Sorry to say that Level 15 and 16 were particularly fast levels only taking me 11 and 10 days respectively. But itās way too fast for meā¦ I donāt like this feeling! Like Iām on a rollercoaster or like Iām snowballing and I canāt regulate myselfā¦ My accuracy has gone down a few decimal points too.
I really should be more strict with only doing vocab first. Iāve been using the userscripts on the web app and advanced settings on the flaming durtles app to do that, but sometimes I still go on WK on my work laptop which has no scripts. Maybe i need to make a new yearās resolution to stop going on WK at workā¦
Finally cleared my reviews and started lessons again after the holidays derailed me. (As they usually do. ) I didnāt have much to catch up on but I took my time, as I always do.
Maybe Iāll even be able to level up by next month?? At this rate, maybe Iāll make level 60 likeā¦In 2 or 3 years?
Have you tried the built-in WK setting I mentioned earlier, the āSettings > App > Lesson ordering > Ascending level then shuffledā setting? If not, then it might help you precisely in this kind of circumstance, where installing scripts is not possible or easy.
If you have tried it, but are still experiencing this issue, let me know, because Iād love to hear feedback from anyone whoās tried it but it hasnāt helped them ā Iād love to know what its limitations are for different folks.
That may very well be something to consider. Iām attempting to keep my WK/Japanese-study time limited to a certain part of the day, and for a limited time too. E.g. Only after 5pm, and limited to a single session, max one hour. I had been previously doing it in the mornings, but that tended to interfere with other more-important things I needed to take care of in the mornings. And before even that restriction, I used to do it on-and-off throughout the day, but that led to me doing it way too much overall, so thatās when I started to put harder limits on when (or, in your case, perhaps where) I use WK.
Late update again, but slightly less late, haha. I spent my usual fourteen days on the past level. I also made a big retrospective post for 2022, plus some goals for 2023! Looking back over the past year, I actually accomplished quite a lot, despite some pretty adverse circumstances. So Iām proud of myself for that!
Iām also SO CLOSE to finishing Minna no Nihongo! I have just two more lessons to go, and I will have completed the beginnerās seriesā¦
Read through your retrospective post and I wanted to give you a big congratulations on all your achievements!!! I hope that 2023 will be better for you in real life but Iām happy to hear that you found solace in the online communities youāve joined not just in WK. Iām feeling the same way about the WK community these days! Good luck with MnH! Just about to finish the red book!
I havenāt messed with the built-in settings actually cause I use the WK lesson filtering userscript! But will try it out!
I have been doing it on and off throughout the day as well. What I would want to do is do lessons and reviews at 8am before work, reviews at 12:30pm over lunch and reviews at 9pm. No more than 30 minutes per session. So i can get the first three SRS levels done for new lessons in a day. And then if itās a busy day, give up either the 8am or 12:30pm study time.
Made it to level 14! Only (fittingly) 14 days on this one, though I definitely slacked off on vocab lessons at the end. Iāve got a big pile now, so I expect next level will take a bit longer.
Reviews are piled up a bit, too. Apparently being sick for two weeks + heavy work deadlines means not having energy to offer the Crabigator in the evening. But! Iām getting better, and the deadlines are almost over. Hopefully this time next week, Iāll have more breathing space.
Hello Durtles, I am pleased to report I have leveled up for the first time since I discovered this lovely thread! Leveled up to level 10! I did a great job durtling on level 9, with a new record of 56 days. I did some traveling throughout December + had a major life change recently, which caused me to durtle a bit extra this past level. I would say that Iām excited to get started on the level 10 radicals + kanji, but I still have 60 of the level 9 vocab lessons to get through Which makes me wonder how anyone ever reaches 0/0? I feel like whenever I finally catch up on my lessons, doing my reviews causes me to unlock more lessonsā¦ and so on. Ah well I suppose that doesnāt really matter much as long as Iām making progress. äøē·ć«é å¼µćć¾ćććļ¼
Thatās something weāve been discussing a few times in the past couple of months. You may want to skim back on the thread a bit and check it out. For example, hereās a link to one post where I respond to a similar question:
I do five lessons a day and manage to hit 0/0 every level. I do this by reordering my lessons to always learn vocab first, even the current levelās vocab before the radicals and kanji.
Wow thanks, I checked out the post you linked and I didnāt even know that changing the settings to āascending order then shuffledā is a thing that exists! I might try it out because I hate finishing all the kanji and then sometimes getting stuck with 100+ lessons of just vocab. I also think youāre right about not following the 0/0 challenge, because I kinda feel like, if it happens it happens, if it doesnāt it doesnāt, and it doesnāt really make a difference either way (as long as Iām not letting my reviews pile up to a huge number of course, which I donāt anyway).
Sorry Iām a bit confused, how do you learn the current levelās vocab before the radicals and kanji? Donāt you need to know the kanji to learn the vocab?
The in house WK settings worked for me! Now on the way to plowing through 100+ lessons (vocab first!!) after leveling up to level 18 in 13 days just yesterday.
Still doing WK at different times during the day thoughā¦ I think iām addicted
Ooh I see, thank you for the explanation! I feel like I would like this method as well because itās kind of like breaking up the level into smaller batches of kanji to learn along w associated vocab
Last time I reached 0/0 was when I was new to WaniKani. I had high motivation and wanted to go through the content as fast as possible, especially since I hadnāt purchased a lifetime subscription. But, at some point, the amount of reviews got overwhelming and it took away time from other activities in my life. Then I learned about durtling and decided it would be the more sustainable approach for the long term. Nowadays the amount of lessons I have hover around 30-80 depending on how far I am at my current level. I do try to keep my number of reviews close to 0, though. I find it more manageable if I donāt let them pile up too much.
And seeing that youāre new, I would recommend experimenting with lesson ordering. I donāt really like the default do all radicals ā do all kanji ā do all vocab ordering because of the differing intensity (I find learning kanji takes way more effort than learning vocab and radicals). So I switched to doing 1-2 kanji + 3-6 vocabs per day using the Lesson Filter userscript and I like the consistency better. Other people might prefer something else though, which is fine.
Seconding this!! If you aim for roughly a 1 to 3 ratio of kanji to vocab, you should be golden. I spent most of my WK career doing 3 kanji and 9 vocab a day, for a total of 12 lessons (now Iāve cut back to 10 lessons haha due to accumulated leeches and a decrease in overall lesson numbers per level in the later levels). Itās a really nice, steady, consistent daily workflow. Easy to form a good regular habit, and not too intrusive in your daily life.
When I got back into WaniKani, I remember reading a post earlier in this thread about the lesson filter method and honestly I find the experience SO much better. I feel less burnt out each time I do lessons now. Gonna keep using lesson filters from now on to mix up the lesson batches.
Been keeping a steady pace so far, which Iām happy about. Iām definitely liking using lesson filters to mix up my lesson batches. Hoping to keep it up for this level if not a bit slower.
