No that I know of although I recently found a manga I want to read that must have had its origins there!
oh dear, no, now I see I completely misread that part in the wrong direction
September 24, Thursday
Holy mackerel. What a couple of weeks it has been.
Work – I made my bosses cry. … Just kidding. I cried! But things should start getting better now. And I have one co-worker in particular who has been so supportive and helpful during this weird time.
Exercise – I watched Physical 100 Mexico.
(I am inspired to see how many steps I can stairmaster in 10 minutes sometime soon though.) Had to skip last week’s Bollywood class because of back pain, but should be able to go tonight. ![]()
Music – have been getting some good practice in.
Japanese – have been binging comfort reads!!
+2 for 2 rereads
= 12 tsundoku points ![]()
Also, participated in the readathon to the extent that I was able. @Midnightblue was SUCH a lovely host and their encouragement really made me feel great about my small contribution.
Sources were my two book club books and HananiArashi. ![]()
Kanji have been quite neglected. (It’s okay, though. They’re tough. They can fend for themselves.)
Welp.
More soon.

I’m glad that you could participate!
And I wouldn’t be as sure about your “small” contribution this time because thanks to said contribution your total tally on the Stat Explorer tool now shows over 24 hours.
I’d like to emphasise that you’ve now read for a whole day throughout several Readathons and that that is certainly not something to be dismissed – and that’s just a part of your reading ever since you began reading in Japanese, isn’t it? ![]()
By the way, I should probably mention that your log is one of the logs I wish to read through once I’m finally done catching up with other study logs first. If you get an avalanche of likes one day in …n-months at the slow pace my catch-up is going, please don’t be alarmed.

+2 for owned not quite 2 years (although it feels like this one had been on pause a lot longer!)
+1 for a reread
= 15 tsundoku points!
I haven’t been reading as many furigana novels lately – I think it’s just a combination of my book club load being heavier and “real life” having been a lot lately – but something else I have been doing is reading volumes from manga series that I had stalled out on. Namely, 気になってる人が男じゃなかった, とんがり帽子のアトリエ, よつばと!, and now ゆるキャン△!
It feels great to have made progress on all of those, and especially ゆるキャン, because seasons 1 & 2 of the anime are my absolute favorite chill thing to watch (don’t even know how many times I have watched them), but then season three was totally botched by the new anime studio that took over. And then when I started reading the manga it turned out the art is gorgeous and there’s little tidbits that never made it into the anime, and it keeps going for at least 18 volumes! But also, the kanji is very challenging, so it’s just SO SATISFYING when I can enjoy reading it!
Oh, also, possibly you noticed that I read two books since last update, but my total book count went up by 6? I was looking back through some of the manga series I’ve read and found four random books that I forgot to log (like, eg yotsuba 6 and flying witch 8). And adding those put my estimated pages read over 30,000! So that’s pretty cool. ![]()
Tracking Corner
Goal: 5 pages per day of すずめ
| day | start | end | time | pages | m/p | day total | vocab | notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/29 | 10:56 | 11:15 | 19 | 4 | 4.75 | 4 | めく(be like) 。。。たどたどしい。。。あばら (ribs) 。。。相当==かなりの程度であること。。。居住まいを正す==read いずまい (not to be confused with 居住 read きょじゅう) きちんとした座り方をする。。。うごめく==虫のように、もぞもぞと動く。。。包帯 (mostly proud of myself for figuring this word out on my own before I checked in the dictionary app)。。。 | Page 42-46. Wanted to start tracking this because I was having a hard time motivating myself to get started, but once I do start I generally enjoy it. This part of the scene where Suzume thinks she is feeding a normal stray cat and then suddenly it starts talking to her was pretty entertaining. |
| 9/29 | 7:39 | 7:46 | 7 | 1.5 | 4.6 | 5.5 | 総毛立つ。。。反動。。。 | The first page was to fulfill my daily goal, the next half page was involuntary. |
| 9/30 | 7:04 | 7:36 | 32 | 4.5 | 7.1 | 4.5 | 鼓膜。。。報われる むくわれる。。。野太い。。。たむろす。。。埠頭 ふとう。。。気色ばむ。。。見据える。。。 | Had a doctor’s appointment in the morning, so didn’t get to reading until after work. I felt like I rushed through it a little bit, but actually my pace was pretty slow. Finished last week’s reading. |
| 10/1 | 1:11 | 1:24 | 13 | 2 | 7.5 | 2 | いぶかしげ。。。まばら。。。理不尽。。。 | Slowest pace yet, but to be fair I was eating lunch and getting talked at and still recovering from the flu and covid shots I got yesterday. (I called in sick to work because my whole body hurts so much!) |
| 10/1 | 1:55 | 2:13 | 18 | 3 | 6 | 5 | 警備艇。。。なすすべもない。。。へそのお。。。かんはついれず。。。過保護。。。展望。。。振る舞う。。。 | Ok, that’s plenty. Goal achieved. |

Ooh, what manga!?
It’s going good! My goals were partly physical health (do physical activity besides dog walks on the regular) and partly mental health (do a type of dancing that is fun and encourages smiling!) And it feels perfectly suited to both. I probably won’t make it to class tonight though.

Aww! I’ll be so happy to have you! And I’ll have to check out yours …
I see that you’ve read a bunch of things this year that I’ve really enjoyed in the past or hope to really enjoy in the future. ![]()

It came up on a podcast I was listening to and sounded really good so I looked it up and found it on the harta website (I don’t know much about Harta but keep seeing you all reading it enthusiastically so I’ve guessed it must be good).
Mystery solved! I’ve only ever watched the anime which I initially loved but then lost interest in as the series progressed because the quality seemed to drop right off.
amazing heights!!!
yay it’s back. this was part of my inspiration for how I tracked my mini Frieren challenge ![]()
NOT FOR LONG!!!

Ooh, I’m excited for that one! I think I might have almost reached it too. ![]()

+3 for Harta, owned three years
= 18 tsundoku points
But also, I just ordered one more book to Neokyo on top of the ten that I had already ordered. Nine of those are sequels, though! And one is teeeechnically a book club book [1] … Although said book club is not even actually confirmed yet … Woops. But I have a good feeling about it.
ANYWAY. I’m already bracing myself for the holiday season. Working retail for the last 8 or so years, I’ve gotten in the habit of having very different expectations for the holiday season than for the non-holiday season (which perhaps un-ironically is more vacation-like, at least for us booksellers). All this to say, I ordered https://learnnatively.com/book/05535adfdc/ in order to have one additional chill reading option during the holidays. I mean, three Monodama novels is probably plenty … but better safe than sorry! ![]()
New Segment: Kanji Bingo!
The brilliant @mitrac invented this game, but of course I had to add some kind of complicating factor.
So I made a set in the Kanji Study App with all of my learned kanji in it, ordered it by school grade, and made the bingo sheets starting from the beginning. Here’s the twist: whenever I get a bingo I will remove all circled kanji from the bingo set in the app. Should I ever get to the end of my nearly 1800 kanji, then I will start again at the beginning, using only the remaining kanji, the ones that I haven’t previously spotted. And so on until I run out of kanji that haven’t been spotted!
… And also I’ve been adding newly learned kanji to the bingo set. I’m not sure if that’s a good idea, but I would be shocked if I ever actually finished this game so ![]()
I originally thought I would only use Harta to fill in the bingo boards, and maybe I’ll go back to that, but it was getting frustrating with the numbers kanji, so this first board includes some other random sources.
Oh, edit to add: I knew there was more than one complicating factor I added! I have to write the source word for each kanji below the board. ![]()
Currently Reading
Suzume had to go on pause because it was just not sparking joy for me, as they say. Meanwhile, starting Kanji Bingo plus nearing the end of (and then finishing) issue 97 heated my Harta-fever back up again. Also I peeked at @rodan’s review posts for issues 99-105 and found out that within 5-ish issues I will encounter a new series from the creator of ライカの星!!! !
And for chill reading I’m working on another neglected manga series … Flying Witch! This one is fun because I originally stalled out on it because of difficulty increase. Maybe I’ve had easier chapters recently but the last couple days I’ve read 30 pages in one sitting without even trying. (!)
I should update the book club threads [2] for this week before I go to work probably …
Oh yeah, and Conan Club starts tomorrow!
Meanwhile, I’ve just been procrastinating doing any actual study by updating my log.

joy!!! That children’s book with the Detective penguins looks hilarious

these mods are worthy of the Epic designation!!! I knew you could make it even more epic and even more unhinged!! I’ll make a home post and add your mods ![]()
Important new info!! I’m thinking I’ll start Harta reentry very soon, I’m so excited!
It warms my heart to hear you say that
(read you write that? How does that sound so ungrammatical!?)
Ooh, this is also important new info and I am also excited!! (I knocked out nearly half a bingo card with a single chapter this morning… Harta and Kanji Bingo, two great tastes that taste great together!)
