Wow, I can’t believe I was finally able to hit level 60. What a long process full of many hours and many of the most annoying leeches of ALL TIME haha. I’ve spent 600 days almost straight using this, which is crazy now that I’m typing it out. I’m so glad that the journey is winding down, and the journey into reading more difficult content can start to pick up even more. That being said, I have always largely lacked motivation to read, as manga hasn’t really ever piqued my interest all too much. What are some recommendations you all have?

what do you like to read in English (or your native language)? if you need a place to start, maybe try reading translations of those things into Japanese.

i’ve been (slowly) reading ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ, which is a light novel series (think, approximately “YA” in the US). it’s the basis for a manga and an anime, which is how i got into it, but it’s definitely not a manga, although the themes are _very_ high school drama haha.

alternatively you could go for some of the internationally renowned classics of Japanese literature? Murakami, or (modern adaptations of) things like The Tale of Genji or The Pillow Book?

as a final suggestion, if you’ll be in Japan or near a Kinokuniya, just browse a physical bookstore 😉

Congratulations on reaching Level 60! Hope you got yourself a cake!

As for reading suggestions - Natively is a great site to find books. Reading difficulties are graded and you can read other people’s reviews. There’s also the WK bookclubs - reading along with others can definitely help keep you motivated.

Congrats on level 60! If you haven’t read anything yet then manga is not a bad place to start. You may have level 60 kanji knowledge, but if you’ve not read anything but textbooks you may be surprised how difficult reading native content is. Manga gives you exposure to lots of casual speech, but with some pictures for context, and the ability to get through a single volume with a satisfying efficiency.

Beginner book club here has read a variety of (relatively) simple books and manga that can be a good place to start. I enjoyed [コーヒーが冷めないうちに (Intermediate Book Club)](https://community.wanikani.com/t/%E3%82%B3%E3%83%BC%E3%83%92%E3%83%BC%E3%81%8C%E5%86%B7%E3%82%81%E3%81%AA%E3%81%84%E3%81%86%E3%81%A1%E3%81%AB-intermediate-book-club/51430) as the first adult novel I read (intermediate book club). [コンビニ人間 🍱 Repeat Book Club](https://community.wanikani.com/t/%E3%82%B3%E3%83%B3%E3%83%93%E3%83%8B%E4%BA%BA%E9%96%93-repeat-book-club/47353) (also intermediate book club) is another popular first novel - there have been two book clubs reading that on here.

I love my subscription to Satori Reader. All the inline definitions are context specific which is worth its weight in gold! Plus then you can play the chapter audio (with real Japanese voice recordings) and practice your listening skills of what you just read, reinforcing each other. It’s seriously good stuff.

I can’t believe I’ve never heard of Natively before. I just looked it up and it’s perfect. Even has tags to sort for free reads. Thank you so much! It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.

I also have a problem to keep my motivation to read. Recently I picked up a light novel that just has one volume and it worked wonders on my motivation. Knowing that after I finished this book the story has an end kind of keeps me motivated way more than books that have multiple volumes. I am basically seeing the light at the end of the tunnel from the very beginning 😅

Congrats! As others have said, take a look at the Book Clubs for ideas or Natively. If you haven’t done much immersion, I’d recommend starting with something on the easier / shorter side too.

Personal recommendation: キノの旅 😄
