Level 21 before 2021!

Just hit level 3 after 10 days! Hopefully I can get to 4 quicker (and get a subscription set up!)

Figure I might as well post an update. I hit level eight a few days ago and its been treating me nicely. The feeling of getting enlightened is amazing!

I’ve been putting off starting anything else, so I figure I’ll start reading the Genki I textbook today.
I haven’t been posting much, but its always nice to come back to this thread and see how everyone’s doing.

That’s my next level… :fearful:

Yay for level up and Enlightened items! Starting Genki sounds like a good plan!

Good luck! Please tell us how it is!

Hi everyone, just added myself to the leaderboard! I’ve put my speed as 10 days for now which gives me a comfortable forecast. But I’m still figuring out what’s realistic for me, so I might change that after a couple more levels.

I’m going to join the Skytree thread too - it’s exciting setting an achievable timeline instead of just thinking “I’ll get there when I get there”, somehow it makes it less intimidating to me :relaxed: I think I’ll focus on this one for now though, since 60 is such a long way off for me. I do have a tendency to get very into hobbies for a short time and then completely burn out and move onto the next thing. I hope aiming for this goal as part of a group will help keep me committed :crossed_fingers:

I kinda agree and disagree. The kanji do have individual meaning, but they may not have easily translatable meaning, so we have to infer the meaning through the vocabulary.

The point of my original post is to use the work done by others to save the brain juice from running out.
( I am a programmer, so I know a thing or two about using other’s work XD ). This may not work for everyone, just like WaniKani itself won’t work for everyone, so it is more of a suggestion rather than a “here is the best way, do it”

If we really want to get the meaning behind the japanese kanji, you can always look up the actual meanings in a japanese kanji dictionary and use machine translation to get a broader understanding of the kanji. I found https://kotobank.jp/ to work fairly well, but YMMV

Well done for levelling up!
And for sharing that this level will be something to look forward too

What book is this?
Looks pretty good!

A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar. It’s really good. It’s exactly what the title says, an alphabetical list of grammar items. You can’t really use it as your only book (no structured lessons). I use it to look up things I come across. It explains things extremely well, but it also gives you a glimpse of nuances and details and more difficult stuff so in that way it’s a bit scary because it makes you realize how much you still have to learn. And there’s an Intermediate and Advanced book too…

Thanks! I’ll have a look, as it seems not too expensive (10 euro’s?)
Might stick with beginner’s, as I don’t like to be scared off right away hahaha

SOS, after an awesome run of 6 levels in 7-ish weeks I’ve suddenly fallen off the ball completely. Little interest in doing lessons (even when I unlock new kanji!) and my reviews are quickly climbing through the 200s.

Anyone experiencing something similar?

PS I really like the idea of a level 40 goal! I think we should wait to make it though, there’s something so excited about joining a new group once you’ve just completed your goal. Just like the feeling we all got when this post started, and how everyone’s motivation was so high in the beginning!

I think it’d be awesome to start a level 40 thread on 01/01/21 once we’ve all formally achieved our goal for 2020 :muscle:t4:

Jupp. Around the same level too. I went too fast through level 10 and stumbled through level 11. Now on level 12 I have slowed down and that really helps. Take a break from doing lessons and do only reviews for a week. That will help. Many of us struggle around level 12.

The first one says ‘Basic’ but it’s probably gonna last you a while :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Here’s a review by Tofugu
Would personally recommend 100%
