Uhm… When navigating from “Adventure” to “Home” the artwork flashes briefly - a bug? or a subliminal message? ![]()
The technical answer to that is that its a fullscreen modal (overlay) and on page navigation all modals close by default to prevent other issues from popping up. I’ll put it on the list to take a look at when I have some downtime ![]()
Glad you like the new dashboard by the way!
New Mobile Apps Update - v1.0.13 - Adventure Dashboard!
I completely forgot to post this here! It’s been live for quite a few weeks now already. Whoops!
The good news, though, is that even though this announcement talks about one of the newest and most exciting features for making the most out of your MM studies, by now a new release is also shaping up pretty well! So expect v1.0.14 to pop up relatively soon too!
But for now, let’s get into the details of the Adventure Dashboard, which I’m hoping most of you have gotten to play around with already. But just in case you don’t know what it is, I’ll go ahead and do a little recap:
The Adventure Dashboard (Mobile edition)
On the adventure screen (both overworld and inside a region), you will now see a new button floating on-screen. Tap on this button to open the dashboard view.
It looks something like this:
Or like this in dark theme:
After opening it, the dashboard gets saved as your default view for Adventure (for this device) from now on, meaning it will automatically open if you go to any of the adventure pages. You can switch back to the artwork view again by tapping on the “MAP” button (at the top), and that will become your default again. This also means you get to bypass all of the region artwork in case that wasn’t really your cup of tea!
General Usage
First, let’s talk about some of the many things that show up here:
You can see all the regions at a glance, and tapping on them opens the contents of that region (just like how N3 is opened by default for me, as that’s my current region).
Hovering over the ( i ) icon will show you a few statistics about your progress in the region:
You also get a progress bar for each region, showing you your overall progress.
As stated above, for me, it opens up N3 by default, as that’s the region I’m currently in. Scrolling down (or using the button to scroll automatically!!), you will see that it also expanded the “Chapter” (and Tile) I’m at by default, too:
Now you might be wondering… Chapter? Yep! That’s a new thing! We’ve gone through all the regions and divided the tiles by chapters. For most regions, this comes down to the batches in which we release them (so 5 Grammar Lessons, 1 Reading Exercise, and 1 Unlocks Batch), but in some cases, we’ve also divided them per topic. It’s still the same order as the normal adventure path, though, no changes there!
Anyways, back to the dashboard! Most chapters are minimized to save space, but they will still show you your progress on the tiles in them. You can still tap on the Tile circles to open the corresponding information pop-up modal, but you can also just tap on “SHOW INFO” in case you wish to see the chapter details. The tile you are currently at has its chapter details expanded automatically, and so do the chapters after it. It’s only once you go past a chapter that it minimizes by default.
Anything that’s greyed out/translucent is something you’ve already completed before; anything that’s prominent is something you still have left to do.
Now you might be thinking, didn’t we already have a list view/sidebar for Adventure? You’re right! But that view didn’t include any of the following functionality:
Searching & Filtering
The best thing about this new view is that you gain the power to search through all our content (which is quite extensive by now!) in a few quick ways!
First up is our search functionality, which works exactly like how you’d expect it to. You search for a specific thing, say “polite form” and it will bring up the lesson(s) corresponding to that query, close any regions without any results, and hide all unrelated tiles.
The real power comes from combining this with our new filters:
Not only can you combine this with Region filters and Tile Type filters, but also our new “Concepts” filters. Things like “Conjugations”, or those pesky “Have to” grammar points, now all have their corresponding grammar lessons tagged, making it super easy to figure out where to learn about them or review them again! We think you’ll love this feature!
That also brings us to the following filter & functionality:
Bookmarking
We also have a bookmarks filter! Meaning we’ve also added a way for you to bookmark lessons.
Just tap on the greyed-out bookmark icon next to a tile, and bam! Saved for later! Tap on it again to unmark it.
You can then use the bookmarks filter at the top to quickly view all your bookmarks:
Your bookmarks are also saved on the MM servers, so they’re available right away on any device you use!
One last thing: At the top of the view, we’ve also added a button that opens your current tile automatically. So starting your next tile is as simple as going to adventure and tapping that button to continue where you left off!
So there we have it! The dashboard on mobile! One of the very first features to get a simultaneous web and app release on MaruMori! And also one of many more to come!
As mentioned above, expect the next app update to come relatively soon, as we haven’t been sitting still in the time since we actually released this! Study Friends, Profile pages, and, if time allows, the leeches & recently studied pages will all be included in the next release. More on that soon!
Happy Studies!!
@neicul When does the MaruMori and Kitsun subscription sales typically occur?
It typically starts around mid-Dec, so around a month left to go! ![]()
I hope it’s a juicy discount this year. I really like the grammar lessons and practice drills but don’t need the vocab and other bells and whistles. Kind of hard to justify the price when I’m not using all the functionality. ![]()
I was originally going to do MM just for the grammar exercises (because I didn’t like BP’s hints), thinking there was no point in vocab and kanji because I had it covered elsewhere.
Me now:
As it turns out, I didn’t want to use the other features yet.
I just don’t want to do anymore vocab SRS after WK. I think MM makes sense if you’re studying for JLPT but that’s not my primary goal. I’d rather spend my spare time reading real Japanese books or watch shows. ![]()
I definitely understand where you are coming from in regards to not wanting to do more SRS, I think most of us would have liked to focus on immersion without SRS at some point.
Speaking from experience (I “completed” WK many years ago), it’s pretty likely you’ll still want to SRS even after completing WK, as you are still going to be missing many, many words.
However, it definitely feels different to immerse and then add the vocabulary/kanji to SRS than it does to study from a premade list/system like WK
So it’s not all that bad!
As for the discount, it’s the same as every sale ![]()
Definitely agree on the reading part, and on the second “vocab SRS” that had been my initial thought. The grammar tiles in MM assume that you should be familiar with the vocabulary unlocked up to that point and I noticed I generally wasn’t. As I started looking further, it’s because MM appears to be focused more on vocabulary than WK, which is focused primarily on kanji and so there’s a lot of vocabulary items that I’d never see on WK that I now know because of seeing them in MM. I’m at the point where I don’t consider WK to be a “vocab” SRS as much as a kanji SRS that has mixed in vocabulary to support learning the kanji.
I went through the numbers a little out of curiosity and where I’m at right now:
WK: 2400 vocabulary “learned” - in this case, any vocab item where I’ve completed a lesson.
MM: 2690 vocabulary “learned” - again, anything in the SRS or that has been marked as “known” either because I already knew the word and marked it manually or because it’s been marked as known automagically because the linking to my WK account.
That seemed off to me, but then I looked a little further - the overlap is 1693 (well, a little less since some of the things I manually marked as known may not have been in MM at all, especially pure kana vocab like おはようございます or パスポート). So there’s essentially a thousand vocabulary words I’ve learned through MM that aren’t in WK yet - some will fall off in time (I’ve done about 70 kanji there that haven’t unlocked here yet), but there are a lot of them that are just not in WK. Likewise, there’s some stuff in WK that I guess isn’t in MM at all, and while the obvious example is Napoleon III just because that one is funny, I’m not sure what it is there. What I have noticed is sometimes I’ll see a new reading for a kanji inside a vocab word in MM and then when I look to see if there’s one in WK that uses that reading (I copy mnemonics over when possible, silly but it’s my method so…) there often isn’t.
Since I’m short on time at the moment, I’ll sum up my opinions and my standard reminder that my opinions for what works for me are what works for me, and definitely I’ve had times where I thought the extra vocab was pointless. I think now, I’m happier with doing less lessons in both, since I think WK is good at teaching the kanji via radicals (though obviously opinions vary on how they pick which reading to use as ‘correct’ for kanji), and I think it’s much better than MM there. I think MM has a wider set of vocabulary and seems like more useful ones as well, though the mnemonics are still not there yet at all for the most part on vocab. I think the grammar / adventure stuff (and included reading lessons) are worth the price of admission by themselves, but again the “just me” thing and that’s my opinion today, but if you look back six months my thoughts on resources were vastly different and I’m sure they’ll continue to evolve. I agree the actual immersion is key, and so how you build up the framework to get you there is a matter of personal preference and learning style.
MaruMori can like your link your WK account so you don’t have to re-learn the kanji you’ve learnt on WK?
I’m down for the sale. Please send me a mention when it happens (in case I forget, just too busy some days!)
I was considering BP (no disrespect for those using it) for grammar but I’m liking MM more because the MM app seems more polished.
It can yeah! You can enable a sync (or one-time import) on the setting page over at MM ![]()
I’ll try to remember to tag you
Thanks for wanting to support us!
I’m currently on level 31 on WK.
Since you’ve “completed” WK already, would it be beneficial to carry over my current WK level to MM?
I wouldn’t mind starting from level 1 for kanji on MM but I would do so for extra revision and vocab words that may not be here on WK.
Saying that, would it be redundant to start from level 1 kanji on MM given I already on WK level 31?
Thoughts?
Also, this is one time import only**?** No option to re-import or reset later on?
You wanted to say something?
