these articles. I’m currently 99% certain (I just need a few more minor announcements for confirmation) that I’ve been admitted to an engineering school with a heavy focus on computer science, and I know that one of the first languages that will be tackled is Java, so I intend to use my summer to study in advance and get ahead. As such, I think the most motivating way for me to combine this with my Japanese study (I’m now aiming to hit N1 within the next month or so) is to learn Java in Japanese. I’ll be doing so on Progate, which @NyappyTiramisu once recommended (thank you!), provided the course is free. (I’ll see if it is. If it isn’t… I’ll weigh my options.) I might come back to the Wikipedia articles if I feel the need to brush up on mathematical terminology though. 皆さん、頑張って!

Thanks for sharing. And I agree with you, it does make sense to not to be able to change the voting options after people already voted. Do you know if I can edit the post around the poll (not changing parts of the poll itself) without loosing the votes?

Beats me what I typed in the last two quizzes :see_no_evil: It always gave me some error not translating the latex code correctly. I was trying to reproduce the error with this post but now I’m not capable in doing so. I’m encouraged though to give the “latex code inside of a poll” stuff another try with the next quizzes.

And yes, you can change the text around the poll, it shouldn’t affect anything.

I watched this week’s videos. There is a lot of vocab. I can’t say I remember everything.
The second video was a bit more difficult because he uses a bunch of vocab that hasn’t been introduced, so I relied on the japanese subtitles quite a bit. There’s also some stuff about units that I wouldn’t really call math but that’s interesting too.

I just watched the fractions video. When I got to the 0.222 part, I knew immediately it was 2/9 because I have that pattern memorized, but I don’t think I’d actually seen that method for figuring out the fraction before. If I did at some point, I’d completely forgotten it. So it was pretty interesting to see that.

Overall, not that many useful terms in the fractions video though, at least compared to the previous two videos. Partly that’s because I don’t feel like memorizing words like 通分 and 約分 though…

The classification of numbers video had a lot of useful terms, but I’d already looked all those up in the last couple weeks, so none of them were new to me.


Hopefully I’ll have time to watch the next two videos this week as well.

Finally caught up… which means I’m still one article behind :see_no_evil: Well, I read the introduction of this weeks WP article but I’m not sure if I’ll go into the details…

Also, after watching the Math 2.1 and 2.2 videos from last week I feel like “trigonometric functions” might not be the best article to solidify the vocab from those videos. How do guys feel? Maybe 幾何学 would have been a better choice? :innocent:

I also caught up on the “history of natural numbers” part. Thanks @miwuc senpai for sharing the quiz. I was quite surprised when I read that section.

Upcoming week we will learn about data visualization if I recall correctly. So yes, some of the topics are loosely connected to mathematics.

Now I’m able to reproduce the error… although it still puzzles me…

Okay, I managed to read through the 定義 section as well. And I was glad to see some of the terms from the triangle section and circle section in the Math 2.1 video popping up. As well as the basic terms for 1D and 2D spaces as discussed in Math 2.2. Interestingly, 辺 is used for “edge” in a mathematical / geometrical context. So, I really hope you could reinforce at least some of last weeks vocab marathon :blush:

I watched this week’s videos and as usual I enjoyed them and found them really well done. I did have to use the japanese subtitles again though.
However, I haven’t even touched last week’s wikipedia article. I have to say, they’re really a chore for me :confused: I might read it eventually, but only out of book club solidarity.

Don’t worry and feel free to skip it. The reading should be enjoyable not draining. Challenging maybe (sometimes) and interesting of course :slight_smile:

I think, @Wildjinjer senpai mentioned as well that the WP articles are quite challenging and less engaging than the YouTube videos. If it is okay with you, we can try to find out what it is that makes them less enjoyable or how we can help each other to make them more enjoyable.

I stretched this weeks reading from one to two weeks but in return cancelled the “bonus” article. So we have a little bit more time to discuss the current article or maybe do some vocab collecting / grammar discussion first.

Before jumping into the next article maybe go through the following questions ~ either for yourself or share your thoughts in here.

  • (i) What is the most blocking element to make the WP articles enjoyable / pleasant to read?
  • (ii) What is it you’d like to get out of a WP article (section) after reading it?

You can approach the questions from different perspectives ~ Japanese vocab / grammar, math content is exiting / unfamiliar / boring / too abstract / … , interest in reading intensive / extensive, interest in having discussions ~ basically anything. It is our book club so we can shape it the way we want to :slight_smile:

Interest basically. I had no issue reading Wikipedia articles recently for topics I was familiar with and interested in (various arithmetic and geometry articles). Specifically for the second and third articles, I don’t like trigonometry or statistics, so I just skipped them. I’m not familiar with the next topic, but it looks complicated, so I might just skip that one as well.

My goal is to get used to university-level mathematics in Japanese, so I’m mainly using the Wikipedia articles to collect vocabulary and expressions for my Anki deck. Language aside, the articles are more enjoyable to me the more I’m interested in the topic. For example with the article on natural numbers, I skipped the historical section but spent more time on the technical part with the axiomatic definitions since that was pretty interesting, even though it also felt more difficult language-wise. With the trig functions article, I’m a bit intimidated by how long it is (even though there isn’t that much text) so I haven’t started it yet :sweat_smile:

Thanks for sharing. And I can totally understand skipping is the way to go for content that is boring or not useful for your learning objectives :slight_smile:

The last topic will be basic algebra. The WP article then is about “vector spaces”.

I see. Yes only reading parts of the article makes sense. What I do in here is to set smaller goals, e. g. at the beginning of a week I set to goal to read the introduction or to read (section name here) section. When I hit the goal and there is more time left, I set the next one. For me personally it takes out the pressure to not aim for the full article from the very beginning. If I end up reading the whole article though that super cool. Otherwise, if I end up reading the part(s) I wanted to read from the beginning it still feels rewarding :slight_smile:

To also share a little bit… for me the most blocking part these days is RL related. Otherwise I’m good with the strategy not to aim for the full article at once. They definitely do look intimating :sweat_smile:

Apart from that, for me personally the important part about the articles is that I’m familiar with the content. So I don’t want to learn new content about the topics themselves as a main goal ~ although I don’t mind if it happens of course. I mainly want to experience how it is expressed in Japanese and see (some) of the vocab from the videos in action. I like the videos but they are also quite dense, I think.


In case anyone went for the article on normal distributions feel free to share your thoughts or questions. I haven’t prepared any quizzes yet and will most likely have to postpone it probably to the weekend :see_no_evil:

During the final two weeks we will learn about basic algebra terms and topics. It’s only one video but it’s little bit longer this time, I think. The article will be about vector spaces and quite long again. I’ll have a look into it at the weekend and will try to give some more info’s / recommendations about each section. …and in case I don’t do it feel free to remind me :sweat_smile:

As the final WP article is incredible long as well my suggestion would be to have look into the “definitions” section (定義). We will meet a few terms from our first WP article about natural numbers here.

If you want you can also have a look into the “examples” section (例). During our last book club we also came across the following video. It is a more practical introduction and uses the euclidean space as an example:

I should’ve participated in this since I’m a math professor and I’ve worked with Japanese students before. Sadly, I’ve been going through teacher burnout. But I’d certainly be interested in participating if this gets revived!
