Is this for some niche usage?

Sort of…

Summary

Grammatically it’s just the polite version of the “to be” verb, である and it’s identical in meaning with です. It’s not really used much, however in military situations you see it a lot for some reason, it seems to be standard. For example you might translate “Aye aye sir!” with “了解であります”. I was using this slightly unusual form to try and sound funny because it’s out of place.
:man_shrugging:

Sad to see the old mnemonic go :slightly_frowning_face:

Here’s what it was:

There is someone with a bow and a stick, wearing horns, going down a slide. What type of person do you imagine? I’d say someone who’s an immature boy. That would be your younger brother.

Unfortunately, he goes down this slide too fast, bounces off the bottom, and then falls right on his stick. It goes through him, causing your younger brother to die (だい). That’s right, he’s dead (で) now.

You can’t do better than that  but I guess it was a bit gory.

Here is the new one:

Your younger brother loves playing dress up so much that he’s now started dyeing his hair all kinds of colors. Imagine the bright red, blue, green and purple dye in his hair.

What the heck, though? I learned it with the old one.
