Hey!
Our next sale is due pretty soon (less than two weeks
as we’re nearing the 2nd anniversary of MaruMori’s launch).
The sale price for lifetime typically is $274.99 (with a quick note that this might change in the future)
Other than the anniversary sale, we’ve also held a Spring sale and the usual Christmas/New Year’s sale. Out of the three, only the Christmas sale is pretty much guaranteed, though!
Ohhh, thanks! I’ll keep those dates in mind ![]()
Hey everyone!
Yet another mobile app update was approved by the app stores! The fourth one in a short period, totally not because someone reported an issue with the results page of the Verb Transitivity Trainer… No, definitely not ![]()
Anyways! The good news is that along with a fix for the above mentioned results page, it also brings a neat feature to the mobile apps that many of you had been waiting for:
We’ve replaced the Suggest Changes button above the navbar on the Grammar Lesson page with a new “more” button. Tapping this button brings up two additional buttons:
Tapping the latter will bring up the lesson settings modal, where you can change if/how furigana shows up on Japanese text in the lesson as a whole, as well as tell it to blur English translations in example sentences or not.
If you enable “tap to show” for furigana, it hides all furigana by default, but when you tap on a kanji (compound), it will show the furigana as usual. This is a great way to test yourself on kanji readings! This setting is now the default for the mobile apps.
In this screenshot, you can see that I’ve tapped on one of the English translations, and a few kanji (but not all) to show the corresponding translation and furigana. It’s that simple!
Verb Transitivity Trainer - Fixed the results screen answers
Statistics - Added extra padding to the bottom for the heatmap tooltip to show properly when tapping on the last days.
SRS Lessons & Reviews - Fixed an issue where it wouldn’t accept answers with ー in them for reading layouts.
Kanji Imposters - Kanji now show up a bit more towards the bottom of the screen to make them easier to tap.
Images - Images (like Maru in the navbar) would sometimes glitch out and show a purple square. This was a bug in the framework we were using, and it should be fixed now, as we’ve updated to the latest version of the framework.
That’s about it for now! But keep an eye out for more app updates soon! We’ve already finished work on implementing Quick Study into the app, but want to add a few additional features/pages before releasing yet another update!
Sale please
In about 24h ![]()
Hey everyone!
In celebration of our second anniversary since our full launch on the 14th of August, 2023, we’ve decided to hold a special lifetime sale.
We’ve created a sales page where we (hopefully) answer most of the questions you might have. You can take a little looksie over here:
We can’t believe it’s already been two years since our launch out of open beta! Somehow it feels like just yesterday (and at the same time like 10 years ago haha!)… Oh, how time flies, huh…
It’s also nice to look back at what we’ve accomplished since then, as well as look forward to all of the exciting features and content we’ve got in store for you in the coming year(s)! So to help with that, we’ve also updated our roadmap to give a better indication of what is coming (and when), as well as added tags to show what type of feature/content it is:
Anyhow! I’m sure many of you’ve been waiting for this moment, so be sure to check out the billing page to take advantage of this sale and join the rest of the cult lifetimers in their endless devotion to Maru studying Japanese:
For those of you who plan to support us, or are already doing so, thank you so much! We really couldn’t do this without your support and (heaps of) feedback. All of you have helped us make the site and mobile app so much better already, and we’re excited to continue to improve them even further. Thank you!
- The MaruMori Team
Another week, another N2 content drop, another chocolate croissant secured. (I’m allowed one per batch, according to the rules. Although, as they say, rules were made… to be broken.)
In this batch of content, we’ve really pulled out all the stops, giving you not just one, but TWO ways to say “in the end” (~あげく and ~末に), as well as TWO ways to express your desires (~たいもの and ~ない(だろう)か). What can I say, we were feeling generous.
For vocab and kanji, we’ve got distinguished items such as 睡眠 (“sleep”, but fancy), 飾る (“to decorate”), and 砂糖 (“sugar”). Incredible!
And last but not least, this week’s reading exercise features fireworks, doggos, and dementors. What’s not to love?
All of this and more, available now, in the Sands of Mastery!
Happy studies!
Hmm… a weird question somewhat related to this - is it possible to have all lessons in “Adventure” displayed as a list? The current UI is very “かわい” and I like it but - when looking for a particular thing I just found out it’s near impossible to figure out where/when it would be.
I was looking for が particle, so I went to the Study List, I see it has indes 1100 and it still almost twice I’ve done so far (I’m at item with index 800). When I open the grammar entry (Grammar Information about が - MaruMori) it has link to the lesson at the bottom ( https://marumori.io/adventure/elementary/grammar-lesson/31866022 ) which is tagged elementary #17 but! There is no way to figure out the position of this lesson in the journey view (save for clicking all tiles) ![]()
EDIT: OK, there is a neat button in the upper-left corner which opens the list
![]()
Though a small nitpick: would it be possible to make the list open with the current lesson scrolled to the top (first visible item) or middle of the view? Currently, it scrolls to the current-studied-lesson but it’s at the end of the screen
Currently opens with the lesson at the bottom:
Would be better to have it as first:
Also (I think I asked it before) - would it be possible to somewhat improve/streamline “continue learning” and open next lesson directly? Or at the least open the “lesson-to-be-done” tile automatically upon opening particular section? For example:
At the moment I feel there is quite a lot of clicking to start learning that’s getting a bit tedious after a while ![]()
EDIT:
Is it possible to have the comment section in lessons collapsable and collapsed by default? ![]()
Heya!
Funny you asked, I’m actually right in the middle of implementing the alternative view for Adventure. Here’s a little sneak preview:
The idea is to have a screen similar to the Grammar Library, where you can search, filter (e.g., only reading exercises, etc), and bookmark specific lessons. If you’re on the overworld page, it will show all regions by default; if you’re on a specific region’s page, it will only show the current region (but you can show the others), letting you search through a specific region easily.
This will be a toggle on the adventure pages, and it will remember your last view. So you can switch between the art and the list view whenever you want, and next time it will remember your last choice.
Also (I think I asked it before) - would it be possible to somewhat improve/streamline “continue learning” and open next lesson directly? Or at the least open the “lesson-to-be-done” tile automatically upon opening particular section?
I haven’t gotten around to this yet, but I think your second suggestion here makes a lot of sense! I personally tend to skip around a bit in a region (I only focus on doing a grammar lesson per day atm), so it opening a reading exercise popup or page automatically would not work for me, as I’d want to get to the region page to pick the next tile manually. But your suggestion of automatically opening the modal probably wouldn’t hurt! (except on mobile, as it covers the whole screen, so you’d need to close the modal first in my case).
Is it possible to have the comment section in lessons collapsable and collapsed by default?
I’ll be reworking the comment section in general, as right now it’s very biased towards older (often out-of-date) comments. Sometimes the comments reference things before the lesson got split up into multiple newer lessons and so on.

As they say: “Great minds think alike!” ![]()
But on a more serious note - this looks very convenient to use ![]()
OK, my use-case is somewhat different (and probably more in-line with the site design/intention) and I basically follow the adventure one-by-one relying on the Authors to guide me on my journey hence having it open automatically would be so convenient ![]()
Though, the “Let’s learn” coniuation button on the first page really could open the next lesson directly here
If someone wants to jump around then there is still the route through “Adventure” view?
I’ll refer back to my initial answer for that ^^
Regarding な and い adjectives, I guess we could make the prompt english instead, but they’re so basic that it’s difficult to test haha. I think the other type of grammar srs reviews we have (unscramble) is a bit better suited for these. Luckily the difficulty ramps up quite quickly so it’s not really an issue later on ![]()
Thanks for the feedback!
Yet another content drop??? Yes! The rumours are true! And so are the rumors, for all of our American users! But before we get into all that, as the summer winds down, along with the MaruMari anniversary sale (!!!), I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge all of our lovely users.
…
Okay done! Acknowledged. Now to the good stuff.
This week’s batch features some real heavyweight grammar points. In the red corner, wearing the white shorts, we’ve got ~てたまらない・てしかたがない for “can’t help but feel X”. And in the blue corner, wearing pink, there’s ~てならない for… “can’t help but feel X”. So, who’s going to win? What’s the difference between these two? You’ll just have to check out the lessons to find out!
And for vocab, there are awesome and useful words such as 忍者 (“ninja”), 忍ぶ (“to endure; to hide”), and… 茶, for “tea”.
And be sure not to skip this week’s reading, as we take a look a high-tech lawn, the true identity of the pizza thief is finally revealed, and the gang takes a trip to the MaruMori escape room!
All of this and more, available now (yes, now!) in the Sands of Mastery!
Happy studies!
P.S.: Sale is getting closer to the end ![]()
Woops forgot to post this one here ![]()
Rocky theme
The champ… is here! Punching and kicking and jabbing and ducking and weaving and bobbing and also swerving their way… to victory!!! All the way from the Sands of Mastery! It’s… AN N2 CONTENT DROP!!!
This week’s grammar features the ever-magnanimous ~に限って (with not one, not two, but three usages!), ~のみ, a fancy “only”, and the mystery-beset ~まい・のではあるまいか (oh… my!).
And for vocab, we’ve got words such as 俳句 (“haiku”), 免許 (“license”), and 致命的 (“fatal”). Think of all the sentences you can make with those!
What’s more, this week’s reading features nepotism in the workplace, a house party, and some surprising info about the awesome and mysterious elephant!
All of this and more awaits you in the sandy N2 region…
Happy studies!
Hey all!
We’re excited to announce that we’ve been working hard on updating and refining the main unlock list, and that we’ve just put the changes live! Below you’ll find a complete list of all the changes we’ve made, sorted by category.
Overall, this marks the third big batch of changes we’ve made to the main list, and we’re really zeroing in on what we feel will be the perfect, final iteration.
That being said, we are constantly looking to fine-tune things, and have several more improvements we’d like to make (including a to-be-added list of vocab and kanji). Expect more updates in the near future!
Two quick and important things to note are that:
Removed items move to the Graveyard Study List (you can grab it from the premade section to manage the items in there, but do not do any lessons from that list (as there’s a good reason why we removed the items from the main list haha).
Additions/Replacements and Moved items will show up in your lesson queue automatically if they were added to an unlock batch (tile) that you already unlocked previously. So no need to manually unlock them!
These are items that were close, but no cigar. For most of them, we’ve simply changed the form to be the more common one, but for others, we’ve swapped out entries entirely.
Replaced “あの” with “その” in unlocks batch #1.
Replaced “打合せ” with “打ち合わせ” in unlocks batch #15.
Replaced “飛んでもない” with “とんでもない” in unlocks batch #23.
Replaced “里” with “里 (さと)” in unlocks batch #33.

Replaced “先ず” with “まず” in unlocks batch #100.
Replaced “知合い” with “知り合い” in unlocks batch #133.
Replaced “付合う” with “付き合う” in unlocks batch #21.
One of the more frustrating things about creating a list of vocab and kanji that at least somewhat conforms to the JLPT track, is that often higher-level kanji are used for very basic vocab. This means that while 暖かい may be N5 vocab, the kanji is considered N1. Sheesh!
This is doubly a challenge for us, because we use kanji you already know to teach you new ones, meaning that if you don’t already know a kanji, you can’t learn any new kanji that use that one as an element.
That being said, we’ve targeted some of the worst offenders and moved them up on the track, so you’ll be able to learn more basic words, sooner.

Hurray! Fewer items!
With 118 deletions, your workload just got a bit lighter. Keep in mind that all deleted items will go to the “MaruMori Graveyard List”, from where you can still suspend, demote, promote, etc.
Most of these items were redundant (i.e., same word, different form), a liiiittle too niche, or just didn’t belong in this iteration of the main study list.

That’s all for now! Enjoy your newly unlocked lessons if any were placed in unlock batches you already unlocked before!
Heya!
Today we’ve got a major upgrade for you all! Something that’s been requested many times before:
A whole new way to view, search, filter, and bookmark the adventure regions and their tiles! No more animated artwork (
) unless you want it!
Let’s dive into how you can make the most out of it:
On the adventure pages (both overworld and inside a region), you will now see a new button floating on-screen. Clicking on this button will open the dashboard view.
It looks something like this:
Or like this in dark theme:
After opening it, the dashboard gets saved as your default view for Adventure (for this device) from now on, meaning it will automatically open if you go to any of the adventure pages. You can switch back to the artwork view again by clicking on the “MAP” button, and that will become your default again. This also means you get to bypass all of the region artwork in case that wasn’t really your cup of tea!
But first, let’s talk about some of the many things that show up here:
You can see all the regions at a glance, and clicking on them opens the contents of that region (just like how N3 is opened by default for me, as that’s my current region).
Hovering over the ( i ) icon will show you a few statistics about your progress in the region:
You also get a progress bar for each region, showing you your overall progress.
As stated above, for me, it opens up N3 by default, as that’s the region I’m currently in. Scrolling down (or using the button to scroll automatically!!), you will see that it also expanded the “Chapter” (and Tile) I’m at by default, too:

Now you might be wondering… Chapter? Yep! That’s a new thing! We’ve gone through all the regions and divided the tiles by chapters. For most regions, this comes down to the batches in which we release them (so 5 Grammar Lessons, 1 Reading Exercise, and 1 Unlocks Batch), but in some cases, we’ve also divided them per topic. It’s still the same order as the normal adventure path, though, no changes there!
Anyways, back to the dashboard! Most chapters are minimized to save space, but they will still show you your progress on the tiles in them. You can still click on the Tile circles to open the corresponding information pop-up modal, but you can also just click on “SHOW INFO” in case you wish to see the chapter details. The tile you are currently at has its chapter details expanded automatically, and so do the chapters after it. It’s only once you go past a chapter that it minimizes by default.
Anything that’s greyed out/translucent is something you’ve already completed before; anything that’s prominent is something you still have left to do.
Now you might be thinking, didn’t we already have a list view/sidebar for Adventure? You’re right! But that view didn’t include any of the following functionality:
The best thing about this new view is that you gain the power to search through all our content (which is quite extensive by now!) in a few quick ways!
First up is our search functionality, which works exactly like how you’d expect it to. You search for a specific thing, say “polite form” and it will bring up the lesson(s) corresponding to that query, close any regions without any results, and hide all unrelated tiles.
The real power comes from combining this with our new filters:
Not only can you combine this with Region filters and Tile Type filters, but also our new “Concepts” filters. Things like “Conjugations”, or those pesky “Have to” grammar points, now all have their corresponding grammar lessons tagged, making it super easy to figure out where to learn about them or review them again! We think you’ll love this feature!
That also brings us to the following filter & functionality:
We also have a bookmarks filter! Meaning we’ve also added a way for you to bookmark lessons.
Just click on the greyed-out bookmark icon next to a tile, and bam! Saved for later! Click on it again to unmark it.
You can then use the bookmarks filter at the top to quickly view all your bookmarks:
Your bookmarks are also saved on the MM servers, so they’re available right away on any device you use!
One last thing: At the top of the view, we’ve also added a button that opens your current tile automatically. So starting your next tile is as simple as going to adventure and clicking that button to continue where you left off!
I’m also pleased to tell you that our mobile app update containing the dashboard functionality is also ready to go! So we’ll be submitting it to the app stores this weekend. Approval usually takes a day or two, so expect all the same functionality to arrive on your phones (if you don’t use the mobile website) on Monday or Tuesday!
We hope you’ll enjoy using this new alternative view for Adventure! We’ve already gotten much use out of it ourselves by searching for lessons where we’ve needed to make changes and such. And personally, I’ve been bookmarking quite a few grammar lessons to reread later on, hehe ![]()
That’s all for now, but I’ll write another announcement once the Mobile App update goes live! See you soon!
It is amazing! so much easier to navigate! <3
Though animated artwork is awesome it starts to get in the way in the long run :((((( but I’ll jump back to it every now and then just to enjoy it <3
