🔊 🎙 Listen Every Day Challenge - Summer 2024 🌻 🏖

Yeah, my listening skills are well below my reading skills (and I’m sure the ADHD + auditory processing issues really don’t help), which is why I’m doing this challenge. The first N1 listening question I missed, I think part of it was that I got stuck on a word in the explanation/question that I didn’t know, though even when I managed to push it aside, I still couldn’t latch on to a single thing the guy was saying.

I don’t do too too badly, I don’t think, at somewhat lower speeds—so most of the anime I have tends to be largely fine on that front and vocab is a bigger issue, though CSTN and Double Decker get pretty dang fast in places, and then dramas seem to be a bit faster than anime overall—but normal conversational speed is still way too quick much of the time. So probably I should watch more dramas. And then idk I guess keep picking up vocab through reading since it’s near impossible for me to through listening.

At least I don’t plan on ever going to Japan.

Really stopped posting here at the end didn’t I  I finished JJK and will watch the last Ghibli movie today. As expected I didn’t reach my Youtube goal. My main goal for this challenge was to get comfortable watching with Japanese subtitles, which I am, so I consider it a success overall. Lower level stuff like Pokemon Concierge (Natively N4) is really easy, I understand pretty much everything, except the occasional times where there’s fast speech or long sentences one after another. For N3 stuff like Sasaki and Miyano I inderstand about 70%. The level ~30 stuff I didn’t understand much, but they did teach me to stay in the moment. I used to get hung up on a certain word or sentence, and fall behind and then not be able to catch up. Now I can just let everything wash over me, and if I understand it, great, if I don’t, move on with the video.

I probably won’t post again until the fall thread is ready, so :call_me_hand:

I’m at 37 hours and 20 minutes out of my goal of 40. Sooooo I need an hour 20 of listening today and tomorrow to hit my goal. :triumph: I’ve been trying out anime as listening practice as well.

Managed to finally finish the 日本語の森 JLPT N3 文法問題 50問 video I’ve been working my way through.

My only aim with this challenge was to listen to something in Japanese every day (a podcast, anime, drama whatever). Some days I listened to lots, some days I only managed a podcast. Had to break my streak yesterday as I had a major family reunion but otherwise managed to listen to some Japanese every day.

Really enjoyed reading other people’s projects!

Today I watched a bit of Spy x Family to wrap up my summer listening challenge.

Aside from the day I went in for emergency dental work, I’ve listened to some Japanese every day of July and August. Going forward, I’ll continue to try to get in a bit of TV watching or podcast listening every day.

Good luck to those of you who will continue the challenge into September! It’s been fun to see the resources you report on; I will be coming back to this thread for future listening ideas.

Thanks for hosting @hotdogsuplex and everyone for posting your recs! Well done for keeping up with the challenge

I managed almost everyday until summer holidays and aside from being the most I’ve ever listened to Japanese, it really seems to have made spoken Japanese easier to parse for me. I’m quite pleased with that!

I watched the first 7 episodes of ひだまりが聴こえる; I Hear the Sunspot. It’s enjoyable and not stressful. I may leave the other 3 episodes until the series is completed.

:studio_microphone: :headphones: Listening Challenge of Q3 2024 Summary

From the plan,

I managed to listen everyday. On low days, I managed to slip in short YouTube or short news Spotify. Still slightly 無理矢理, though.

Listening exercises? I did try kotu.io, but then gave up perfecting 中高型. I knew it’s good exercise with good potential, but still…

I finished just one audiobook (狼と香辛料 Vol.5, from 30%) and continuing with another one (本好きの下剋上 Vol.4, now 80%). No book club or audiobook rush for this two months. There were still longer podcasts, like Rebuild, though I still listened to this one with less quality.

Anyway, I managed a lot of YouTube and anime, particularly for August Challenge.

I certainly still missed active part of listening, that is, production. Indeed, not just speaking or dialogue, but also stuff like commenting and review sharing. Not only thinking in Japanese, but also aloud! Anyway, just considering

:ferris_wheel: soggy’s challenge review :ferris_wheel:

Total Time: 37 hrs 50 mins

I ended up not pushing through to 40 hours. I figured I was close enough. Although, funnily enough, today when I got to work I found myself putting on a 30 minute episode of YUYU and listening to the whole thing, even though it’s now the off month! I guess I’ve created a pretty good habit, then.

I mainly used podcasts- 4898 American life and YUYUの日本語。I also listened to a few chapters of ふしぎ駄菓子屋 audiobook. Youtube and anime contributions are probably in the range of 5-10 hours.

Overall, my impression of the challenge was that 20hrs/month is more difficult to fit into my schedule than I first expected, although it’s definitely doable. The biggest gaps came from when I was not at work, because I don’t do much at home where I could add podcast listening; I have to choose to watch something like youtube/anime/dramas and I just don’t generally reach for more than like 15 minutes of those in a day.

Content:

I naturally gravitate towards podcasts and audiobooks for these challenges because they are the most dense. The youtube and anime that I used had a lot less speaking, so they didn’t feel quite as efficient. My overall goal is to be able to graduate to audiobooks, so I want to practice my skills with materials that are at least as dense as audiobooks.

I listened to a good amount of 4989 American life, and then by the end of the challenge, I found I was naturally not reaching for it, so I didn’t push it. I began listening to YUYUの日本語 which I quite enjoyed because of its relaxed style. I find it easy to put on when I’m doing other tasks and not feel too worried about missing little bits.

Comprehension:

I would rate my comprehension of conversational podcasts as decent :+1: The biggest change came from audiobook comprehension. I discovered that I am able to listen to new chapters of Zenitendou without having read them before, and with some focus and effort, I can follow the plot.

Now, these are children’s books, so the plot has a fairly low barrier to entry. I’m sure my comprehension is at best only 60-70% of what’s being said, but it was actually enough in most chapters. At first I was doubting what I heard, thinking like, I must be misunderstanding major information here, but by confirming with people who had already read the stories, I learned my understanding was correct!

Also, I believe both my extensive listening and my extensive reading over the course of the challenge have combined in order to improve my overall parsing of sentences. I’ve become pretty good at noticing which key word in a sentence is the right one to look up in order to understand what’s going on, which I think is a good improvement. I’ve noticed some nice synchronicity in my listening and reading in other ways as well- things like learning a word from reading and noticing it in listening material later and so on.

Stamina

I believe around the end of the first month of the challenge, I posted about how I still hadn’t noticed a major change in my listening stamina. I was still noticing the Headache of Knowledge approaching whenever I tried to listen to around an hour of material. Funnily enough, I think that’s improved. It’s something you notice when it’s there, but don’t notice when it’s gone. Earlier today I listened to 30 minutes of Yuyu and I don’t feel any more tired after that. If that’s the only thing I gain from the challenge, I’ll count it as a win, because I’ve had a much harder time improving my listening stamina than my reading stamina.

I’m going to stop posting daily updates here during the off month, but I’ll still be lurking! And I’ll keep listening to stuff, just probably not quite as much. I really enjoy the camaraderie in these threads and seeing what everyone is up to.

I’ve been playing a game that isn’t voiced and doesn’t have a JP language option besides (Summer in Mara), and then yesterday I actually passed out before I could find something to listen to… Yeah, my only “listening” these past couple days has mostly just been having Kobayashi Chiaki’s cover of チェリー on repeat.

Watched:
・黄昏アウトフォーカス    第7〜9話(英語字幕)
・ぶっちぎり?!    第1〜6話(英語字幕)

まほあく is officially not cute.

I’m not entirely sure why I’m watching ぶっちぎり tbh, I don’t even like the MC. Turns out Arajin’s only cute looks-wise. Matakara-kun, on the other hand… (Also I feel like he’s got at least a couple problems that would be solved if he just realized there is someone who likes him and it’s not Mahoro but Matakara, but unfortunately he’s stupid and this isn’t gay.) I probably am gonna be watching to the end, though.

nice write-up soggy! Lots of little gems in there I’ll use for the next challenge I do. Also, it made me feel better about generally not managing more than 10-15 minutes/day, since like your non-work days, I generally don’t have a natural place in my life for podcasts/listening.

I agree the camaraderie here is great fun, thanks everyone! I’ll continue as a lurker as well
