Marking as correct when I miss the long う or お

Okay… it’s just that @Pizh (the person who is not a native English speaker and mentioned s and z) and the OP are not the same person, that’s all my point was. You had mentioned the OP as the person who mentioned s and z.

And who mentioned ちょ or ちよ?

Wow. I am blind. Thanks, lol

It’s a long vowel, like op described.

Neither ちょ nor ちよ has a long vowel.

I guess reading is hard

I’ve lived in Japan for 5 years and pronouncing words without that extra お or う will genuinely confuse people. I kinda get with you’re getting at, but if you’re not elongating those vowels, you’re actually pronouncing it wrong. That said, you really have to, and should, just memorize it. Don’t take the easy way out because in this case, the easy way out is actually wrong.

You are very correct. The more mistakes you allow yourself to gloss over this early in learning, the harder it’ll be to fix them.

haha I don’t know what I was hoping. There are certainly allot more replies than I expected.

As for what I’ve decided to do, I’ll probably leave it marked as wrong most of the time. Definitely if it was about to be burned and I get a long vowel う mixed up with long vowel お or vice versa.

Allot of people here talked about not doing this early on would mean I am not learning correct Japanese, while that is a strong point, it’s just not as relevant to me. I am doing this for fun and don’t want to stress out and be discouraged to learn the language. As long as I feel I can understand the jist of what is being said and others could understand of the jist of what I am saying, I’m satisfied.

Main reason I decided I should leave as incorrect the majority of the time (if not all the time) came to me when I was thinking about it earlier today and that’s that the IMEs on pretty much all the computer systems won’t give me the kanji I am looking for if I do get it mixed up, even if sometimes it is just a matter of swapping the う and お and then getting the answer I am looking for it, I can definitely imagine it being a huge pain in my neck when it does occur.
