[Level 0] Introducing Small Characters and SRS

We’re still discussing it! We’ll let you know when we reach a conclusion :grinning::+1:

I don’t think title “says it all”… What’s the purpose of lvl 0 that you’re discussing?

In my opinion it would makes sense to start from lvl 0 and get to 1 once you Guru 90% of the kanj. So in order to reach the lvl X you need to Guru its kanji. This way reaching lvl 60 would mean - you actually Guru’d all kanji on WK.

Right now reaching lvl 60 is treated as the ultimate achievement but you still have a whole lvl of kanji and vocab to learn!

Ah, also a slightly related suggestion: some people are reaching lvl and start over. Why not show this visually on their lvl badge? Could be as simple as keeping it gold color. Or you could add extra marks on the badge in case you want to distinguish people who reached 60 multiple times. This is similar to New Game plus. Maybe you could even give an option for shortened srs intervals on NG+

@d-hermit I edited the first post, thanks for pointing it out!

Level 0 should be a test.

For example, being able to read じょ and じよ as above stated.
Understanding what SRS means by having the same lesson appear 1 minute after completion so the user enters the same answer on two different review sessions.
Pretty much the FAQ in test form.

The lessons you unlock are stages to using Wanikani successfully.

Thanks for adding details.

Yeah, don’t worry, I’ve used the forum enough to know the difference.

I was writing to Rachel intentionally. There was a suggestion about NG+ and my interpretation of levels.

Cool ideas! I like the idea of a badge that reflects the highest level you’ve gotten to, or indicates how many times you’ve reached a certain level. Would definitely be nice for those who restart! Will discuss this too.

You could retain a gold line on the outside for those who got to 60. For multiple times I’m not sure.

Clearly not enough for this maniac

another thing that should be taught in level 0 is how ん works in terms of having to type it twice
like make people type おな、おんあ、おんな

I think if level 0 is implemented, it should be optional. New users are angry about how “slow” wanikani is as it stands, if they are forced to go through a separate level just to learn how to type stuff like きゅう and ん (if they already know how), then this will just increase their frustration at the speed.

I recommend something like a tooltip that could pop up whenever someone gets a review wrong, saying something like “are you sure you typed きゅう/ん correctly?” and guiding them with a link to a page describing how to type those characters, or maybe just showing them on the popup. With one of those “never show this hint again” buttons that so can get rid of it once they got it down.

@JenK What do you think? I think that might be a better solution — when they encounter these for the first time, show them a hint…

But, maybe still give them a super-quick explanation after the very first set of lessons about how reviews work.

Thanks for tagging me! We’ve gone over a few different ideas for teaching small characters to new users on the lessons but we’re working on some other projects first before tackling this one.

@JenK This might actually solve the problem without needing anything crazy. Just a minor content update would do it.

Well, if you can’t read this at least in 平仮名 before joining, you might be in trouble!
